BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 6th March 2020
The Clash had strong connections with Camden, and their rehearsal room and HQ was in the old stables area of the market. The photo on the cover of their debut album was taken there. We’ve built a walk-in album cover on the exact spot where Kate Simon took the iconic photo of Joe, Paul and Mick in 1977 so that you can take your own version of the photo yourself.
And to provide the perfect soundtrack, there's another chance to hear a special programme Don Letts, a longtime friend and collaborator of the Clash, who directed their videos and won a Grammy for the film Westway to the World, made in December 2019 featuring his selection of alternate versions and covers of the band's songs.

Don also brings the story up to the modern day with the thoughts of American football star Colin Kaepernick, who, since 2016, has led the ‘take a knee’ protests during the national anthem at American football games, in response to police brutality, continuing deprivation and discrimination.

DON LETTS MEETS TROJAN RECORDS UPTOWN - MARKING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF TROJAN RECORDS (320kbs-m4a/129mb/56mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 26th August 2018
Don Letts presents a personal appreciation of Trojan Records, the pioneering UK-based reggae label, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
Trojan Records was launched in the summer of 1968, just a couple of months after Enoch Powell’s notorious ‘rivers of blood’ speech. Through its releases of ground-breaking Jamaican recordings in the UK, the label connected the Windrush generation and their families with developing sounds from back home (ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, danehall etc.). Trojan also helped introduce this influential music to a wider audience in the UK and beyond, and, for decades, has united black and white youth on dancefloors and in the street.
