Two Lynels appear in the "Sing for the Unicorn" episode of The Legend of Zelda TV series. Before Link, Princess Zelda and Sing made their way to Ganon's lair, where Link must fight a pair of Lynels, one blue and one red. The hero blocks their attacks and then proceeds to zap both of them, with one of them dropping a Recorder that allows them to escape the Underworld later on in the episode. Blue Lynels also appear as part of the Brotherhood of Underworld Monsters in The Moblins are Revolting firing their projectiles a little too early on the Moblin leader's command before Link and Zelda leave for the Underworld.

Characteristics
The Legend of Zelda
Lynels appear in red and blue variations in The Legend of Zelda, with the blue one dealing twice as much collision damage and taking 6 hits to kill instead of 4 with the wooded sword. They can be found around Death Mountain. Lynels fire beam projectiles at Link, which cannot be blocked with the Wooden Shield,[9] only with the Magical Shield. When defeated, red Lynels may drop either a Heart, a Fairy or one Rupee, while blue Lynels may drop either a Heart, one Rupee, four Bombs or a Clock.[note 1]
A Link to the Past
Lynels appear on Death Mountain in A Link to the Past where only 3 are found by the east bridge near Ganon's Tower. They shoot fireballs at Link, which can only be deflected with the Red and Mirror Shields. They can only be damaged with the Magic Hammer, Silver Arrows, a Spin Attack from the Master Sword, or an attack from any of its upgrades.
Oracle of Seasons
Lynels appear in red and blue variations in Oracle of Seasons. They also shoot fireballs at Link. A Golden Lynel appears in the Tarm Ruins during Winter after talking to the golden-robed Old Man. Defeating the Golden Lynel alongside the other Golden Monsters rewards Link with the Red Ring.
Oracle of Ages
Lynels appear in red and blue variations in Oracle of Ages.
A Link Between Worlds
Lynels appear in two variations in A Link Between Worlds, a white-maned type found on Death Mountain and a black variant with an orange mane that is found in the Treacherous Tower. They attack by breathing a long stream of fire that takes three hearts,[verification needed] which can only be blocked with the Hylian Shield.
Breath of the Wild
In Breath of the Wild, Lynels are a strong and intelligent type of Monster that have resided in Hyrule since ancient times.[11] They come in five different variations: the standard red-maned Lynels, Blue-Maned Lynels, White-Maned Lynels, Silver Lynels, and the Master Mode exclusive Golden Lynels. Lynels exclusively use Weapons of the Lynel Gear equipment archetype, of which they are the sole source. The only exception to this is the Lynel encountered in the Coliseum Ruins, which carries a Flameblade when encountered as a Silver Lynel. They are capable of wielding Lynel Crushers and Lynel Spears with a single hand, despite them being two-handed Weapons when held by Link. They can also be equipped with Arrows, Fire Arrows, Ice Arrows, Shock Arrows, or Bomb Arrows.
After spotting Link, Lynels will refrain from attacking and stare him down for 30 seconds, regardless of whether or not he is wearing the Lynel Mask or Majora's Mask. The Lynel on Ploymus Mountain is an exception to this, attacking Link as soon as it spots him if he is not wearing either of the aforementioned masks. This allows Link a chance to escape before the battle begins. While Link is in view during this time frame, the Lynel will begin to attack if he draws or swings a Weapon, aims a Bow, uses any Runes, or gets too close. Additionally, if they have no Weapon drawn, they will follow Link if he is far away. If a Lynel loses track of Link and spots him again, it will go back to staring him down for 30 seconds. However, this only happens if Link has not already engaged in battle with it.
Lynels have a variety of attacks, both ranged and melee, such as shooting Fireballs, body slamming, dashing, and trampling. Lynels also have the ability to teleport, doing so to either briefly flee from battle or to give chase after Link. This teleportation is only used when they get stuck on uneven terrain or they are too far away from their territory. Link can perform a Perfect Dodge or a Perfect Guard on most of their attacks, leaving them vulnerable for counterattacks. He can also utilize the Updrafts created by their Fire attacks to Paraglide up and shoot at their head with a Bow, stunning them and inflicting double damage. Every kind of Lynel is resistant to all elemental attacks and the effects granted by them.[11] The only exception to this is Urbosa's Fury, which does not abide by this rule. Unlike most Enemies, Lynels are unable to be knocked back when struct, not even with the Spring-Loaded Hammer.
Link can temporarily Mount Lynels either by sneaking up from behind, jumping on while they are stunned, using the Paraglider to drop onto them from above. They can also be mounted after they perform one of the two dashing attacks. The first is when they charge at Link, and the other is when they sprint towards Link followed by swinging their Weapon. This swinging attack takes the form of a horizontal strike with a One-Handed Weapon or smashing the ground with a Two-Handed Weapon. While mounted, Link can repeatedly attack the Lynel up to five times with any Weapon without it losing any Durability. If Link's Stamina runs out, though, he will be thrown off and lose a quarter of a Heart. Unlike the Creatures that Link can mount, Lynels cannot be soothed and tamed.
When defeated, all Lynels drop Lynel Hooves, Lynel Horns, and Lynel Guts, alongside their Weapons and a bundle of their Arrows.
A total of 22 Lynels can be found throughout Hyrule. An additional Lynel also appears on the Great Plateau during Master Mode, and two more appear in the Sword Monk's Shrine. Though most Lynels Progress as the World Level increases, the Lynels on Ploymus Mountain, in the First Gatehouse, and in the Second Gatehouse will not do so.
Link can buy a Lynel Mask for 999 Mon from Kilton's Fang and Bone shop after completing three Divine Beasts.[12] It can be used to disguise Link and temporarily avoid being attacked by Lynels.[13] Majora's Mask can also be worn to deceive Lynels.[14] These pieces of Armor will only work for a short amount of time, as the Lynel will eventually see through the disguise and attack Link.

