Field
A Digimon's Field (フィールド Fīrudo, Americanized name: Family) is an overall branching group of Digimon that each one belongs to. There are ten different fields, each with a different theme. Digimon can have more than one field or none. Field represents three things.
First of all, Digimon of the same field are likely to be able to evolve into similar forms, making it slightly easier to construct and group cards together at a glance. In the Digital Monster Card Game, fields are symbolized by a small tile with a two or three letter abreviation, with one large letter in the upper left corner and the other large letter in the lower right corner, sometimes with a third smaller letter immediately next to it. In the Digimon Card Game, fields are represented as specific traits that allow for Digimon to evolve into Digimon of the same field, regardless of other evolution conditions.
Secondly, in some media like Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01, a field can represent the habitat that the Digimon occupies. A Digimon in its own field can get an advantage in the card game.
The Digimon Pendulums are also based on those fields (they are indeed the source of them and were later adapted into the cards), with them introducing the first themed Evolution trees, as opposed to the rather random Evolution trees of the original V-Pets.
The Digital World in which the Digimon Xros Loader Toy is set is inspired by the classical portrayal of the Folder Continent and its different areas, which happens to explain why several Zones are named after certain Fields.

Groups[edit]
Some Fields are informally characterized as groups, with specific members, in the Digimon Reference Book.
In Digimon Adventure and its related media, the Dark Masters lead armies of a specific Field each. Pinochimon leads the Wind Guardians, Mugendramon the Metal Empire, and Piemon the Nightmare Soldiers. Metal Seadramon's army is the Deep Savers[1], though it is never stated on-screen. In every case, the Field assigned to each Dark Master is the one equivalent to the Digimon Pendulum they debuted in.
Virus Busters[edit]
The "Virus Busters" exterminate the spirit of "Evil" possessed even among Vaccines and especially by Viruses, and are Digimon who have the ability to Delete. Revolmon has a deep sense of justice and acts as a "Virus Buster".[2] Though not said to be a Virus Buster, Igamon’s profile reiterates Revolmon as a Virus Buster and says the two are both comrades and rivals.[3] Plotmon, as a Holy-species Digimon, will awaken to its mission as one of the "Virus Busters".[4] Strikedramon aims to become a Virus Buster, whereas Cyberdramon is a lone warrior that is not affiliated with the Virus Busters.[5][6] Siriusmon is affiliated with the "group of justice, the Virus Busters".[7] Black War Greymon’s creed and principles are the polar opposite of the Virus Buster War Greymon.[8] The Virus Busters War Greymon and Metal Garurumon are explicitly said to fuse to form the Royal Knight, Omegamon.[9]
In contrast, Guardromon’s defensive capabilities have been used by a malicious hacker to protect against the Virus Busters.[10] Imperialdramon: Fighter Mode (Black) prefers targeting Digimon affiliated with the Virus Busters in particular to eliminate them.[11]
As noted in the Folder Continent Report, the "Virus Busters" have no particular habitat and are classified contrary to the ecosystem framework of other fields. Fragments of data thought to be that of Ancient Greymon and Ancient Garurumon were extracted from the "Virus Busters".
Nightmare Soldiers[edit]
The "Nightmare Soldiers" are described as a dark army, one that Beelzebumon could stand at the peak of, if it cared to.[12] Murmukusmon is in the ruling class of the "Nightmare Soldiers", with the title of "Count", and it manages thirty legions of demons.[13] Doruguremon has been noted to have the strength to repel an attack from Nightmare Soldiers with a single flap of its wings.[14]
Piemon leads this group in Digimon Adventure, which includes Lady Devimon and an army of Evilmon among its members.

Cards of the Fields that serve as the armies of the Dark Masters were released in Part 3 - Decisive Battle!! Showdown in Tokyo Arc. In terms of numbering, they immediately follow the Dark Master who leads them. Each have explanations of what type of Digimon form part of said armies.
- Deep Savers: 103. "The Digimon army led by Metal Seadramon, which has the entire stretch of sea under their control. It is a gathering of Digimon who specialise in making use of the sea as their battlefield, and each Digimon excels in carrying out pursuit and ambushes!"
- Wind Guardians: 106: "This Digimon army is filled with peculiar members and led by their boss, Pinochimon; however, loyalty among its members is low due to Pinochimon's selfish ways. Pinochimon's mansion, which towers over the forest, serves as their base of activities."
- Metal Empire: 113: "An army of dark Digimon led by Mugendramon. This powerful mechanised army has several species of Dark Dragon Digimon among its members, and has claimed ruins and factorial areas as their territory!"
- Nightmare Soldiers: 117: "An army of dark Digimon led by Piemon, further details about them are unknown. The Dark Masters and other dark Digimon lie in wait within their hideout, towering over Spiral Mountain's summit!"
