Straight up, I love the Mercy Thompson series.
I love the characters and I love the world that Briggs has created. This was non-stop from cover to cover and it felt smooth and slick.
My favourite part of all the Mercyverse books has always been Mercy, the werewolves and the pack politics. Stories about any of the packs has always been something I've enjoyed. More packs! More werewolves! More Bran! :D Mercy is a pro at navigating this world she grew up in but even she is learning new things now that she's mated and married to Adam, the Alpha of the Columbia Basin pack.
It's funny that I'm all about reading M/M books lately when I think that my first M/M couple was Warren and Kyle and they just set my love for the genre. Briggs excels at writing secondary characters in a way that you want them to be the MCs. I could read books about Warren and Kyle and I hug their short story close to my heart.
There is a lot of action going on here. Adam's pack in peril, Mercy is trying to find them and protect the remaining pack members. Stefan is still...not right and Bran is off doing whatever it is Bran does. The fae who have declared themselves a sovereign state after the events of Fair Game. Allies are shifting in the supernatural world and the mundane government agencies are struggling to keep up with all the changes.
I worry for Mercy. I worry that she's so vulnerable but even despite that she's so gutsy and brave. I admire her so much for being able to do what she feels is the right thing even when that puts her in danger. Being a coyote walker she is so clever and even more so brings different perspectives and attitudes to problems/solutions and to the pack. I love the changes that she brings.
There is some fantastic Mercy and Adam interaction here. Their relationship is just getting richer and richer with every book. I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes next, there are a lot of questions still out there and so many ways the world can change. I loved this and can't wait for Mercy #8: Night Broken out next year to see where Briggs takes us next. ...more
