Matti Norlin 2010 Live - Blues 3 Trappor Upp

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:10:20
Size: 160,92 MB

Sweden

This is the latest album from Sweden's Matti Norlin. It's his 4th blues CD and his first since 2002. The album was recorded live at Blues 3 Trappor Upp (3 Stairs Up) in Tranemo Sweden and features a number of Matti Norlin originals with a smattering of blues classics from the likes of Robert Johnson and Charlie Patton.

A couple of things stand out on this CD. The first is the camaraderie between Matti and his audience. Although the dialogue is in Swedish, there is obvious humour apparent and the participation between artist and fan is quite extraordinary. The second is Matti's astonishing guitar playing. As well as his picking, he also plays quite a mean slide. His forays into rag time are also quite sensational.

The set kicks off at a brisk pace. Two Norlin originals, "Mind Your Own Business" and "Mainstream Blues" split by Robert Johnson's "Up Jumped The Devil" and by now the audience are really lapping this up.

A change in tempo, any one for ragtime?. I've found another way to live and "Airy Man Blues" are brilliantly played. The Big Bill Broonzy number "How You Want It Done: is the albums highlight. Controlled tension at it's very best. A trio of Norlin originals are next up. "Biscuits" (I've never heard a blues number with references to baking powder before), "Not Allowed" and "Groovin" are real rootsy, gutsy numbers before we return to some more rag time in the shape of "Milkcow Blues Boogie" and "Piccolo Rag". Two Charlie Patton numbers, "Shake It and Break It" and "Bird Nest Bound" follow before Matti is joined by Fredrik Haake on assorted kitchen utensils (baking trays, saucepan lids and cymbal) The disc closes with a rabble rousing "Emigration Blues".

This has to be one of he best solo live albums I have ever heard. Those who were present witnessed something quite special. The rest of us will have to hear the CD, It's indispensable.. (Mike Lightfoot)

Thorsten Naslund, aka Totta, has been the lead singer in an excellent Swedish Blues Rock band since 1970. The band led the way for a Scandinavian Blues scene, and had made several records of classic and obscure American Blues songs by the time Spencer Bohren met them at a Blues Festival in Florida in 1983. Totta’s Bluesband was a major factor in spreading Spencer’s music to audiences in Europe, and this record is a direct result of cherished friendships and musical camaraderie.

Most of the songs were written by Spencer, but the recording sessions took place in Goteborg, Sweden in during the summer of 1989. The album made the Swedish Top 40, and yielded two popular radio hits in the fall of the same year. This record may still be available in Sweden or Norway, but it has never been released in the USA. Amazingly, the album contains songs by Rolling Stone Ron Wood and John Fogerty, neither of which are recorded by the artists themselves. (http://www.spencerbohren.com)

Matti Norlin 2002 Slidin Out

Genre: Blues

Sweden

Crazy. This guy is crazy. See (hear) what his guitar is put up to! Matti Norlin? I didn't know until a friend of mine mails me this CD. Crazy about guitar, this Matti Norlin sure is!

I don't know why, I didn't play the CD right away. It stayed there, on the living room table, scoffing at me with its title: Slidin' Out. And then I put it in the player ... and ... it exploded!

"What I like the most of playing in different tunings is that most of the time I don't know which notes I play". This is what Matti says in the liner notes. The first number, Not Allowed, tells it all: it tousles one's hair with the slide! And everything that follows is of the same kind, even if the beat (sometimes) slows down. In addition to the furious slide (Groovin' for instance), Matti Norlin also plays a breathtaking finger picking (Cool Down is a good sample of it). Slidin' Out is a tune "hard to play, especially since I tend to play it fast". oh yeah??!! But amongst those 14 songs (all originals), there are a few moments of relative respite, with pure jewels such as Rooftop Jive or This Day Will Never Return.

Recorded in Stockholm (didn't I tell you? Matti Norlin is swedish) in his own flat, alone with his guitars (6 and 12 strings, National, banjo) and his stomping foot as a rhythm section, you alredy have understood this CD is a little chef d'ouvre of acoustic guitar.

Album Notes

Lemon Bird – the band who should not be; four personalities converging in a musical project that unites the incompatible. With their guitar dominated hard rock, Lemon Bird originates from blues oriented rock. But thanks to their wide musical background Lemon Bird goes the whole hog—country, folk and unusual rhythms speak a foreign language in their arsenal of rock songs. Lemon Bird's ambition is to break the boundaries and tear down the walls that genre-loving people have been building the past thirty years. The most important criteria are, in studio or on stage, creativity, energy, improvisation and a passion for their music. Despite all this, Lemon Bird never loses focus on the audience.

On the song Retarted rag Matti is joined by Fredrik Haake (drums, pots and pans and kazoo) and Lennart Zethzon (screams),then you can easily imagine what it sounds like. Anders Osborne 1999 Two Times

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:55:39
Size: 127,22 MB

Sweden United States

Penchant for fiery guitar leads and trenchant lyricism is present on "Two times". An album born of a tumultuous time in Osborne’s life, the 14 songs reflect his sense of triumph and tragedy as he deals with separation from loved ones, deaths in his family, and the struggles of everyday life. Though personally harrowing, his trials sparked an artistic rebirth in Osborne, and he used his art to bring himself out of depression, as well as create a lasting and profound statement.

“It’s really very simple,” Osborne says. “What I wanted to do was just tell my story -- to say what I’ve been going through without being depressing and all that, but to speak about it in a sort of uplifting way. To say this is what’s going on and what I think life is about right now.”

Osborne’s story comes through loud and clear in such songs as “Boxes, Bills, and Pain,” a stark, percussive exorcism, "Two Times," featuring Keb' Mo' on guitar and backing vocals, and “Had My Reasons,” a slide-guitar-fueled plea for deliverance. “Highway” is a serrated-edged rocker and a cautionary tale about cocaine abuse. The hushed “That’s All,” meanwhile, is Osborne’s tribute to his seafaring grandfather who passed away, but not before imparting his philosophy of simplicity and humility to his grandson.

The album is buoyed by the sweet, soulful “Jet Stream,” which offers a powerful curative for tough times, and a pair of funky, second-line throwdowns, “Greasy Money” and “Ya Ya.” Still another twist is offered by “Trippin’ in Montana” the story of a violent and megalomaniacal leader that seems ripped from today’s headlines. Another intriguing track is the album’s one cover tune: the rollicking “Coast to Coast Blues” was written by the unlikely triumvirate of country-music hitmaker Kostas, Brill Building vet Gerry Goffin, and Bob Dylan, writing under the pseudonym Barry Goldberg. Its appearance on "Two times" marks the song’s first official release.

Osborne credits the album’s extraordinary sound and cohesiveness to his co-producers, Leon Medica and Warren Dewey. “I really think that the three of us, working together, managed to somehow become another entity together,” he says. “We brought the essence of what I am and took it over there. When I listen to this album, it feels really personal, but at the same time I it has enough of a sense of perspective that anybody can listen to it and relate to it.”

Indeed they can. Step inside Osborne’s "Two times", and you’ll want to kick your shoes off, have a seat, and hang out for a good long while. (http://www.bluesweb.com)

Anders Osborne 1995 Which Way To Here

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:51:12
Size: 117,19 MB

Sweden United States

Review by Larry Belanger

It is a rare event when an artist can deliver an example of what many would consider great American folk music; Anders Osborne does this with the ease of a true master. This is an album that serves well as an entertainment package, as well as a learning tool for those in search of roots based music.

Solid roots blues music is featured in the opening number, "Pleasin' You." The intro features some great fretwork along with Anders Osborne's soulful vocals. When the rest of the band gets into the action, there are some colorful nuances from the organ and electric lead guitar lifting the blend to another plateau. The mix for "Favorite Son" is a rock beat structured with a melody that could have easily come from the Jackson Browne camp. "Limestone Bay" has a strong Bayou country feel. Anders Osborne's vocal style also complements the melody, adding expressive color. "Don't Leave Me" features a beautiful acoustic presentation by Anders Osborne in a folk-rock style that rings out with genuine American heart and soul.

Performances of this magnitude, unfortunately, are quickly becoming a thing of the past. In the same circle as Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie and other great American folk singers, Anders Osborne fits the bill with ease. It is the perfectly crafed melodies, which are timeless pieces of art, that make this album truly appealing.
