The boys of Frampton University’s swim team are renowned for their prestige and excellence. Their dominance and ruthless competitiveness invoke fear in any who cross them. Their leader, Remington Frampton, is the enigmatic heir to the university’s legacy and my own, personal nightmare.
Fallon My plan was simple. Attend classes, study hard then graduate, leaving this town behind. But life has a way of surprising us, doesn’t it? I had to go and piss off the golden god of FU and as fate would have it, my new stepbrother. They call him “the Shark” for a reason. His predatory instincts extend beyond the pool. Now, I'll be lucky to make it out alive.
Remy I’m royalty on this campus. Everyone bends to my will or they end up swimming against the current—everyone, except Fallon Monroe. Her defiance both intrigues and infuriates, creating ripples in my carefully orchestrated kingdom. She’ll never be free once I take a bite. After all, family is forever, right?
But the past never stays buried for long–something hidden will eventually surface. Is there a way to navigate these treacherous waters without sinking our ship? Or are we in too deep?
This is an enemies-to-lovers romance with a morally gray hero and a feisty heroine. Are you ready to dive into Frampton University?

No star rating, because I DNF’ed this about 20% in. I don’t always write reviews for books that I DNF, but I do it when a book has only great reviews, which made me feel misled. At the time that I'm writing this, this book ONLY has "it was amazing!" 5 star reviews, which is misleading.
This is not a horrible book. It might not even be bad, maybe it gets better after 20% in. I'm just not feeling it and I'm bored. It's college bully, and he's a swimmer -- I liked the idea of a hero who is an athlete that's not a hockey player, for once, I'm sick of the hockey trend. And, it's been a while since I've read MF bully, not RH.
All the reviews were like, "this author brings such depth to her characters!!!" No, she doesn't. That’s simply not true. These characters are so regular and surface-level, with nothing special about them. He gets obsessed with her after 1 interaction. I'm not against that if a book writes it in a way that convinces me and draws me in – like, Sovereign did “obsessed after 1 meeting” pretty well, in a way that worked. But here, it's not written in a way where I feel it. It has no depth, no flavor.
Also, there’s a dub con bj scene. I'm not offended by that type of scene being in fiction - I sometimes enjoy it. But it wasn't done well. A scene like that can't just be plopped down with no effort or skill. It needs to dig into the emotions and the psychology of it. If the heroine is just going along and letting him do that, why? How is she feeling about it? What's happening in her mind? Why is he doing that to her, what's happening in his mind? Sam Mariano books are good at digging into that. If she’s fighting back, is it physical, or more psychological, where she’s trying to manipulate the situation to mentally get the upper hand (like the great non con scene at the beginning of Dukes of Ruin)? A dub/non con scene can be interesting, tense, and emotionally complex if the author does it well. It can be fun or hot, if it leans into the hero being deliciously unhinged. None of that applies, here. In this book, it’s just There. It feels like author put it on her “trope checklist." There's no thought put into the scene; it's just checking off a box on a checklist. Maybe I sound ridiculous, waxing poetic about how to write a dub/non con scene. But there IS an artistry and craft to it, and this book doesn't have the juice.
For readers new to Author LB Martin, she has this remarkable talent for delving deeper into people’s emotional responses and their long-lasting effects on challenging situations in all her stories. Their lives are not easy, nor is their path to healing.
In “Backstroke,” Fallon’s challenges are multi-layered, and they come afloat when she attends college and meets Remy. The intense interactions between the two characters are done well. The dark themes start early and are demonstrated in a way that allows enough time to establish the build-up of Fallon and Remy’s romantic relationship. Too often, I’ve read other books where the transition time is not enough, but LB doesn’t do that.
I was completely absorbed reading “Backstroke.” LB writes characters, though fictional, that resonate well with readers, making the story more impactful and enjoyable. I liked it.
WOOOOAH Okay let me gather my pearls because I clutched them babies a little too hard 😏🤭
Fallon is a relatable gal with a wild side and a past that haunts her, insecurities that she carries, and scars that you both can and cannot see throughout.
Remy is a hot, cocky attitude having, arse! But we love him for it.
The dialogue / back and forth banter was laced with poison and I loved it, the transition from tension to sudden obsession new for me and I have to say - I loved it!
Remy's bestie Nix sounds like a stand up guy for the most part and I wanted some more of him even though it's not his story ☺️🤭
Overall (no pun intended) Backstroke was an immersive read with wonderful storytelling and pacing. I need this on my shelf and shooooooooowheeeeeee! That spicy art is going to be so good.
Please be sure to check the content notes from L.B. Martin before you dive in. Backstroke has some of our favourite themes like step-sibs, who hurt you?, OTT/JP MMC, Panic attacks, and more.

I recieved an ARC copy and I'm leaving a voluntary & honest review. Thank you!
I really enjoyed reading this. It took a chapter or so to get into it, but don't let that keep you from reading it. It's worth the read. I like that there was a morally gray hero. we get to see both of Remy's sides. His Pink Psycho side, and his vulnerability side. It really makes this character interesting and believeable.
Of course, it wouldn't be a great book without some angst. That surprise character entrance had me gasping.
But I do feel like something was missing or there was a slight inconsistency. When Emmerson started showing his true colors, Remy realized he had a traitor on the team. But then, in the end, Emmersons partner wasn't even someone at the college. So, who told Emmerson everything about Initiation Night? I find it hard to believe that *not saying names because spoilers* he found all the information out on his own. Also, I felt like Fallon was a little bit too whiny. Especially when she tried to stay away from Remy.
But it was still a great read! And the ending was super cute! I can't wait to read Nix and Gray's story.
Omg I just finished this book, and I absolutely loved it.
This is a darker bully romance that involves college students Fallon and Remy.
Remy is the king of campus and takes an instant interest in Fallon.
The possessiveness and obsession he has is delicious 😋. The relationship between these two is mwah! 💋
Tropes included: • Dark Romance • College Romance • Sports Romance • Enemies to lovers • Bully • Stepbrother • Touch her and die • Praise • BDSM • Ice Play • Primal Play • Masks • Stalking • Cat and Mouse
I loved this book and am so looking forward to the next book in the Boys of Frampton University.
Backstroke is a fantastic book! I actually read it twice already it's just so good!!
This is a dark bully romance so please read trigger warnings! If you don't have triggers and love dark romance this book is definitely worth adding to your TBR! I love the character's, storyline, and slight twist in this book. I really didn't want to put this book down! I can't wait for book 2!
Backstroke is the first in the boys of Frampton series an enemies to lovers story.
We get to meet Remy and Fallon in this book Remy is a senior at the college and Fallon is just starting, there first meeting is when Fallon is just heading to her dorm and bumps into Remy to say sparks fly would be an understatement.
The confrontation are heating in both sexual and bullying
Fallon character is written so well you get to see the girl behind the walls she puts up , I loved how her character grew throughout the book
Remy character was as described possessive, and dark wished we saw a bit more of him
Nix and Gray characters intrigued me ,so looking forward to seeing there story.
LB Martin did it AGAIN! I devoured this book in one sitting! If you’re someone who likes a dark college, bully, stepbrother romance (my absolute favorite trope!), I highly suggest checking this out!
Featured tropes: bully/enemies to lovers, virgin FMC, touch her and die, obsessed MMC, masked men, step siblings
Trigger warning: past parental abuse/alcoholic parent, fear of bodies of water, PTSD/anxiety, dub-con, kidnapping, on-page murder
Review: 4/5
Friends. This book had me hooked from, if we're being honest, the content warnings before the book even started! Let's dive in.
Things I liked: - Would I ever want to actually be with a guy like Remy? Hell no. Was he just the most delicious thing to read about? Hell yes. Remy is a Grade A asshole to, well, pretty much everyone. He always gets what he wants and in Backstroke, he wants our FMC, Fallon. - I loved Fallon and her ability to instinctively know what buttons to push to piss Remy off. I enjoyed that the way her past molded her into the woman she is now led to her giving no effs. Where everyone else would have been scared of Remy, Fallon poked the bear with no hesitation (which often led to some spicy spicy times)! Remy needed to be taken down a peg or two and Fallon delivers. - For a bully romance, there were some great moments of banter and sarcastic remarks that had me laughing out loud. I love me a good witty game of verbal tennis.
Things I disliked or missed the mark: - I would have liked to see the bully/enemies part of the book be extended a bit. Remy was obsessed with Fallon from the moment they ran into each other (literally) for the first time. She told him off and he declared her his new mark. Like, they really hated each other. And I loved it. And then it was legit like a switch flipped and he realized he was instead in love with her. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that part of an enemies to lovers story too but I think this could have done with a little more build up. Or even just an added scene where someone tries to hit on Fallon or something and Remy goes off. I don't know. Just a little more something on the enemies side of the story would have felt more complete to me. - We learn a lot about Fallon and her background which really helps us understand her character. I would have loved to see something similar for Remy. Yeah, we know he's Frampton U royalty and that he doesn't get along with his father. But that's about it. A little more insight into Remy's history I think would have been great to connect with his character a little more. - I had a hard time grasping the passage of time in the book. It wasn't a big deal but I think that was part of what contributed to feeling like we went from hate to love so fast, because I couldn't necessarily grasp how far removed we were from the beginning of the school year which is where the book starts. It didn't make pacing feel off so that's bonus, just left me wondering "when are we?"
