Unchain is the main antagonist of Digimon Liberator and its titular "Liberator". Initially posing as a special consultant to the debugging team, they eventually expose themselves to be the mastermind of a catastrophic event where Lacuna is fused with Cross Connectia and becomes inhabited solely by Maquinamon.

While pretending to be the original NPC of Digimon Liberator, they call themselves Chain.

Profile[edit]

A mysterious-looking child, their gender is unknown and appears neither strongly male nor female. Unchain is easily recognizable with the distinct halo above their head and wearing a straight jacket. Although many GMs and members of the debugging team know them well, no one is sure how good they are at the Digimon Card Game. They seemed to be very open and expressive and the GMs and members of the debugging team value their input.

In actuality, Unchain is megalomaniacal and seeks to "save" a Digital World in the brink of collapse by merging both Lacuna and Cross Connectia into a single, stable land inhabited solely by Maquinamon. They are outright incapable of empathy towards other people (as they admit outright in certain chapters) and will gleefully delete or destroy the data of other people (causing them to disappear from the real world) and turn other Digimon into Maquinamon because they were the only ones that were protected by the Digital Cataclysm. They are also prone to taunting their foes, especially against their sister Close or Kazama Shoto.

While using an avatar resembling recolored version of Close to taunt her, Unchain found it more fun than presenting themselves in their genderless, real form, but nonetheless decides to press on with it anyways.

Unchain tends to switch between frightening expressions and calm affability when taunting his foes or explaining his plans to others.

Deck[edit]

While assuming an avatar based on Close's data, Unchain uses an Abbadomon deck[1] that includes the following cards:

  • Black Memory Boost!! (P-039) (Episode 17 (Part 1))

Appearances[edit]

Digimon Liberator[edit]

Unchain is a Digital Lifeform of unknown origin who was created in Lacuna alongside Close. As of their creation, the Digital World was facing a horrific catastrophe, and Digimon began escaping from the Digital World towards it.

While he was in Lacuna, Unchain came to work with several Digimon and recorded their behavior. They claimed that the Digimon's behavior deeply unsettled them for reasons they cannot explain. Eventually, the catastrophe spread into Lacuna as well, and the Digimon Unchain worked with were all deleted, leaving him alone and unaffected. As a result, Unchain decided to find a way to avert the catastrophe and keep the Digimon alive.

Eventually, Unchain came across Yolkmon, which uniquely is immune to the poisonous wind like them, and copied a sample of that immunity. They also discovered that there are certain spaces in Lacuna that are immune to the wind, and seeked to create additional spaces where Digimon might live. However, a strong wind separated Unchain and Yolkmon.

Unchain would come across a new partner in the form of Metatromon, one of the Gods of the Digital World. Metatromon's side of Cross Connectia is destroyed, and it wanted to save its other half from the calamity but it hated him and would not listen to what it has to say, choosing to remain there, and thus he begged Unchain for help, which they agree to. Metatromon then became Unchain's Digimon partner as a Maquinamon. Unchain then copied and pasted Yolkmon's immunity onto Maquinamon, then turned numerous other Digimon in E.G.G. into copies of the Digimon using his ability to induce an Alter Ride and trained them.

Unchain then ran into Cool Boy in the Jewel District, where the two made a deal with saving the Digimon together. However, unlike Cool Boy, Unchain's plan involves fully populating Lacuna with the Maquinamon, rewriting other, non-resistant Digimon into similarly protected Maquinamon; and sacrificing humans (which they possesses and directly admits that they have no empathy for) to use as security shields for E.G.G. Cool Boy knows this, but decides to withhold the information and secretly formulates a plan against them.

Unchain's name was first mentioned in "GODDESS FROM THE ICE AGE", Kazuki Suzune meant to report to Cool Boy, in his role as GM, about the events that she went through with Oumi Reina. However, he was talking to Unchain at the time. Since Suzune thought Unchain could be a traitor, she decided not to tell them, and instructed Yuuki to keep the story to herself as well.

Shortly after Kazama Shoto was officially administered into the Debug Team, Unchain released a group of Maquinamon into LACUNA and tasked the Debug Team to an errand to capture all of them. This doubled as a test run for the newly-cloned Maquinamon to see if they can truly adapt to LACUNA's climate. While the Debug Team was dealing with the Maquinamon, Unchain and Cool Boy were exchanging info about each other's work and remarking on their mutually exploitative relationship, then teleported a trio of NPCs into Obsidian Desert and right in front of Close to gauge the Debug Team's cooperation skills. Once the test-runs were complete, Unchain gives the Debug Team some time to prepare before launching a catastrophic event where he summoned an Imperialdramon: Fighter Mode (Black) to possess the NPC Sam the Clown, then releasing it alongside 49 Imperialdramon: Dragon Mode (Black) clones into Lacuna. As the attacks were happening, Unchain himself went to the place where Shoto was in to find him while Cool Boy was secretly thrown into Cross Connectia to find Dalphomon for him, something that he willingly went along with to use against them. Unchain eventually runs into Shoto wandering around the emptied quest server. Zenith ends up being a causality of the incident and got his in-game avatar destroyed while protecting Owen Dreadnought, and Violet Inboots almost ends up getting hers destroyed too while dueling with Sam the Clown only for Shoto to intervene in-time and save her.

