The Clash - This Is Radio Clash: Episode 2 - Part 1

THE CLASH - THIS IS RADIO CLASH: EPISODE 2 - PART 1 (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 10th May 2022

On Boxing Day 2013, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Topper Headon from the Clash treated 6Music listeners to two hours of their favourite tunes and some rock n' roll tales in their first ever radio show: This is Radio Clash.

A mysterious character called Bernie also makes some special disguised appearances. Formed in 1976 in the vanguard of British punk, the Clash would soon become one of the most iconic rock bands of their era, a symbol of intelligent protest and stylish rebellion in the turbulent years of the late Seventies and early Eighties. Just as importantly, they were to become unflinching musical pioneers, integrating first militant reggae, then dub, funk, jazz and hip-hop into their music, which has helped to make them one of the most respected and sampled bands by modern DJs and dance musicians. Cracking the Top 10 in America in 1982 - before splitting three years later - they were to leave behind an extraordinary recorded legacy.

FIrst broadcast in 2013 and repeated as part of a 6 Music Artist Collection.

Steve Lamacq Album Club - The Clash's London Calling

STEVE LAMACQ ALBUM CLUB - THE CLASH'S LONDON CALLING (320kbs-m4a/178mb/1hr18mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 26th January 2022

Join the album club and listen along as Steve Lamacq plays the whole of The Clash's ground breaking 3rd album London Calling.

"If music-loving aliens land and you find yourself, at laser-point, searching for one single example of how rock is supposed to be rolled, then you are strongly advised to recommend London Calling. Because this epic double album, from its iconic sleeve to its wildly eclectic mash-up of styles, is surely the quintessential rock album.

So good in fact that Rolling Stone magazine voted it the best album of the 1980s, even though it actually came out in 1979. This was when The Clash came of age, progressing from the brilliant-but-limited punk rock ire of their first two albums to the stage where they could turn their hand to reggae, ska, rockabilly and pretty much anything else they fancied.

Yet the record never lacks focus and Strummer and Jones' willingness to experiment is never let down by a lack of great songs. Pick from straight-up punk like "Death Or Glory", sweet pop like "Lost In The Supermarket" or dub like the Paul Simenon-penned "Guns of Brixton". They're even confident enough to leave possibly the best song of all, "Train In Vain", un-credited on the sleeve when any other band would be screaming its presence from the rooftops.

Truly, a record so brilliant you'd have to be from another planet not to love it."

The Clash had strong connections with Camden, and their rehearsal room and HQ was in the old stables area of the market. The photo on the cover of their debut album was taken there. We’ve built a walk-in album cover on the exact spot where Kate Simon took the iconic photo of Joe, Paul and Mick in 1977 so that you can take your own version of the photo yourself.

And to provide the perfect soundtrack, there's another chance to hear a special programme Don Letts, a longtime friend and collaborator of the Clash, who directed their videos and won a Grammy for the film Westway to the World, made in December 2019 featuring his selection of alternate versions and covers of the band's songs.
