Jogress
Jogress or Jogress Evolution (「ジョグレス」 / 「ジョグレス進化」) (Dub: DNA Digivolution[1]/Jogres[2]) is a special type of evolutionary process in which two Digimon combine together to evolve into a new, stronger Digimon who is typically of a higher Evolution stage than either of the constituent Digimon.[3][1]
The concept of Jogress Evolution was introduced for the second Digimon anime series, Digimon Adventure 02, but the term Jogress itself was predated by the second Digimon virtual pet Digimon Pendulum, and later referenced in card game and video game adaptations.
Overview[edit]
The word "Jogress" (sometimes spelled in English as "Jogres"[4]) is a portmanteau of the English words "joint" 「ジョイント」 and "progress" 「プログレス」,[3] as in the two Digimon who undergo this evolution can be described as getting stronger (progressing) together (jointly). Normally, when two Digimon Jogress, their Digicores are totally fused together into a single Digicore, causing the two to be reborn as a single, new Digimon. However, if the Digicores fail to completely fuse, such as with Chaosmon, the Jogress is considered to be incomplete, and the resulting Digimon is extremely unstable and has a very brief lifespan.[5]

Jogress Evolution and Fusion[edit]
Over the years, there has been conflicting information on what the difference between Jogress Evolution and fusion is, if any:
- A Monmon Memo!! column from 2018 distinguishes between Jogress Evolution and fusion based on whether or not the combined Digimon is of a higher Evolution Stage than the two constituent Digimon: if it is higher, it is Jogress Evolution. If the Stage does not change, it is fusion.[3] (This definition is the basis for this Wikimon article.)
- A Digimon Profile issue from 2021 also distinguishes based on Evolution Stage effect, but it uses "Jogress" (without the "evolution" qualifier) as a generic term for all cases of Digimon fusing together. Under its definition, what Monmon Memo!! calls "fusion" (i.e. no change to Evolution Stage) is "Jogress," whereas cases where the Evolution Stage does increase are more specifically called "Jogress Evolution."[1]
- It is not unheard of for this distinction to be ignored entirely and for the terms to be used interchangeably by different Digimon productions, especially in video games. For example, Omegamon is frequently referred to as the result of a Jogress Evolution. (However, in many of the video game instances, Omegamon is categorized as a "Super Ultimate" Digimon, which in those games is considered to be a higher level than Ultimate, so in those cases it meets the above definitions of Jogress Evolution.)
- There is often no distinction at all in English-localized media, especially media from the 1990s and 2000s, in which both cases are usually just called "DNA Digivolution;" this has become increasingly less frequent from the 2010s onward. Exceptions include Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (where some instances of the term "fusion" as they relate to Omegamon and Omegamon Zwart are, variously, left as just "fusion" in the Field Guide, and localized as "DigiFuse" in a cutscene where Shiramine Nokia's Omegamon is formed); and the English edition of Digimon Profile (where "fusion" is the generic term and "DNA Digivolution" is the term for cases where Evolution Stage increases).
Both Jogress Evolutions and fusions generally only involve two Digimon, but there are some Digimon who are formed by the combination of more than two other Digimon, such as Ultimate Chaosmon and Omegamon: Merciful Mode. Jogressing and fusing are often portrayed as giving the consciousnesses of the constituent Digimon equal control of the new form, unlike DigiXrossing, where there is one clear leader who is controlling the new form. The act of a Tamer undoing a Jogress and splitting the combined Digimon back into its constituent Digimon is called Partition.[6]
| Example of Fusion a.k.a Jogress: | |

| While Examon does not evolve from a specific Digimon according to the Digimon Reference Book, Examon is also well-known as the Jogress form of Breakdramon and Slayerdramon,[7][8] as well as the Jogress Evolution of Groundramon and Wingdramon,[9][10][11][12][13][14] according to Digital Monster Card Game Alpha and Digimon Card Game. | |

Appearances[edit]
Anime[edit]
Digimon Adventure original continuity[edit]