Tears of the Kingdom
Lynels reappear in Tears of the Kingdom, acting the same as they did in Breath of the Wild with minor exceptions. In addition to attacking Link if he draws a Weapon at moderate range, they will do the same if he draws a Bow at any distance. Performing the Earthwake will also cause them to attack. If Link does not have a Bow equipped, Lynels will still attack him if he attempts to draw one while facing them. Other changes include their charge attack turning more sharply, the accuracy of their aim being dependent on Link's distance, they can shoot backwards, striking a Lynel with a melee Weapon from behind does not immediately alert them of Link's presence, and they lack elemental Arrows. If 30 seconds of staring Link down elapse and Link is not on the ground, they'll skip roaring and immediately start attacking via arrows. In addition, the number of times Link can strike a Lynel while mounted before he automatically jumps off now depends on how often has done so already. If Link runs out of Stamina and falls off a Lynel he mounted, he will be dealt its base damage rather than a quarter of a Heart. Some Lynels wear Rock Armor, which absorbs most attacks but can be destroyed by explosions and Crushing Weapons. The "rage flag" is no longer gets set if Link simply mounts a Lynel, nor is it set when Link Parries a Lynel's attack or blocks it with a strong Shield. Furthermore, if a Lynel gets hit by projectiles such as Arrows or thrown Objects by Link, it now sets the flag even if Link has not been spotted. The appearance of Lynels has also changed, and they now have a Saber Horn and a Mace Horn that they drop upon their defeat. Lynels in the Depths may also drop Large Zonai Charges. In addition, both regular Lynels and Blue-Maned Lynels no longer wear the armlets they did in Breath of the Wild. If Lynels happen to be next to any Zonai Devices or any object created via Zonaites using Autobuild, they will destroy them by roaring. They are also immune to the effects of Dazzlefruits.
If Link equips the Lynel Mask or Majora's Mask after being spotted by a Lynel without them, it will "forget" that he is in disguise and allow him to approach. This is not the case in Breath of the Wild, where doing the same will cause the Lynel to attack Link when approached (if Lynel spots Link without any applicable Mask, it sets the "it's Link" flag, that will only reset if the Lynel unloads or loses track of Link). This does not happen if their rage flag gets set, which happens if Link, a Sage Avatar, or Mineru's Construct have already caused damage to the Lynel. If the Lynel is wearing Rock Armor, it will become aggressive after an attack, regardless of whether or not its Armor was damaged.
The Lynels in the Floating Coliseum will ignore the effects of both Majora's Mask and the Lynel Mask, and they are able to detect Link's presence even if he is behind them. If Link leaves the Floating Coliseum, the Lynels will stop attacking until he returns.
Echoes of Wisdom
Lynels are quadrupedal Monsters regarded as the most fearsome in all of Hyrule.[4] They wield a Lynel Sword. One can be found in the Eternal Forest by following the hoof marks on the ground that start near the Waypoint in the center of the area. After it has been encountered once, it can be reencountered later without the need to follow the hoof prints. A dark version of a Lynel appears in Null's Body. When summoned as an Echo, they have an Echo cost of six, or five if Tri is Lv. 11. Their cost is the highest of any other Echo that Princess Zelda can summon.
When an Enemy Lynel spots Zelda, it will start growling and then attack. Lynels attack by dashing followed by a swipe, using Spin Attacks, and a double slash. These attacks deal five Hearts of damage, although the double slash only deals two and a half Hearts. Lynels are also capable of jumping on top of Trees. Zelda cannot use Bind on them. Lynels cannot be frozen, set aflame, electrocuted, stunned by ReDead screams, or sent flying by Tornandoes. If they fall into Water deep enough to reach their heads, they will drown.
Other Appearances
The Legend of Zelda TV Series
The Legend of Zelda (Valiant Comics)
In the The Legend of Zelda comics by Valiant Comics, Lynels appear in the "Day of the Triforce" story. These foes, along with other of Ganon's minions, go to the Water Town of Saria to set fire to the village, as well as capturing and injuring many of its people.[5] When Cassiopia goes to the North Palace to inform Princess Zelda of what has happened, Zelda decides to go to Saria to aid Cassiopia and the rest of the citizens. Upon arrival, Zelda encourages the townsfolk to fight back,[15] and together, the princess along with the Saria people, successfully defeat the Lynels and the rest of the monsters.[16]
Cadence of Hyrule
Lynels appear as Minibosses in Cadence of Hyrule. They have five Hearts and fight using their Bows and Arrows similar to Breath of the Wild.

