A Peony and Roses 24

Mona Pendleton | Saturday, March 26, 2016 @ 9:31 AM | , , , ,

Hi there! Thanks to those for keeping my sister in your thoughts and prayers. Haven't received an update from my BIL in a couple of days regarding my sister but as the saying goes, no news is good news. Surely she is resting and gaining her strength. I'll keep you posted. Today I have a 11" x 14" painting to share that I painted using Heritage Acrylic Paints.
I painted this as I followed along with David Jansen's Paint It Simply's Peony and Roses Quick Compositions video tutorial. It's my first time painting with these paints and for me personally, there is definitely a learning curve. I don't want to throw in the towel just yet. This painting was painted using only 6 colors of paint on my palette. The variation in shades and values came from mixing the 6 basic colors.
I definitely have A LOT of room to grow but I'm having fun with the creative learning process and everyone has to start somewhere. All of my favorite artists including David Jansen remind me of the same thing, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE...

playing with abstract geraniums 14

Mona Pendleton | Wednesday, February 17, 2016 @ 4:44 PM | , , , ,

Hi there! I had the day off from work so I had fun playing with some oil paints! It's week 4 of a 6 week online painting workshop that I'm currently taking with one of my favorite artists Dreama Tolle Perry. This week we are painting a chair with a pot of geraniums perched in / on it.
Here's my first attempt on a 9" x 11" canvas board. I got a wee bit carried away with all the shades of reds and pinks! LOL
One of the many things I'm learning in the course, is how to be "loose" with the brush, not painting in uniformity and embracing abstract paint brush strokes. I'm going to paint this again and again until I'm satisfied with the final outcome where I can proudly hang it in my studio :)

A sweet treat... 29

Mona Pendleton | Friday, February 5, 2016 @ 10:51 PM | , , , , , ,

Hi! I had to take some time to catch up on some DT responsibilities so I had to put my paints and paintbrush aside until tonight! I'm currently taking an online oil painting workshop with one of my favorite artists Dreama Tolle Perry and this week's assignment was to paint cupcake :)
I'm learning so much about color values, contrast, transparent and opaque colors, etc...

I also took the time to create a Valentine's Day card using a fun banner die that I bought nearly a year ago and never used:

I'm linking my painting in the current Paint Party Friday linkup:

Shades of Pink Peonies 28

Mona Pendleton | Sunday, January 24, 2016 @ 8:51 PM | , , , ,

Hi! I hope everyone had an amazing weekend! The weather was beautiful here so I hiked my favorite trail: Telegraph Pass on South Mountain taking in all the natural desert beauty. I have an art journal page to share that I finished this morning that was inspired by strokes and techniques I learned from Nancy Medina's video "Pinkalicious Peonies". I put together this vase and flower arrangement for my own personal inspiration in my studio:
Here's my interpretation:
Close up, you can see all the layers and strokes it takes to create dimension:
I'm really enjoying all I'm learning in my art journey from a variety of artists whose talent I appreciate and admire. I took the plunge and committed to a floral painting workshop that will be held at an art school in the upcoming months!

A vase full of fresh cut blossoms 29

Mona Pendleton | Thursday, January 21, 2016 @ 7:05 PM | , , , , ,

Hi! The weather is gorgeous here in Phoenix and I have a bad case of spring fever :) With the sun shining bright, pretty blue skies and warm 70 degree temperatures, it's hard not to when you love the great outdoors like I do. I took advantage of the beautiful day and went for a 6.5 mile run. Today I have a painting to share featuring my first canvas of fresh cut painted blossoms:
 Here's my source of inspiration:
Here's my interpretation:
I attended an art class at Krista Eaton's (a local talented artist's whom work I admire) home studio. After Krista gave us a painting demonstration, she set us free to paint our canvas. I applied various techniques that I learned from Nancy Medina's amazing painting videos that Scott gave me to me for a Christmas gift. Once we had some color on our canvas's Krista offered her expertise. I didn't get very far along in class, as I am a newbie and paint VERY slow but I was thrilled to receive Krista's input and learn some tips and tricks of the business. I finished the painting this morning which means the oil is still wet and will be for a few days!

I'm entering this in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge: Day 21:

Today I have an art journal page to share featuring a variety of sunflowers.
I combined painting techniques learned from both Nancy Medina and Krista Eaton using oils:
