Rospaks - Roman painting instructions and shield transfers

I recently acquired three unopened packs of AR1, Roman Imperial Legionaries, along with the original painting guide and shield transfers. The painting guide is headed sheet 2 so presumably sheet 1 dealt with the Greeks.

As I hadn't seen the instructions or the transfers before I thought I would post them here.

Rene North "Paint-Your-Own Cards" set #107 French 8th Light Infantry

Thanks to Vintage Wargaming reader Mick, I have acquired a collection of around 80 sets of Rene North Paint Your Own cards, still in their original (and unopened) envelopes.

I still have to work out what to do with these but I thought I'd start with the couple of duplicate sets. I think I will have to open them all as this will be a way of compiling a reasonably comprehensive list. I may post a fair quantity of them here, or where relevant on the Hinton Hunter as period uniform information.

To start with here are the contents of set #107 French 8th Light Infantry, as an example of what you got - 6 uniform cards, text uniform instructions, and the small brown envelope they came in.

Painting faces the Dick Higgs way

Dick Higgs, Miniature Figurine's principal designer, provided this guide as part 3 of his series Painting for Beginners in Minimag Magazine, appearing in 1971.

The beginning of a slippery slope, as far as I am concerned... I won't even mention deacls for eyes and kilts on 28mm figures....

Phil Barker's tips on horses, from Miniature Figurines Magazine Vol1 Number 2

From the second issue of Minimag, some notes on horse colours, based on a letter from Phil Barker. This is the sort of information that was hard to come by then - you can from time to time see interesting 70s humbrol enamel paint jobs on horses by trawling through pictures on e-bay.

Wargames Foundry Franco Prussian War Painting Guide

I wasn't quite sure whether to post this here or over on The Old Metal Detector blog. It also seems a little odd to think of Wargames Foundry being in any way to do with Vintage Wargaming, really being the start of the "modern style" metal figure and the creep to 28mm.

One of my favourite ranges of all time was/is the Wargames Foundry 25mm Franco Prussian War one, introduced some time in the 80s I think. They caught my eye in photos illustrating articles in Wargames Illustrated, and because of a rather nice painted unit of Turcos in the window of the small wargames shop that used to be near Kings Cross Station.

These two pages are true ephemera - interesting and useful paper based materials which are unlikely to survive. If you are thinking of trying to match the colours to the Foundry Paint System then don't bother - these colours are from a much earlier range of acrylic paints.
