Journeys In Sound - Paul Weller

JOURNEYS IN SOUND - PAUL WELLER: THE MUSICAL UPS AND DOWNS OF MY LIFE (320lbs-m4a/137mb/60mins)

BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 15th May 2024

Paul Weller shares the pivotal moments that have made him the multi-talented musician and composer he is today. Talking to Nemone who combines her roles of DJ and practising psychotherapist, Paul reveals how his relationship with music has grown over the six decades he's been releasing and the experiences that have had an impact on his work.

The prolific award-winning singer songwriter, affectionately known as 'The Modfather' by his fans, burst onto the music scene back in the late 70s fronting The Jam. A string of hits followed such as 'Eton Rifles', 'A Town Called Malice', 'Going Underground', 'That's Entertainment' and 'The Bitterest Pill'. This led to further musical adventures with The Style Council in the 80s and solo material under his own name from 1992 onwards. Nemone and Paul chat in his studio ahead of the release of new album '66'. They talk about life growing up with the Wellers in Woking, teenage musical influences, the impact of The Jam's success and band's subsequent split, working with his musical partner-in-crime Ocean Colour Scene's Steve Craddock, the joy of playing live, the process of writing songs and the making of the new album which will be released the day before his 66th birthday on the 24th of May. Paul also talks about how life has changed since giving up alcohol and how he tries to look after himself.

During this intimate conversation Paul picks music that has sound-tracked his life from The Beatles, Little Richard, The Four Tops, The Who, Sex Pistols, The Clash and Frankie Knuckles, and shares his love of artists such as Liam Bailey and Vegyn. He also chooses his ultimate 'Self Care' track, one that helps him relax and re-set.

Paul Weller At 60 With Martin Freeman

PAUL WELLER AT 60 WITH MARTIN FREEMAN (320kbs-m4a/259mb/1hr53mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 12th October 2018

Actor Martin Freeman takes us on a personal journey through the many musical faces of Paul Weller who turned 60 this year.

Often referred to as The Modfather, this reductive tag has tended to pigeonhole Weller's music within the public's psyche. Martin is on a two hour mission to convince you otherwise. For him, there's always been a clear push and desire to explore sonic possibilities whilst avoiding treading water within Weller's music. When boundaries present themselves and the straps of the genre straightjacket start to tighten, Weller isn't afraid of downing tools in order to seek a completely new approach to his musical output.

First breaking through in the late 70s with his group The Jam, Paul stunned fans and followers alike when he broke the band up at the height of their game in 1982. To compound things further, he then formed The Style Council with keyboardist Mick Talbot. In a way, this is the band that allows you to understand the true complexities of Weller's musical journey as it distorts the straight line from his former punk glories in The Jam to his renaissance as the Modfather.

Martin Freeman is an English actor known for roles such as Tim Canterbury in The Office, Dr. John Watson in Sherlock, Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit film trilogy and Lester Nygaard in the drama TV series Fargo.

His film work includes Love Actually, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Nativity!, The World's End, Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther.

Programme 3, A-side. "The Gift" - 30 years after the band's split, Paul Weller talks about 'The Gift' - the last album for The Jam. The band's only No 1 album, it marked a musical departure from the classic Jam sound to a more soul-influenced style, and it ushered in Weller's ideas for the Style Council. It was an album that didn't just focus on the state of society, it also had a lot to say about where music was going in the 1980s - and it included the classic No 1 'Town Called Malice' as well as 'Running On The Spot' and 'Carnation'. Paul also plays exclusive live versions of some of the tracks on the album.

In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions and that programme can be heard next Monday at 11.00pm.

Producers: Paul Kobrak & India Rakusen.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: PAUL WELLER (128kbs-m4a/40mb/43mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 21st December 2007

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the musician Paul Weller. As the lead singer of The Jam, the founder of The Style Council and a hugely successful solo artist, he is one of the most revered music writers and performers of the past 30 years and is cited as an influence by countless other singers.

In a rare interview, he describes the chronic shyness he had to overcome; how he is still gripped by fear before each performance and how, after he had been dumped by his record label, he was unable to write songs and found that even picking up a guitar felt alien to him. His father has been a constant support to him - as his mentor as well as his manager - and has always believed that his son had something special.
