A Return to the Crusades

Over the last couple of weeks the Shed has taken on a distinctive Middle Eastern flavour, providing an opportunity to set up my desert boards and wheel out the Crusader and Saracen armies I painted the best part of two years ago.

The photos in this post come from some of the recent games

I think all Wargamers go through phases in their developments of new genres and I am no exception. I originally set out to create the two Crusading factions with a view of playing a multitude of games including Lion rampant, Crescent and Cross and Hail Caesar. In fact these forces have only ever visited the table about three times in their life and in every case we have used the Lion Rampant ruleset. I have decided that whilst I am painting up my Napoleonic’s we will give these boys a bit more airtime.

So two weeks ago Mark and I convened to play for the first time Crescent & Cross – these are the Crusading rules based on the successful Saga series brought to the wargames fraternity by Studio Tomahawk. Indeed I think I bought this ruleset over two years ago and having had a cursory glance through the beautiful rulebook we’d never actually played.

The rules are effectively the same as Saga in terms of combat, movement and force design. Of course what makes the Saga rules so very different are the use of custom dice and the battle boards. The two factions are represented by three forces on each side. The layout of the boards are somewhat different to the original saga boards but the mechanics are very similar. I don’t intend to put together a full review of these but rather how we coped with the introduction of the new forces.

In our first game Mark took on the Crusading force (chock full of charging knight abilities and governed by the key attributes of chivalry) whilst I took on the unpronounceable M.... faction (best described as suicidal fanatics). It became apparent in our first game that our force choice and composition did not best match the abilities of the board. For example I would have been much better off have smaller units to throw themselves against their Christian foes.

Suffice to say that the Infidel got crushed in the first game whereas the second game (Crusaders versus Saracens) appeared to be much more balanced. In the end the Crusaders won a second time round (a large part down to Mark learning the capabilities of his board).

I think it’s fair to say that saga is a firm favourite in the Shed especially when there is only two of us – this is in part down to the fact we have played sufficient times to understand the intricacies of the original boards. It’s going to take time to get used to the C&C boards but we will persevere.

Our second Crusades game was played on Monday night – this time it was a much bigger affair using Lion Rampant rules with circa 70 points aside. I have already mentioned in previous posts that we have chosen to drop the rule that a failed activation causes the whole army to miss out on orders. Each unit still has to roll for activation (attack, move, shoot) but the game now moves much quicker and a sixty point plus game can easily be fought in a couple of hours with two aside.

Alastair bought along his son on Monday so it seemed only right that as a family they should take on myself and Mark. This father/son combo played the Crusaders – they had over 18 units on the table – predominantly Knights, men at arms and armoured spears. Their forces were augmented with a sprinkling of crossbows, archers and bidowers.

By contrast the Saracens had 27 units on the table with the majority being lightly armed and far more missile troops – this was telling.

A combination of numerous missile troops, some great attack rolls and some really poor ( and I mean poor) morale checks on the Crusading side gave the Saracens a crushing victory. The Crusaders lost or had routed over 70% of the forces for possibly less than 20% of the Saracen force.

If anything volumes of missile armed troops (couple with skirmishing ability) continuously saps the Crusader strength and once courage/morale throws go awry there is little they can do to force a fight on their more lightly armed opponents. I am still in two minds as to whether these rules are biased in favour of archery but in our particular game they did force a decisive decision. I now know that the Crusaders themselves knew they had a deficit in this area of force composition and employed their own mounted skirmishers so maybe next time we will give them some of these versatile troops.

SAGA - Two versus one (until the doublecross)

Following on from our big Pike & Shotte battle a fortnight ago I  managed to put together a Saga game last Monday (10 days ago) for Alastair and Mark - a three way fight to the death.

Alastair has a nice write up on his blog which is worth while read
http://wargaminggallimaufry.blogspot.co.uk/2017/03/saga-three-ways.html

As mentioned this was a three way battle with last Warlord standing - two retinues of Vikings versus my solitary unit of Danes.

I suppose it was inevitable that the Vikings would gang up on my defending Danes.

The battlefield was set up to reflect the rugged landscape of Northumbria - one unit of Vikings would come in from the Sea (East edge of board) the other unit from the North of the village.

We were all playing with six point forces - typically Warlord, 2 Hearthguard units, 2 warriors  and a unit of levy archers
View from the Sea
View from West - the longship has landed
Another from the Sea
Final picture of battlefield  before troops arrive

The Vikings arrive !
So our game arrived with all the forces piling on from the edge of the boards. I decided the strategy of the Danes would be quite simple - Id wait for the Vikings to approach my defended position on the hill. Hopefully they'd end up attacking each other and I could capitalise on the outcome.

As you can see in the above picture the Danes have surrounded the hilltop and are awaiting the Vikings to the East and North.