In Digimon Adventure 02, the ability to perform Jogress Evolution is mostly tied to both the strength of the bond between the Chosen Child and their Digimon, and to the maturity and psychological growth of the Chosen Children themselves. In "The Unparalleled Union! Paildramon", Izumi Kōshirō talks to Motomiya Daisuke and his group of Chosen Children about Jogress Evolution, in which he cites Omegamon as an previous example of two Digimon combining.
While undergoing Jogress Evolution, the D-3s or Smartphone Digivices of both involved Chosen Children enter an activated state where they both change into an identical color scheme that features colors associated with both participating Chosen Children.
Digimon Tamers[edit]
During "Urgent Message from the Digital World. Culumon is...", Culumon unintentionally causes hundreds of Chrysalimon who are fighting Beelzebumon to fuse into one giant Infermon. Later, in "Evolutionary Radiance. Shining Evolution", with the assistance of the Digignomes, Culumon intentionally uses its Shining Evolution to cause many Digimon around the Digital World to evolve to the Ultimate level to help fight the D-Reaper, including three Diablomon (from the fusion of hundreds of Chrysalimon).
Digimon Frontier[edit]
In "My Painful Kick! Female Warrior Fairimon", the Three Mushmon Brothers evolve together into a single Woodmon after they're beaten by Orimoto Izumi as Fairimon. They return to Mushmon after being defeated and purified by Minamoto Kouji as Wolfmon.
Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time[edit]
During the fight against the Belial Vamdemon and Venom Vamdemon army created by Quartzmon in "The Gathering of the Legendary Heroes! The Digimon All-star Showdown!!", the lead Digimon of the previous series undergo different kinds of fusions, namely simple Fusion (War Greymon + Metal Garurumon = Omegamon), proper Jogress Evolution (V-mon + Stingmon = Imperialdramon: Dragon Mode) and Ancient Spirit Evolution (Aldamon + all Spirits = Susanoomon). When Tsurugi Zenjirou thinks they've undergone DigiXros, Tentomon corrects him, specifically naming their unique methods.
Live Action[edit]
Digimon Seekers[edit]
It is possible for Tamers with Digimon Linkers to perform a Jogress Evolution of their Partner Digimon. When this happens, a blue ring with the word "JOGRESS" is projected from their Digimon Linkers. Nagasumi Eiji and Leon Alexander do this to Jogress Fenriloogamon and Kazuchimon into Fenriloogamon: Takemikazuchi.
Manga[edit]
Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01[edit]
Jogress Evolution can be performed at will by Tamers who have two Digivices 01, namely Saiba Neo and Fujimoto Hideto;[4] Jogressing the Tamer's already-Jogressed Digimon with a third, separate Digimon is called Triple Jogress 「トリプルジョグレス」.[15] They are also able to perform Partitions at will to undo Jogresses, so Jogressing is not one-way or permanent. If a Digimon has taken damage, Jogressing has the side effect of fully restoring the Digimon's HP upon completion,[16] but conversely, Partitioning drains its HP.[15] Neo and Hideto both exploit the former side effect in a tactic that they call "Infinite Jogress" 「無限ジョグレス」: repeatedly Partitioning and re-Jogressing to keep the Jogressed Digimon's HP up and outlast their opponents.[16] A vulnerability of Jogressing is that the Jogressed Digimon will always form right in the middle between the two constituent Digimon, so its location can be predicted and, with precision timing, attacked while still vunerable; Yagami Taichi uses this vulnerability, combined with the HP-draining effect of Partitioning, to break Neo's Infinite Jogress tactic.[15]
Before the hatching of Arkadimon, Neo frequently uses random Digimon that he Jogresses together, and heavily exploits his Infinite Jogress tactic. Digimon that he has Jogressed include:
- Orgemon + Devimon → Skull Satamon[4]
- Kuwagamon + Cockatrimon → Megadramon[16]
- Megadramon + Jyureimon → Deathmon[15]
- Hideto regularly Jogresses his two partners Warg and Melga to form Omegamon. Like Neo, he also exploits the Infinite Jogress tactic.[17]
Ryo's Story![edit]
Ryo's Partner Digimon, Monodramon, forced a DNA Digivolution (Jogress Evolution) between himself and Xeedmillenniummon (Zeed Millenniumon) after realizing that it was the only way to defeat him. Together, they became Cyberdramon.
Hiragana Digimon: A Tale of the Royal Knights[edit]
While no actual evolutions have been shown on-screen, in Episode 2, "A New Joke", Omegamon pretends his hands are War Greymon and Metal Garurumon, with the punchline of the joke being that they Jogress Evolve into him.
Digimon Liberator[edit]
As Digimon Liberator follows the rules of the Digimon Card Game, Jogress Evolution works the same way as it does in it, including the existence of Blast Jogress and Partition. Sam the Clown extensively uses Jogress in its plays to evolve into its various Paildramon (EX3-010, BT20-016), Dinobeemon (BT16-077, EX3-061, BT20-074), and, ultimately, Imperialdramon: Dragon Mode (EX3-063, BT20-076) cards.
During "DIGIMON / LIBERATOR (Part 1)", Unchain forcefully merged Metatromon and Dalphomon to form Ex Maquinamon.