After the Black Imperialdramon incident, Unchain approached Zenith, who was in an alternate dimension with his body destroyed, leaving him unfulfilled and unsatisfied from being unable to duel Owen again. There, they stroke a deal with him where they would restore his body, but he must disguise himself as an NPC and assist them in an upcoming attack. Zenith willingly accepted the deal out of a powerful desire to rematch with Owen. He then approached Yao Qinglan forcefully seized control of Digimon Liberator from her.

A month later, with all preparations complete, Unchain unleashes a final attack on LACUNA to rewrite it and rid it of all humans and non-Maquinamon Digimon, disguised as the final event of Liberator's main quest. E.G.G. is destroyed by lightning and a massive flock of Maquinamon, Mulemon and Mockingbirdmon appear from it, and all players in the game that used the T.A.L.E. system were prevented from logging off. As the Debug Team did not use the T.A.L.E. system, this doubled as a declaration of war against them. They then made an announcement where they called themselves "Chain" and claimed to be the NPC presiding over the game, and explains the rules of the "event" to the players -- the Maquinamon they unleashed will evolve and possess NPCs all over LACUNA, which the players must defeat and gain points. While the unsuspecting players were initially unamused that it was another grinding quest, Unchain warns them that they cannot lose even one battle under any circumstances, as the Digimon will possess humans and enslave them. Furthermore, the player who gained the most points will have a chance to duel Zenith, who is now supposedly an NPC called "Xeno" created specifically for the event. Shortly he finishes making the announcement, he draws Close in, brainwashes her and takes Sunarizamon from her. Kinosaki Arisa defeats Close and frees her from Unchain's control using her own deck that has her sister's cards and Nyabootmon in it.

Meanwhile, Close sets off to confront Unchain alone and cites that the attack he unleashed has now caused countless causalities as it goes on. She manages to reach Unchain, but they do not confront her personally. Instead, they confronted her with a remote-controlled avatar that resembles her. Unchain's avatar wields a Negamon deck with Sunarizamon included in solely out of spite. They then announces their intent to collect all the unique emblems to unleash a full Alter Ride in Lacuna, and alters the rules to enable ante so the winner of the duel will gain possession of Sunarizamon. They initially get the upper hand, but Close's Unique Emblem activates when Sunarizamon checks one of her security cards, causing Sunarizamon to be automatically snapped out of its brainwashing and turn directly back to Close's side. She then turns the tides on Unchained's avatar with Pyramidimon and Magneticdramon, defeating them. Unchained was frustrated on the loss, but remarks to themself that everything was going to plan with the data fragment Cool Boy left behind in his hands and Zenith being dispatched as Metatromon approaches him from behind.

As the attack rages on, Shoto manages to defeat enough NPCs to reach Zenith, only to be easily destroyed by the master duelist. Zenith tries to destroy Pteromon's egg, but Shoto lets himself humiliated to protect it. Unchained then takes him away and imprisons him in a strange space to prevent him from intervening with the final stages of the catastrophic event and allowing the duel between Owen Dreadnought and Zenith to commence. Unchain explains their plan to completely rewrite and remake Lacuna as a place inhabited by only Digimon who are resistant to the poison to Shoto, and reveals to him that Pteromon is actually their original partner. Unchain then tells Shoto that they imprisoned him out of spite, but nonetheless gives him Cool Boy's data fragment to see if he could escape the space.

Eventually, Owen manages to defeat Zenith. Regardless if Owen defeats Zenith or not however, Unchain will unleash the final cataclysmic event to destroy and rewrite Lacuna. Zenith's BEMmon reveals himself to be a data collector for Unchain and evolves into Ragnamon, who provides the foundation of the new world. They then rewrite all of the Digimon in Lacuna into Maquinamon and sacrifice all of the normal players inside Digimon Liberator as the bedrock for the new E.G.G., leaving only the Debug Team to be protected by their Emblems.

Unchain then summons a large group of Maquinamon in their various evolution stages against the Debuggers. They manage to overwhelm them, successfully getting rid of one in the process and comes dangerously close to getting rid of Arisa, but Shoto manages to escape the strange space in-time to save her. While Unchain was surprised that Shoto really got out, Cool Boy comes in with Dalphomon trying to attack Unchain and Metatromon, but Dalphomon was forcefully absorbed by Metatromon as Unchain planned to, evolving it into Ex Maquinamon, a Digimon Unchain called the "Digimon Liberator". Ex Maquinamon merges Cross Connectia with LACUNA, creating a stable world where the only Digimon that exists are Maquinamon. In actuality, Cool Boy already predicted Unchain's plans to remake the entire world and planted Dalphomon with a trojan horse that rewrites Unchain's programming into those of an standard NPC so he is slowed down by duel requests. Cool Boy then proposes that the Debug Team defeat all of the Maquinamon and reach Unchain, which becomes possible with new reinforcements in the form of the Debug Team cast that went to Cross Connectia, alongside all of the denizens Yuuki brought out from it. Owen then used the mask fragment Zenith left behind for Yao Qinglan to create a new area, a copy of Shinjuku, and relocated all of the debuggers and Unchained into the newly-generated map where Owen and Shoto challenges them to a situational 2v1 battle.
