so much beauty seen this weekend, and my words will have to do pics are not loading.
left Pa 9:30 am, brain complaining I did nothing to prepare yesterday so today is disjointed, and in several different places. I used to be so much more organized, as I type the word Organized I remember that I am supposed to be taking an organizing class....EPIC FAIL !
Forward with out guilt and anger means when I feel it I must recognize it IMMEDIATELY in order to cope properly. sometimes I feel so behind, specially when I destroy something or am told something by my son, who loves me dearly, and i am hurt. stupid me. but this is the wrong wander I want to rember this weekends high points, avoid the lows, and remember what I learned....
the rain forest is beautiful even in January. it is very dry this year, after 3 years of growing glacier I am a bit worried as to the dryness but am reminded by S that dry years happen that trees sometimes need the dry year. the weather we had this weekend was beautiful chilly down to the high 30's and highs to mid 50s. good weather for me but not much walking was done to much ground to cover. first night we didn't make it any farther than the clearwater high country, oh but what roads and trees !! first off the road at Nolan and twisted sister woods all of you who know me know this is one of my favorite places on earth.
I have spent so many hours in these woods they hold so many happy memories, a place I love to share, so come on out ! these woods are so quiet and regal, we went off trail and entered another time period these woods are prehistoric. but I am getting ahead of our days I must start where we did 'tis easier for my brain...
Lake Crescent was glass the Eagles were present and Hungry
no they didn't get the ducks !!

so beautiful, then they sat in the tree and squabbled about eating ....
the 2nd half of the lake holds Storm King Mt. ranger station. the walk to Merrimere falls is there along with the moments in time trail that many of you have been on. but we drive on through today, we have miles to go before we set up camp. a stop in Forks, Washington., fuel and foods,( Tell Danny at the bakery at thrifty Larena says Hi!) and we are off again, just south of Forks behind 2 sweet old trucks fans will recognize from Twilight hype...is a great visitor center. lots to learn about big trees in this area from here.
first turn off 101 today is for the Duncan Cedar Tree at Nolan creek about 20 miles south of Forks the Twisted sister woods where we started this post...... my how I love these woods and bringing an old friend back is sweet. welcome back SK. these woods were where I used to bring my dogs to play on my days off.... these woods are where I have made girlfriends look at trees, friends walk the logs and just sat for hours on end listening and watching. I learned to use black and white film in these woods....

love this forest saved in the 70's thanks to a spotted owl nest.
onto Big Brother, better known as The Duncan Cedar, after the brothers that logged the area. They knew when they walked these woods in the early 70's that this was something to save.
they were right but can you imagine if they had left the whole forest ?
he is so beautiful, but this time his age is showing, I fear we are beginning to see the decline from his boardwalk installation which cut 2 of his remaining living roots to install. thus proving no good deed goes unpunished......
this is a view I have never seen before, with the undergrowth changing and thinning as he and the surrounding forest age, we went off trail and found a huge cut from one of his former neighbors .....
there is no scale for you to tell by but that you are seeing less than half of the whole piece and that my 6'3" friend was not up to the center hole should give you some idea of what this neighbor hood was like. again can you but imagine the forest full of these giants ?
man made mess, we are on private lands and not supposed to be... still a bit of the rebel in me.
in the middle of frame you see a yellow machine.... at this machine we were flagged to stop by a local logger, we being in his territory, I said stop, he was friendly , we told him we are just enjoying the day in the mountains, he began giving us directions to get back down to the big tree, quite good ones actually, but I said we were looking for a particular road , we have a Garmin! his head dropped to his chest and he shook his head to and fro and clear as day I heard him say "oh dear God they have electronics" he looked back at us and said I really think you should go down to the big tree sign and turn right back to 101... but I said I am sure I have made it through here to Clearwater and KalaLoch, "Ah he says, have a good afternoon" and waves as he drives off, how odd that was I said to SK, well he reminds me, the logger saw the NY plates and prolly thought we were really lost, and then to look at the load we are carrying in this old Subaru...LOL until I could pronounce the local names he was worried. we have laughed about it ever since. I am grateful that he would take the time to help a tourist. hope he cleans up after this cut as well.