Video Games[edit]
Digimon World 2[edit]
Jogress Evolution is in the game, and can be done by talking to the Evolution Operators. Child-level Digimon cannot be Jogressed. Upon Jogress, a new Digimon will be created. The newly-created Digimon will be one evolution level lower than the lowest evolved Digimon that created it (for example, if two Adults are Jogressed, a Child will be born, as well as if an Adult and a Perfect are Jogressed). The newly created Digimon will have a higher max level than its parents, based on their own levels, as well as 1 more EP than the highest EP of both of them. Jogressed Digimon also earns Jogress Points or JP, which determines the result of Digimon evolution. Jogress Points are determined by the combination of the parent Digimon's JP. Furthermore, the newly born Digimon will be able to learn every move of its parents once it hits certain levels.
Digimon Adventure 02: Tag Tamers[edit]
Gaining access to new evolutions revolves around Jogressing Digimon at Digitamamon's Jogress Room. Any two Digimon who are at Child level or higher may be Jogressed together to produce a Digitama, which immediately hatches into a Baby I Digimon. The resulting Digitama is based on which Digitamas the two parents belonged to or, in certain special cases, their Digimon species at the time of Jogressing, and Jogressing certain combinations of Digitamas will yield particular Digitamas.
Digitamas are sorted by a rank system from 1 to 9, and Jogressing will often result in a Digitama of a higher rank than the parents. In addition to having increased stats, higher-ranked Digitamas generally have greater access to more powerful Digimon and/or Digimon of higher Evolution Stages. This also includes better variants of the same evolution lines, which add Digimon of higher Evolution Stages.
- For example: There are two Digitamas that yield V-mon. The first that they player can encounter is Digitama #1 (rank 2), the "V-mon" Digitama. The furthest that a V-mon of this Digitama line can evolve, assuming it meets all other requirements, is to its Adult form, XV-mon, and the evolution line ends there.
The second is Digitama #22 (rank 4), the "Imperialdramon" Digitama, which is formed by Jogressing an XV-mon from Digitama #1 with a Stingmon from Digitama #2 (rank 2), the "Wormmon" Digitama. This line adds Paildramon and Imperialdramon as, respectively, Perfect and Ultimate forms, so a Digimon belonging to the Digitama #22 line (assuming it meets all other requirements) can evolve all the way to Imperialdramon.
Every time that a Jogress is performed, the resulting Digimon will gain Jogress Points (JP). In addition to the EXP requirement, Adult, Perfect and Ultimate Digimon may only be evolved into if the Digimon also meets a minimum JP requirement for each; both EXP and JP requirements get progressively higher for higher-ranked Digitamas.
Digimon Adventure 02: D1 Tamers[edit]
The mechanic of certain Jogresses requiring that parents be of particular species within a given Digitama line has been removed entirely. Results are now consistent regardless of parents' current form. In the Jogress Room, Digitamamon now directly tells the player the identifying number of the Digitama of any Digimon in their party.
A new rare item, the JogPlus 「ジョグプラス」, is introduced. Using it gives the chosen Digimon 5 JP, helping to speed up gaining enough JP to meet evolution requirements. Although it is rare, it can still be infinitely farmed by repeatedly playing through the dungeons in which it can spawn (Plush Tower, Angel Tower, Undead Box, any of the Four Holy Beasts' dungeons).
Digimon World: Digital Card Arena[edit]
Performing Card Fusions with certain Digimon cards will cause them to undergo a special fusion. When this happens, a cutscene will start showing both Digimon turning into wireframes, followed by the resulting Digimon. Several of these fusions are Jogresses from Digimon Adventure 02, as Digital Card Arena is based on Digimon Adventure 02.