Trivia
- Even though only three Lynels appear in A Link to the Past, five of them appear in the ending after completing the Palace of the Four Sword in Game Boy Advance version.[17]
- In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Lynels performing their running attack with a melee Weapon will always remain in front of the in-game camera unless there is an obstacle in their way.
- In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Lynels are the only Enemies that Link can Target while they are offscreen. They can also be targeted through walls.
- In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, a Lynel's trample can be blocked or Parried, as they are treated as an attack in these games.
- In Breath of the Wild, the Lynel at Ploymus Mountain is programmed differently than others of its kind. Namely, it does not roar while patrolling, striking it from behind with any melee Weapon or Parrying with any of the Shields from the Lynel Gear will not immediately alert it to Link's presence, and it is capable of hearing Link even when he has three levels of Stealth Up. It also lacks an armlet on its left arm, unlike all others of its kind.
- In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, all regular Lynels will only use their fireball attacks when their health is less than or equal to half of its total amount. All others can use their fireball attack at any time.
- If Link dies while atop a Lynel in Breath of the Wild, it will roar during his death animation. This does not happen in Tears of the Kingdom.
- In Tears of the Kingdom, using a Shock Emitter on a Lynel will show sparks connecting, but it will have no effect and will not anger the Lynel. Flame Emitters and Frost Emitters will also not do damage, but they will always prompt the Lynel to attack.
- In both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, viewing the controls while riding a Lynel will reveal "Riding Controls", despite Lynels not being tameable.
- In Tears of the Kingdom, Lynels' solid hitbox extends beyond the tail by about half a meter. This results in Link being unable to mount or touch Lynels from their tails.

Notes
- ↑ If Link defeats 10 Enemies without getting hit or teleporting with the Recorder, then the 10th Enemy defeated will drop five Rupees. However, if the 10th Enemy is defeated with a Bomb, then it will drop four Bombs. If Link defeats 16 Enemies without getting hit or teleporting, then the 16th Enemy will drop a Fairy. After the 16th Enemy, Link must get hit and reset the counter to zero in order to achieve this effect again. Defeating Armos, Like Likes, Keese, or Gels will not be counted.[10]

These fearsome monsters have lived in Hyrule since ancient times. They possess intense intelligence, resilience, and strength, making them among the most dangerous monsters in all the land. This is compounded by the fact that they have a natural resistance to all elements. You would be wise to challenge a Lynel only if you're very well prepared.

It was one of the best moments of my life... Anyhow.... This incredible mask can fool Lynels into thinking you're one of them! Try it for yourself! It's quite a rush.
