It’s a series that I love but carries the “duty” feeling with the start of a new book. But it is so worth it.
The Lord of Chaos is a great book and I’m not using the word lightly. It’s like the mountain peak, once you reach the top, all of the difficult times you had on the journey seem to be inconsequential. Instead you feel the rush (i mean especially with the last 150 pages) and look forward to the next journey (that you know you wont take anyway just yet).
To be honest, I was bored a lot reading this book. So much detail I can do without. So little action in most of the book. Women’s characterisation was getting on my nerves more and more. And then, it starts getting better, probably around 65%. And then, we have the last 150 pages. I was unable to put my kindle down. I couldn’t stop reading. I just needed to know what will happen next. It’s one of the things I love the most about reading. Being so enthralled in the story that little else matters. You care so much about the characters that you can’t not know what will become of them. There’s no choice but to turn the next page (and who cares about sleep? -I’ll regret this tomorrow morning). It’s one if the things I rarely ever feel anymore. But the 6th wheel of time book was definitely a strong instalment. While not my favorite, I can say I highly enjoyed reading it.
Don’t get me wrong, the flaws are still there and they disappoint (and withhold me from giving a 5 stars rating). But all in, I am looking forward to start the books I dread reading the most in this series (7.8.9.10)!...more

I couldn’t care about the book, its story or its characters. At all. Not in the slightest. Not one bit. It’s a very amateur novel for a publishing house like Harper Voyage. I didn’t want to read Godkiller but it was the pick of the month in the book club I’m in so I thought "just 300 pages so it is not a big deal". Unfortunately, it proved to be a real struggle to finish. The only interesting thing about it was that prologue.
It didn't manage to hold my attention, I had a difficult time reading it, and I couldn’t connect even remotely to the characters. My friends liked it at least. Unfortunately, I felt like I wasted my time. I know many disagree but I’m tired of being sorry when I don’t like a book. Or well, sorry in general. I rarely give 1 star ratings anymore always leaving the book some benefit of the doubt but I’m tired of doing that even. This book wasn’t my thing. It might be yours and if so great! But in all cases, I only recommend it if you want some basic fantasy. It is a waste though, the diversity and the inclusion were great. The MC had a disability + several LGBT characters....more

Yellowface has received a lot of mixed reviews. Reading it, I realized why. While I agree regarding several points, I still enjoyed it. The comedy part was solid most of the time (it won't make it LOL but you can still appreciate some lines). I didn't like the main character either but we aren't supposed to root for her anyway. Sure, she's not as complex as she could've been but I didn't mind.
I listened to the audiobook and while I admit reading some parts would've been repetitive and boring (especially when it comes to Twitter), listening to the story unfold wasn't a chore at all. Instead, I finished it in no time using every minute I can spare to know what was going to happen next. I was reading it with my friend and she reported the same thing about the book, though. She managed to finish it in a very short time. It is a pageturner for sure. Another plus for this book was that I got an insider's glimpse into the publishing world. This book reflected the new role of social media in any book's reception.
It's not the first stolen plot book I read but it was certainly the one I liked best. Except for that ending. It was terrible. Not the whole ending, just the hysteria part. It was too absurd and ridiculous. Kuang shouldn't have included it at all and instead, she should've tried to wrap up the story in a different way. It was anti-climactic and it didn't go well with the rest of the book.
The writing was solid and the story was very engaging so I decided to keep the 4 stars rating. Kuang is a talented writer for sure. I'm glad to see her venturing into new genres and I might reconsider and read Babel. I would recommend this book if you want to read a light contemporary tackling some of the challenges, accountability and issues in the publishing and writing world. ...more

I didn't know what to expect from this book except for the major spoiler I learned a couple of books before starting this one. Sure stuff happens but barely any progress takes place. My main issue was (view spoiler)[that we are back to the end of book 12, since Dresden was back, the whole ghost thing was absurd because there were barely any "limits" for the magic and Butcher was creating them as he went, there was no system he abided to but created exit/exemptions as he wrote. Sure, some interesting things were revealed but we didn't need a book for them. A friend of mine disagreed and said it was a needed break from all the action... but I read Changes months ago. MaybeHonestly, I don't know what to think about this book. While it's something I recognise as a good book, I expected to feel a lot more reading it. Maybe the fact that I was listening to the audiobook affected my emotional involvement with the characters? I don't think so because it was narrated well.
I'll just compare the good and the meh/bad part.
Pros: I honestly enjoyed the writing style. It sets the story about. I'm not a gamer but I certainly liked reading a book about game making. The story also started pretty well and was gripped by the audiobook, wanting to listen to it whenever I had some free time (the feeling slowly evaporated when I reached the second half). Marx is cool. Decent side characters.
Cons: No connection to the main characters, I didn't care about them. The plot lacked focus and direction. Some things were overdone. Many said that the book could've been shorter and while I agree, listening to the audiobook I didn't mind. Only when Sadie and Sam became over 30 did the book stop feeling like a YA with adult characters.
The book could've been better for sure, I still enjoyed it and I can see why it became popular. I would even recommend it to certain readers. I will keep an eye out for Zevin's other books and check her previously published ones because she is a talented writer....more

