One of the most prominent and sustained civil rights protests in Dallas history occurred at the downtown Piccadilly Cafeteria. Beginning May 30, 1964, activists interested in desegregating the popular cafeteria peacefully protested at the site for twenty-eight consecutive days. This collection contains more than 150 photographic prints and negatives of surveillance photographs taken by Dallas deputy sheriffs of the protests and the protestors.

The first exposition of the Texas Cotton Palace was held in November of 1894. The activities lasted a month before a fire in January 1895 left the grounds damaged and the Cotton Palace unable to reopen until 1910. In 1910 exposition was on a triangular lot between Clay Avenue, Dutton Avenue, and South Sixteenth Street. It was open for a two-week-long period each year and included better baby contests, horse and automobile races, as well as canning, baking, and needlework competitions. Twenty years after the reopening of the Texas Cotton Palace, it permanently closed in 1930.

The Christian Chronicle was founded by journalist and Bible scholar Olan Hicks as a newspaper with the primary goal of providing information about Churches of Christ, modeled after publications that served other denominations such as the Deseret News. Elm Fork Echoes is the journal produced by the Peters Colony Historical Society of Dallas County. The Society was chartered in 1971 in order to preserve the history of Carrollton, Farmers Branch, and northwest Dallas County, and to promote genealogical research among its members. The area of North Central Texas ultimately known as the Peters’ Colony land grant was a large expanse of terrain granted to the Texas Emigration and Land Company, organized by William C. Peters in Kentucky. The settlers who came to northwest Dallas County were primarily from the Ohio River Valley. Claiming their land under the Republic’s generous terms, they established farms and small businesses; eventually, numerous settlements sprung up around their farms, their businesses, their churches, and their schools.

Fred and Mamie Hillmann moved to Boerne in 1948 and opened a jewelry store. Around 1954, Fred recognized the need for a photography studio and services and added that to the business. He was the Boerne photographer for the 1950s-1971, when he sold his business to Rex Rankin and Kenneth Herbst. He was also a city alderman for more than a decade. Fred and Mamie both died in 1977 and are buried in Boerne Cemetery. His collection of images was donated to the Patrick Heath Public Library. Dr. Chauncey Depew Leake (1896-1978) remains the only non-medical doctor to be in charge of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in its 125-year history. He served as the Executive Vice President and Dean of the Medical School from 1942-1955. He was an internationally famed pharmacologist, prolific writer, and one of the most significant medical historians of the twentieth century. Long before it became fashionable, Dr. Leake advocated for the “free dissemination of accumulating knowledge” and insisted that Texas Reports on Biology and Medicine, the journal he started in 1943, was “to be distributed without charge to every medical library…to which it may be possible to send it.”
