We are learning about life cycle and incubated chicken eggs. They take 3 weeks to grow inside the eggs. We were able to candle the eggs around day 14 to check on the development. If we look closely you can see the chicken moving inside the egg on the video. Then on day 21 as expected they began to hatch. After 1 long day and night 13 chickens hatched. They are doing fine and growing everyday. We will keep them for 1 week and then we will send them back to live on the farm.

Egg Drop
To end our week of celebrating the letter e, we had an egg drop. The students packaged a raw egg in various containers and packing materials so that their egg would not break when dropped. Some of the eggs did break, but quite a few did not. The most popular materials used were cotton, foam, and bubble wrap.

Oviparous and Mammal sort
We sorted animal picture cards by oviparous and mammals.
I passed a card to each student and we discussed if we thought the animal laid an egg or had live babies.

Egg Writing
In honor of letter E and the upcoming holiday, we colored eggs and wrote how to papers. We read this really cute book my teammate found about coloring eggs. We enjoyed eating the eggs for snack in the afternoon. Take a look at the slide show to see all the fun.
Oviparous Animals
In honor of letter E, we are learning about eggs and animals that lay eggs. We read Chickens Aren't the Only Ones and made a list of animals that lay eggs. Then, we drew an animal that hatches out of an egg on a paper egg and added a paper shell cracking around it. The students labeled their drawing by sounding out the animal name.