It started well enough for an audiobook but soon I lost track of the characters since the different PoVs are very irregular (at least in the listening version). But once I memorised the characters, I started to appreciate them more & their stories. Moreover, I liked how the author wrapped the final reveal and book. And she decided to get this one because it was unknown (slim chance I’d read it already) and had a good rating (although we all know a good rating starts from 4.2) but I was still grateful for the gesture, I mean books are very close to my heart & all that. I tried to read the High Mountain Court with an open mind. Yeah sure I am up to a fantasy + smut book! (And I truly don’t mind those if well written every once in a while.)
But seriously, this book sucked. Adding the extra star because it is not the book’s fault that it landed in my lap.
In short? ACOTAR + TOG + FBAA mush that went wrong (style i repeat what i read without understanding the assignment, I am being harsh but it’s been a while since I read an almost rip off book).
Here's why this book is not the best: - before we given begin, look at the title. HOW UNREATIVE is that? I mean we've had our fair share of ACOTAR copy cats but guys we are in 2022 and we should find better titles. - the book started ok enough until we had INSTA LOVE. Come one. As if that's not enough, we had to suffer MATES. *shakes head violently.* - the romance was cringe. I couldn't feel the attraction. Also Hale. What kind name is that. So meh... - the plotline is predictable and slow paced. the big reveal can be seen from early on if you've read the books I mentioned before. Again. Not creative. - the side characters were ok, not much to say about those. - Remy isn't anything special for an MC. She's not bad but nothing stands out about her.
This book would've been fun if it was 2015. However, today, the stakes are higher because there are so many books out there and so many ideas that have been executed already. There is nothing wrong with inspiration but one has to stay unique. This book sadly was anything but.
At the very least, I realised I am in a reading place slump and not a book slump. I finished 250 pages in a day while I am back in my hometown. I also didn’t spend the whole day at home. But I can’t read for the life of me over 100 pages a day in the place where i moved to around a year ago. So weird....more

I read two chapters and then, the next day, I finished it in one sitting AFTER finishing an 11 hour shift. I mean, I am not sure if the books I am reading now are just so addicting (and page turners) or if I am reading to avoid finishing the research side work that I need to be doing.
Regardless, yes, I agree this book is over the top and I saw one of the twists coming early on but it didn't affect my enjoyment. I still had to read the next chapter. And then part II happened and I had to continue. Later on, it was too late to stop even if it was almost 1 am and I had to wake up at 6:30.
So bottom line, read this book if you are looking for something you can't put down. No, it's not the best thriller. But it's a damn addicting. The characters aren't too bad. I did question many of their decisions but well, the fast pace makes up for it. I don't think this book needs a sequel, however. I think I will listen to the audiobook once it's available on Libby but it's not high up there on my TBR....more

I accidentally came across Tokyo Ever After> and when I read a bit about it, I decided to give it a shot. What drew me in was discovering Japan from the eyes of someone new to the culture. Unfortunately, it was instead a boring love story (as many reviews already mentioned) and I couldn't relate to Izumi at all. She's very mediocre for a main character. I might be too harsh but at the same time, I couldn't relate her (nor the teen me) in any way. She was true to herself, at least. I give her that....more

A first try to write a novel (and an unsuccessful one). How are we just ok with a love interest who will “claim” another person regardless of their consent? Someone who will conquer just for power? A MC who is supposed to be strong yet gets continuously mistreated? Even when people underestimate her and are proven wrong..
I was lured by the interesting premise and the first chapter was interesting. Until we got to meet Fallon and I was perplexed then. This is the beloved MC? I wanted to drop the book at 15% but I figured it would be unfair to rate it 1 star then. But now it’s well deserved.