During the final storyline, when Ryo learns then that Millenniumon is in fact his true partner, his current partner Digimon Monodramon forces a Jogress between himself and Millenniummon, after weakening the latter severely, resulting in a Digitama that will one day hatch and evolve into Cyberdramon.
Digimon World 3[edit]
Certain compatible pairs of Digimon can Jogress Evolve, which in this game just acts as a powerful attack that requires an MP cost from both participating Digimon. It can be activated in the Tag menu, as an alternative to just tagging out, and any Digimon that can be Jogressed with are marked with a red orb icon in that menu. When activated, a cutscene will show the two Digimon Jogressing and performing one technique in their Jogressed form, before switching to the Digimon that was part of the pair that was not in-battle when the Jogress was activated. The majority of Digimon that can be Jogressed are also available as regular evolution options, but there are three who only appear by Jogressing, all of whom are from Digimon Frontier.

Digimon Story: Sunburst & Moonlight[edit]
Sunburst and Moonlight introduce Jogress Evolution, which is available under the "Special Evolution" menu of the DigiLab PC. There are many Digimon, including Digimon who are available through natural evolution, who can be formed by Jogress using specific combinations of Digimon (often, there are multiple viable combinations for Jogressing into the same Digimon). Like natural evolution, however, Jogress Evolution also requires that the new Digimon's minimum evolution requirements be met by the first Digimon selected to be used for the Jogress.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth & Hacker's Memory[edit]
Jogress Evolution can be performed between certain pairs of Digimon. This works the same way as regular evolution, except that the the player must also have the other component Digimon for the Jogress and both Digimon must have maximum Camaraderie. Once the Jogress has been performed, the Jogressed Digimon is treated like any other Digimon in terms of further evolution or devolution: that is, the Jogress cannot be "undone" to get both component Digimon back, and instead, the Jogressed Digimon can only be devolved into either one of the component Digimon forms.