Overall, I loved enrolling at Frampton U. Sometimes you just need a dark, gritty story and this one fit that bill. It wasn't the darkest romance I've read but it still scratched that spooky season itch and it was a quick read. I will 100% be reading the next installment because I am chomping at the bit for Nix and Gray's story. I love me a good trio and I'm sure these two Frampton U boys will deliver!
TALK ABOUT OBSESSED - Also, why are most of the men with Daddy issues named Remington (Remy)?? Haha
THIS BOOK WILL NOT BE FOR EVERYONE AND THAT’S OKAY. But don’t sh*t on the author’s work because YOU elected to ignore their warnings.
This is a dark academia (university), M/F, fast-burn with an obsessive/possessive MMC and an FMC who has dealt with her more than fair share of trauma.
Remington Frampton is the campus god at Frampton University (can you guess why? *wink*) who also happens to be the cliché playboy. He’s a one and done kind of guy. Until he bumps into Fallon Monroe (literally), who has blue hair, piercings galore and has more black in her wardrobe more than any other color.
Each have their own Daddy issues to deal with but only one of them truly has some trauma to overcome.
I LOVE how Remy becomes obsessed at first sight. This man is not for everyone but damn I love an MMC that decides immediately on their FMC and then does his absolute worst to make sure she understands his level of obsession.
I’ll be honest, I’m on the fence about Fallon which is why my rating isn’t much higher. She’s described as feisty but eh, I beg to differ. She’s more… non-compliant. I understand she went through a couple of life-altering events and that would change anyone but I feel like Fallon has no personality.
We just get these little bits of insight; enough to propel the story but not enough to give the characters the range and depth needed to feel emotionally invested in. But I suppose that’s what is sacrificed with a fast-burn.
There is plenty of spice but nothing too out of the ordinary. Remy’s best feature is his mouth and all his dirty talk. My only irk was the way Fallon lost her virginity. I know this is a work of fiction but it should at least be somewhat realistic for a first time of penetration with a penis (just saying haha…).
Also, FYI there isn’t much swimming going on for being marketed as a sport-adjacent romance.
I applied to receive an advanced reader’s copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was the first book I have read by this author, and I was definitely impressed by her writing. I love a dark romance with a morally grey MMC. Although they make me beyond angry, I actually enjoy a good bully romance. On top of all of that, I love a sports romance, especially when we get a new sport to read, like swimming in this book. Also, having been a competitive swimmer, I felt an unfortunate connection to it ( I have some serious bad memories of my time as a swimmer). But that aside, I thought that this book did a good job of creating a dark bully romance that was entertaining and engaging. I thought that the characters were relatable and I was actually interested to see where their story went.
I think that I really loved Fallon as a FMC. I always appreciate a strong willed female main character that can stand up for herself against her bully. She doesn’t cave just because Remy is the all powerful king of the swim team. It’s always good to see a FMC that is able to have banter with someone that always gets what he wants. Her past has molded her into the strong willed female that she is instead of breaking her. I love a strong woman and that’s what Fallon is.
Remy. Oh Remy. I have known people like Remy. Someone who is used to getting what he wants. Would he have been so obsessed if Fallon was another to give him what he wants? Probably not. Like many morally grey MMCs, his obsession drives him and while I would never want to encounter him in my actual life, he has all of the wonderful characteristics that I look for in a dark romance/bully romance MMC.
Backstroke was the first in the series and I am interested to see what the rest of the series holds. I love a university romance, and this was one has some lovely spice for those looking for it. It was definitely a book worth reading and one that has caught my attention so that I will be sure to be back for the next book in the series.
For an author who claims to be at her starting mark, beginning to dip her toes into the colder and darker waters of storytelling with The Boys of Frampton University, L.b. Martin seems to have caught the wave of comfort quickly and can hold her own with the pros without having to paddle very hard. Who knew swimmers were so damn domineering and so well versed in ALL their abilities. 🥵 I’ve been told swimming takes the utmost concentration and superior perseverance to be great—I guess that applies to perfecting their bedroom skills as well—because let me tell you, the pool isn’t the only thing warm and wet right now. Although I suppose when you’re forced to date a swimmer with lungs used to holding air in for extended periods of time, and a mouth focused purely on the finish line, wearing dry pan-tees are obsolete anytime of day, since you’ll by soaked before they exhale. 😮💨
Like when I read Backstroke… poof… somehow all my dry pan-tees are not so dry. Every chapter had me crossing my legs for relief. The same relief Fallon tries for- but is denied 😳 because Remy won’t let her touch HIS 🐈 without his permission. Whelp, there goes another dry pair just thinking about the way he “pun/ish/es” her when she does defy him, or try to at least. Ooo, what I wouldn’t give for one of his puni/shmen/ts right about now.
