Fraction Wheel

To end our study of fractions we created fraction wheels to take home to keep practicing and share our knowledge about fractions with our families. The kids love them and were so excited to take them home. The students can spin the plate to show whole, 1/2, and 1/4.

Pizza Fractions!

We read a part of Fraction Fun and discussed using a pieces of pizza to identify what fraction of the pizza we were eating. The students made a paper pizza with paper plates, red paint and construction paper scraps. Then we cut real pizzas into 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8. We each got to eat 1/8 of the pizza.
Finally, the students drew lines to labeled their paper plate pizza's to show 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8.

Give Me Half

We read the Math Start book Give Me Half and broke crackers and folded cheese slices in half. Then we illustrated a food item and show 1/2 by drawing a dotted line down the middle.

Eating Fractions

We began our study of whole, part and 1/2 this week. We read Eating Fractions and Apple fractions and practiced cutting apples into pieces to identify that a fraction is a part of a whole. Finally, we create illustrated a whole apple and parts of an apple.

The Doorbell Rang

To continue our study of fractions we read The Doorbell Rang and made cookies to share with our friends. I gave each table of 4 students 8 cookies and they decided how to split them up into a fair share. We each got to eat 2 cookies. Then the students made their own story mat to show how to give a fair share to themselves and a friend.

Give Me Half!

To introduce our study of fractions, we read the Math Start book Give Me Half. Then we cut and shared fruit with our friends for snack. We identified if we were eating 1/2 or 1/4 of the piece of fruit. Finally, the students illustrated food and drew a line to show 1/2.
