A Demon Man Digimon which has the appearance of a horse-riding warrior. It is a courageous warrior who reigns as the general of the Musyamon corps. Although it is a general, it voluntarily stands at the head of its own army, and prefers fighting styles which cut into the enemy. Its lower half is fused with its horse in order to move more easily about the battlefield, so that even during a pitched battle it is able to swing its sword without losing its balance. Its Special Move is using the gigantic zanbato "Ryūzan-maru" it holds in its right hand to unleash its "Uchikubi Gokumon", which has the power to cut through the opponent's armor with its gigantic blade, regardless of whether they are defending themselves. Its "Jūmonji Giri" is an attack it unleashes using the youtou it holds in its left hand, which releases a shock wave, generated by the nimble swings of its slender blade, that can cut the opponent apart crosswise.

Digimon Frontier[edit]

Zanbamon forms an attack group leading with Ultimate Griffomon, Gran Kuwagamon, an Armor Pteranomon and some Adult Airdramon to battle against the two Royal Knights who served Lucemon. They were unsuccessful, and most (including Zanbamon) were easily beaten and scanned.

Digimon Adventure:[edit]

In the past, Zanbamon's army, which consisted of Musyamon, fought against Cres Garurumon's army. Cres Garurumon won, however, Zanbamon's blade never went away and continued to exist in the shape of a curse. Cres Garurumon then used his own soul, his "Kijū Engetsutou", to seal said blade and calm the curse. However, it was unable to contain Zanbamon's curse forever, and it unleashed itself some time later, destroying several villages, starting from Strabimon's as it was sealed inside said village. As a curse, it had no physical body and could not be hurt by any attacks, but it was still able to attack others. However, it now could not exist in daylight, and would only appear at night.

Due to Zanbamon's destruction of their villages, several Digimon banded together under Mojyamon, creating a new village that would send Digimon at night to distract Zanbamon, so it would not find them as they hid in a cave. However, Zanbamon was able to kill said Digimon, with him doing so to Gryzmon and Hanumon, and nearly doing so to Strabimon, when Ishida Yamato and Gabumon first found it in "The Gold Wolf of the Crescent Moon". Gabumon, as Garurumon, saved Strabimon, then tried to attack Zanbamon with Fox Fire, only for it to go straight through the Ultimate Digimon's body. It disappeared afterwards, as day arrived, much to Yamato and Garurumon's confusion.

During the next night, Yamato and Gabumon took over the role of distraction, with the latter fighting Zanbamon as Were Garurumon: Sagittarius Mode, though he was still unable to harm Zanbamon. Yagami Taichi and Metal Greymon arrived soon afterwards and joined the fight, though they were just as useless, even after both Digimon evolved into their own Ultimate levels, Metal Garurumon and War Greymon. Nonetheless, they were able to survive the night.

In order to defeat Zanbamon, Yamato and Gabumon followed Strabimon back to his village, where they found the "Kijū Engetsutou". However, due to Zanbamon breaking out of it, it was in a broken, withered, beaten up state, which Strabimon believed made it useless. Nonetheless, Garurumon took it with him, as his dreams called him to it. During the night, Metal Greymon stalled Zanbamon, before Yamato and Were Garurumon: Sagittarius Mode arrived. The latter tried to fight Zanbamon with his newly-found weapon, only for it to break in their clash. Were Garurumon: Sagittarius Mode refused to give up on it, grabbing the piece of the blade that had broken with his bare hand and blocking Zanbamon's own giant sword with it, while Yamato unearthed the rest of the blade and used it as well despite being significantly bigger than himself. This caused the sword to regain its original form, which filled Were Garurumon: Sagittarius Mode's body with energy, allowing him to Ultimate Evolve into Cres Garurumon. In that form, he was able to easily kill Zanbamon, and this time its sword disintegrated with it.

Manga[edit]

Digimon Next[edit]

Zanbamon is one of the Three Commanders of the Commandments working for Barbamon.

He first faces Tatsuno Tsurugi and Agumon as they try to enter Light City, having predicted their plan to do so. Zanbamon proceeds to let the rest go, as he can beat Agumon in five seconds, later revised to three when he evolves into Geo Greymon, giving him plenty of time to catch up, and he backs up that claim by defeating Geo Greymon in one Jumonji Giri, which he only manages to survive thanks to being an Illegal and not without harm, as he's returned to Koromon.[20]

After Tsurugi and Agumon, now Rize Greymon, reach System Base, Zanbamon faces them. During the fight, he reveals that he reached the Ultimate level by killing 99 dragon Digimon with his Ryūzan-maru and wants to make Rize Greymon his 100th kill. Acknowledging the power born from Tsurugi and Rize Greymon's bond, he destroys Tsurugi's Digivice iC in order to cut said bond[9].

During the fight against N.E.O, Zanbamon joins Tsurugi's side alongside the rest of the Commandments, pointing out that he was never brainwashed but refuses to accept a future without the warrior's code[21].

Digimon Story: Time Stranger[edit]

Zanbamon is one of the Digimon that Kunlun brought from Shambala into Iliad. However, because they ended up having too much fun in the High-Rise Colosseum, they forgot about their mission, so Kunlun sent Yuki Dan/Yuki Kanan to get them back in the side mission "The Helper From Shambala".

The Agent found Kotemon, Kotemon's master Musyamon, and Musyamon's master Zanbamon in the High-Rise Colosseum in the side mission "The Forgetful Helpers". Musyamon recognized the Agent as a worthy warrior as they knew Kunlun. Kotemon explained to them that they went there to train but found it difficult to fight in a world they were unaccustomed to and ended up losing track of time. Musyamon refused to return, however, as fighting there gave them joy, while Zanbamon thought they should respect Kunlun's orders. As a way to bridge both positions, the trio challenged the Agent to a battle as they only listened to the strong. They can then be fought as the "Master & Pupil Trio", part of the "Greatest Omega Carnival" side mission.

Kotemon, Musyamon and Zanbamon are the bosses of the side mission "The Forgetful Helpers".

  • Kotemon can use Comet Hammer III, Speed Field and Fire Men. It is weak to Water and Earth, and resists Fire and Electricity.
  • Musyamon can use Shadow Fang III and Kirisute Gomen. It is weak to Fire and Wind, and resists Water and Earth.
  • Zanbamon can use Lunatic Gate III, Guard Break and Uchikubi Gokumon.

After defeating them, the Agent talked to them in the waiting room, where they acknowledged their strength. For Zanbamon, that meant allowing the Agent to face his own master, Susanoomon, the ultimate hero. They refused to return to Kunlun unless the Agent managed to do so. Musyamon then summoned Susanoomon to the High-Rise Colosseum, where the trio sung his praises after the Agent talked to him.

After the Agent and Susanoomon's fight, in the waiting room, Kotemon and Musyamon were shocked about Susanoomon's defeat. Zanbamon took it with grace, praising how well his leader fought while he adjusted to an unfamiliar world. Susanoomon, however, was genuinely happy about the Agent's strength and acknowledged that was the only reason for his defeat. As the Agent was strong, the Shambalans were now willing to listen to them. The Agent told them to go back to their mission, which made Zanbamon and Susanoomon accept they had gotten sidetracked as they trained, but that also meant they ended up loving the world and wanted to protect it even more. Musyamon then contacted Kunlun and the group left for their meeting spot, with Susanoomon sure they'd meet again. They then moved to the top of Central Tower, where they shared their data with the Royal Knights rather than joining the battle as they weren't adept at aerial combat in Iliad.
