THE RELEASE OF TELSTAR (320kbs-m4a/61mb/27mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 15th March 2019
Stuart Maconie looks back at another momentous event in pop music, the release of Joe Meek's Telstar. An incredibly futuristic-sounding pop single, it marked the launch of the Russian satellite (which, in itself, had rocked the western world). It pre-empted Kraftwerk, the Human League, Pet Shop Boys et al by decades and pointed a new way forward for pop.
First broadcast on Radio 2 in 2004.
The Tornados - Telstar [Castle Pulse]
Humphrey Lyttelton - Bad Penny Blues [EMI]
Buddy Holly - Not Fade Away [Connoisseur Collection]
Michael Cox - Angela Jones
The Blue Men - I Hear A New World
John Leyton - Johnny Remember Me
Mike Berry - Tribute To Buddy Holly
The Tornados - Telstar [Old Gold]
Jenny Moss - Hobbies [Sanctuary]