Dark Romance, Obssession, Stepbrother, College, Sports, past abuse / traumatic events, some possible triggers for readers. Remy has been through several traumatic events in her past. She gets a scholarship and starts college looking forward to life on her terms. Remy, captain of the swim team, is the typical playboy with a hard family life. Until he meets Fallon. He quickly becomes obsessed. They both have strong personalities and clash from the moment they meet. But that only heightens the sexual tension between them. Remy is possessive to the extreme when it comes to Fallon. I thought his character might be a little darker. In the end they brought out the best in each other. It took time to get there. I liked the story. Swimming is not a regular sports romance. It made this book more unique than other dark romances. Fallon stayed true to her personality for the most part. She gave in to Remy at points, but on her terms. I would definitely recommend giving this book a read after you consider the possible triggers.
Backstroke was a good sports romance story. I loved that it was a different kind of sport. One we don't see to many written about.

Fallon and Remy, I love their story! The enemies' cat and mouse games were so much fun to read, and when they finally gave into their feelings, it was beautiful! We get lots of spicy scenes and a story you can't put down! I loved that they supported each other and made each other stronger.
I can't wait for the next book in Frampton University series!
Backstroke is beautifully and darkly written. L.B. Martin is an incredible writer and I loved being able to fully immerse myself into her storytelling. With that being said, I DID NOT want to put this book down and actually called my boss to tell her I would be late coming into work.
The MMC, Remy is exactly how toxically obsessed I want my man to be with me. 🥵🥵
Remy and Fallon's chemistry is to die for. A strong and determined fmc who works fiercely against falling under the MMCs spell but he just does things to her that she just can't fight. 😈😈😈 EXACTLY how I love my bully romances.
Oh and the added bonus that they ended up falling into my favorite taboo category 👀.
If you love bully romances with a dash of taboo you aren't going to want to miss this book!
🔪stepbrother 🔪dub co n 🔪masked men 🔪enemies to lovers 🔪virgin fmc 🔪touch her and ☠️
Oh. My. God. I loved this book. It was really interesting that it was a swim team and not another sport. I definitely think this is a book you should fly into blind so I’ll refrain from spoilers.
Fallon has solidified a spot as one of my favourite FMCs of the year. She’s smart and strong and everything I love to see in an FMC.
Remy is amazing but I do wish there’d have been a more subtle transition from cat and mouse to possessive love/obsession.
I think the book would have benefited from a little more world building with the team/friends and of the climax/danger but overall SOLID read. It’s going back on my re read list for sure.
If you love tension and banter and an enemies to lovers arc, I think you will really enjoy this book.
I loved how Remy was so into Fallon from the start - ok yes, it was an OTT, obsession at first but he could not get her out of his head. We start to see these little moments of…well something between them…but then they go back to clashing!
There is a scene that involves hide and seek that is wild and steamy!
Oh Fallon, she is carrying some past trauma and my heart went out for her. She is strong and feisty and was not about to back down or listen to Remy!
What to Expect: Sports Romance (Swimming) Dark Academia Enemies to Lovers Bully Romance Forbidden/Step Siblings Who Hurt You? Morally Grey Little Fox 🦊
L.B. Martin has won my heart over again and again...and of course she continued this trend with Backstroke and I can't wait to see what's in store for the future.
Backstroke is the perfect depiction of a Bully Romance, and Remy is the biggest bully of them all, until he meets Fallon, and then he proceeds to bully his way into her heart, and mine too.
I tried so hard to hate Remy, but there's this side of me that just immediately gave in and started rooting for him while also rooting for Fallon who is a seriously tough FMC who has a rough past. Together, they are unstoppable whether she wants to admit it or not.
As per my usual emotions, I definitely giggled some, smiled, definitely cried, developed a huge crush on Nix (one of Remy's best friends) and had my "oh wtf?" moments as I sat on the edge of my couch with my heart racing. I will say that coming down from that high made the ending that much better.
Firstly, I loved it! I can't wait to read more books from L.B. Martin! This book had some of my favorite tropes such as a college setting, bully, stepbrother, sports romance, and more. Most importantly, it delivered! It had drama, friendships, a bit of humor, lots of feels, and delicious spice.