The Vikings (Alastair) emerge from the village

With the Viking pushing forward I pushed half my levy out to meet them - the unit got shot to bits but encouraged the viking to close up. By now their respective forces were getting close to each other.

The seaborne Vikings (Mark surged up the hill) towards the Church
The Village Danes push forward

Alastair then sprung his trap in two successive turns he charged the Danes on the hill and got beaten and attacked the Vikings in the field to his left. The fights were so frantic I forgot to take pictures !

The picture below shows the moment before the attack - the unit in the distance hit the rear of Marks viking levy destroying them and then turned on the unit ion the far field. The Danes look downb and watch from their vantage point

With both Viking units intent on fighting one another I released my House Carls and charged down the hill into Alastair's Warlord - the Dane Axes swiftly decapitating the first viking invader

With time running out and the Vikings down to a couple of dice apiece (the Danes had not lost any) Mark capitulated and declared the Danes victorious - Hooray - after the Pike and Shotte disaster I could chalk up at least one victory this year !

Come back soon ....

Building the Saracen Army part 5

With the new found enthusiasm to finish off projects I managed to get round to basing all of my Saracen Army. In addition I bought a shed load of Little Big Man Studio shield transfers to get the shields onto the troops.

The first post on this subject can be found here

Almost finished...but hopefully worthy of at least one set of photos...

Just need to touch up a few figures, fix the pennants and the job done !

Until next time

Building the Saracen Army part 4

Back at the beginning of January I updated you on my progress with the Saracen army -

well things are still progressing well and with the plan to finish this whole project by the end of March I can say that there is light at the end of the tunnel !

The previous link is here

http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/building-saracen-army-part-3.html

So lets start with some stats... the force now comprises of the following

81 Missile Foot Troops (About 80% are armed with bows)

133 Infantry (either spear or melee weapon armed)

20 Officers, musicians and other personalities eg assassins

105 Mounted Horsemen

9 Camels

1 Wizard on a Flying Carpet (could not resist)

This gives a total Army of about 350 Figures - the mix of 1/3rd Cavalry seems about right

Primary Sources - Gripping Beast & Black Tree Design & Ebay  - it is an economy army ! - I reckon total expenditure is about £250max

This certainly gives me the volume to use these for both Big Hail Caesar Battles or even field multiple Lion Rampant or Saga forces

The Saracen Army

The Force spreads across about 6ft of table

Latest Addition - Heavy Saracen Horse

Going to need a lot of movement trays for all this infantry

Spot the difference - Fireforge and 28mm HaT - all with Gripping Beast Heads

The Red Guard

I have around 30 figures still to paint or finish off so should get these done in the next week or so.

These to finish next - I have done the camels

A few xbows - plus the leaders and other bits and pieces

I then need to finish the basing on all these !! and attach the shields with transfers. A big envelope arrived from Little Big Men Studios to do these but I still don't think I have enough.

Finally I need to source and add a number of banners to complete the force

Its all good fun and I even surprised myself when I realised I only started this in early December

Until next time

Building the Saracen Army part 2

A couple of weeks ago I started painting my Saracen Army proper. I've painted up most of the horses but put these to one side and focussed on the 130 infantry figures already based and primed.

Part 1 of this project can be found here...

Part 1

10 days later I can report 130 infantry figures painted. There are some provisos...firstly I have not painted the shields (toying with the transfer option) and secondly the basing still needs to be finished.

You'll see that my painting style is very basic, slap on the colour and paint over with army dip (medium tone). This allows me to field armies really quickly and do what I like best play with my shiny toys. I haven't decided yet on whether I might tone down the shininess with a matt spray?

Again please bear in mind I am building a 'Hollywood' Saracen Army so no reference to historical inaccuracies please.

So here we go...

This lot were really easy to paint...all black. The bulk have come from Gripping Beasts Plastic Arabs.

Sixteen Spears, Sixteen Archers and an Officer. All my units will be built in eights to allow easy conversion to Saga.

Next up is a neat little unit of Crossbows (all Black Tree Design).  I will be building another 16 crossbows from the next box of Gripping Beast Arabs.

Each of my units has a common colour  - in this case its blue

Archers are clearly something you need in a Saracen army so 16 so far. A mix of gripping beast and black tree. These guys all have blue sashes helping to tie the unit together.

We of course need some levy, javelin throwers etc. - 16 of these

Next up are some North African Skirmishers...

Next up are probably some of the nicest Black Tree figures  - there spear armed warriors. Red being the theme for 24 of them. These will look great once the shields are added and the bases done.

Finally I had around 24 sword armed and other melee weapon figures. These could be dismounted knights, guards etc. Some of them would also look great supporting a Sinbad style game...there is a thought.

And lastly the first boss...

Up next  - well there are another 80 infantry to be built md painted  But I'll start next on the Heavy Cavalry.

Until next time....