Several NPC Digimon characters evolve during the course of the stories.
- Shiramine Nokia's Agumon and Gabumon become capable of temporarily evolving as Nokia's adventures with them continue. In Cyber Sleuth Chapter 10, during the fight at Under Zero, Nokia gains the ability to fuse them into their original form: Omegamon of the Royal Knights.
- In Cyber Sleuth Chapter 15, Mikagura Mirei has her Angewomon & Lady Devimon fuse together to become Mastemon.
- In Hacker's Memory Chapter 17, Imai Chitose's Ankylomon fuses with the Angemon that Yuri left with him to form Shakkoumon.
Digimon World -next 0rder- & International Edition[edit]
A new form of evolution similar to Jogress Evolution added to the game is ExE, short for Extra Cross Evolution. ExE allows the player's Digimon to fuse together in-battle, getting them a major power boost. ExE can be triggered by the player by spending 150 Order Points from both Digimon when they have max friendship with each other, or after both of their Digimon fall in battle randomly. However, ExE can only be used once per day.
Several NPC Digimon characters perform Jogress Evolution during the course of the story.
- The player of this game Takuto/Shiki, fuses his/her dual Digimon partner War Greymon and Metal Garurumon into Omegamon during the fight against the clone of Mugendramon.
- In the International Edition only, Kurorin and Kurocchi evolve throughout the game. Their final encounter is in Infinity Cauldron, where they've become Metal Garurumon (Black) and Black War Greymon. After losing, they Jogress into Omegamon Zwart for a moment, only for them to immediately separate.
- In the International Edition only, Piemon and Vamdemon are forced to Jogress into Voltobautamon by the Grudgeful Hand who then possesses it so it could try and destroy the World. After it is defeated, it clones the body, reverts the duo back to their prior forms, and then has friendly rematches with Takuto/Shiki.
Digimon Linkz[edit]
Digimon Survive[edit]
Agumon's evolution into Omegamon works in a slightly different way than the rest, as it resembles Jogress Evolution with Gabumon. It costs 20 SP to evolve and maintain, and requires Gabumon (in any of his forms) to be deployed as well. Despite being a fusion of both Agumon and Gabumon, only Agumon can initiate it, it causes Gabumon to vanish from the field upon evolving, and Omegamon is considered to only be Agumon in-game. If Agumon then reverts to any previous form, Gabumon will reappear on the field in the exact same place and state he was in before the evolution.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger[edit]
Certain personality types are now mandatory for Jogress Evolution. Furthermore, if the player devolves a Jogress Evolution Digimon, it will split back into its components with the base Digimon's Talent and Bond values. Note that the components will have their stats split and can potentially become weaker than their species average.
All bonus stats (blue stats) on both Digimon will be calculated onto the Jogressed Digimon on-evolution, and the Jogressed Digimon has the average stats of the two Digimon that became it.
Any two Digimon that can Jogress Evolve can now also temporarily do so in battle, which acts as a powerful attack that requires a SP cost from both participating Digimon per turn. The attack techniques of Digimon evolved by Jogress Evolution are hinted by alphabetic Digimoji under the Signature Techniques of pre-evolved Digimon. For example, XV-mon's Signature Techniques list both Hell Masquerade (Dinobeemon's Tech) and Desperado Blaster (Paildramon's Tech) in the English dub of Digimoji, aside of its own Signature Technique X-Laser. Unlike evolving out of battle, temporary Jogress Evolutions can occur regardless of personality or Agent Ranks, allowing the player temporary access to usually inaccessible Digimon during a relatively early portion of the game.
Notes on Agent Ranks (the progress shown on the list below is the bare minimum that the player must reach and can be postponed further if they missed a couple sidequests or if they did not spend their Anomaly Points on Agent Skills):
- Evolving into Adult-level Digimon requires Agent Rank 3 and cannot be done before clearing Shinjuku Rhapsody (Defeat Greymon (Blue))
- Evolving into Perfect-level Digimon requires Agent Rank 5 and cannot be done before clearing Incoming Conflict (Defeat Vulcanusmon + Divine Arms Version Ω)
- Evolving into Ultimate-level Digimon requires Agent Rank 7 and cannot be done before clearing Throne of the Underworld (Defeat Zombie Plutomon and reach the Dark Field's throne room a second time)
- Evolving into Super Ultimate-level Digimon requires Agent Rank 8 and cannot be done without clearing several sidequests unlocked in The Final Battle Over the Natural Order

Digimon Card Game[edit]
ST-9 and ST-10 introduce Jogress Evolution to the game. Digimon who possess the Jogress keyword (such as ST10-06 Mastemon) can be evolved by stacking cards that fit specific requirements (in ST10-06 Mastemon's case, a Yellow Level 5 Digimon and a Purple Level 5 Digimon), and then stacking the Jogress Evolved card itself on top of them, for no Memory cost. Digimon may have extra effects that trigger if Jogress Evolved, making it more valuable as an evolution method despite the cost of using two Digimon cards instead of one.
BT-16 introduces Partition to the game. Only Digimon that have the Jogress keyword may have this keyword. Partition allows Digimon that fit the requirements specified in the keyword itself to be played from the Partitioned Digimon's Evolution Base without paying their cost if it's removed from the Battle Area other than by the player's own effects or by battle. It can only be activated if every Digimon specified in the keyword exists in the Partitioned Digimon's Evolution Base.
EX-06 introduces Blast Jogress to the game. It works as a combination of Blast and Jogress Evolution, with all of their advantages and disadvantages. However, Blast Jogress forces the player to use specific Digimon for the Jogress, rather than the more loose requirements of normal Jogress.