Remy played his part perfectly. Jealous/possessive and when he wanted something, he got it! I loved seeing him fall for Fallon and I love that he fell first. I love that Fallon stood up for herself, despite her fears or insecurities. We get to see growth in both characters too. Honestly, I think they were good for each. The way their story started wasn't perfect, but it led them to their happy ending.
Bully + Taboo + Peppery Scenes = a whole lot of yes. Fallon didn’t have the best childhood and that created an armor that is thicker than giant redwood tree. Remington on the other hand acts like he’s gods greatest gift to earth and the head honcho of the university. Saying he doesn’t take it well when little miss emo smurfette doesn’t bow down to him, is an understatement. They are just so explosive together and I’m here for it. There were definitely some twists and turns I didn’t see coming but they helped suck me in to this story. This is definitely not a light and fluffy read but it definitely scratched an itch I didn’t realize I had, This is my first LB Martin story and I’m hooked. I can’t wait for the next book with a new set of characters.
What do you do when your greatest fear is his escape?
I love Fallon and the way she is fierce and stands up for herself. She had to overcome a lot and it left her closed off until she went to college and her roommates dragged her out of her comfort zone.
Remy loves the freedom he finds in the pool. After winning his race he gets confronted by his father. This leaves hum in a bad mood and when "emo smurfette" rand into him he is ready to tear her down. He gets way more than he ever expected.
I absolutely love some of the descriptions in this book. I'm also excited to see what happens with Grey and Nix because I have an idea and I do love some sharing.
"If love were an equation, it would be unsolvable"

Backstroke by LB Martin was a complete whirlwind! Fallon is such a lovable FMC—she's guarded because of her family trauma, and she’s not one to be pushed around easily. It makes her a relatable character with real depth. Remington, or Remy, is the quintessential campus god who’s used to getting what he wants. And when he decides he wants Fallon? She’s in deeper than she realizes.
What I loved most is that, despite Remy’s "bully" label, he’s actually one of the nicest MMCs I’ve come across in a book. Their dynamic is so addictive. If you're into a compelling, character-driven story with a swoon-worthy bad boy who’s secretly a softie(and a swiftie), Backstroke is a must-read!
I think this is my favorite book of the year. My first darker romance and I’m hooked! I was hooked from the first page. Fallon and Remy take you on this roller coaster ride. There were times when I was yelling out for Remy to stop being a jerk and just go for her. There were twists and turns that made me grip my kindle tighter not wanting to put it down. This book had everything I wanted. Dark, romance, enemies to lovers, slight stalking, characters you hate and ones you can’t wait to know more about.
I love a man who knows how to grovel, i love a man who is obsessed and very posessive. I love a man who knows all the right things to say at the right moments and who knows when to stop talking and take action. My love hate relationship with Remy, ugh. I can't explain it in any other way like the first half of the book, i hated him with a passion the feminist in me was screaming. But then i don't know when it changed but it did change, i started loving, his demanding ways, his posessiveness, his level of bullying. The way he speaks or sometimes even doesn't speak but just does. Maybe now that i come to think of it, i think it was from the moment the family dynamic changed, if you know, you know!
So I’m not really into the whole sports trope but this one grabbed my attention. This book just seemed different and it didn’t disappoint! The plot twists keep you going whattt tha fkkkk? And flipping page after page. It’s so hard to write a review and omit spoilers 🤫 there’s so much I want to say….
“College Girl Dies From Sexual Frustration.”
“I have uncovered the light within me. It can no longer be extinguished by you.”
⚠️As always remember your mental health matters! This book may contain subjects not suitable for everyone. Please check the trigger warnings/content warnings BEFORE reading
College with textbook definition of a bully romance. So much so that you know you hate the MMC. But by the end… more like 70% or so… I loved his crazy ass so much!
Our female main, Fallon - HAS A PAST that’s for dang sure! And she is so broken but tries so hard to not let it show. Bully campus king, Remington, is determined to squash her defiant attitude if it’s the last thing he does.
Then everything changes. They change each other in the best ways and in other ways, neither of them change a thing. And you know what? It works. We get a happy ending.
I really loved this and hope the little hint we get about the next book is going where I think it is. I think I’m going to love spending time at Frampton U.
ARC Review Backstroke is my first LB Martin book and I enjoyed her writing. It's a dark bully romance between the king of swim team/campus and a freshman that stands up to him. Fallon gets under Remington's skin and changes him. They both had an instant attraction but denied it. Fallon has had some serious trauma in her past and that all comes crashing down around her. Can Remington help her through it all?
