In addition to being named after, and taking its hook-handed design, from the Peter Pan character Captain Hook, Hookmon's backstory also takes some inspiration from the character of Captain Ahab from Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, a character who had also served as inspiration for Captain Hook. Hookmon's pursuit of the White Whamon is lifted from Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit of the "white whale", Moby Dick.
