I have been lied to about the Suffrage movement, Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton.
I think it’s pretty unsettling that words written in the late I have been lied to about the Suffrage movement, Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton.
I think it’s pretty unsettling that words written in the late 70’s/ early 80’s ring true today and I’m left to wonder if we as a society learned anything in the almost forty years when the book was written.
This book is a lesson in the history in the fight to stop sexual violence and supporting reproductive rights and gender equality for women of color and the racism perpetrated at the hands of middle class white women. If you call yourself a feminist and a fighter for women’s rights, shouldn’t that include all women regardless of race and class?
It reminds me of the feminist movement today. White feminists call for attention to issues concerning woman today - rape, harassment, misogyny (#metoo #blacklivesmatter #timesup) but when their voices are truly needed, they are conspicuously absent.

How was it allowed to get as far gone as it did?
Elizabeth Holmes was this Stanford University dropout who became Silicon Valley’s wunderkind at 19 for developing a mechanical process that was able to send out results of blood tests faster than a traditional lab using a single drop of blood. Walgreens was interested. Safeway was interested. The U.S. military was interested. Big names with deep pockets invested in the company because they believed in what she was selling. Elizabeth Holmes became a billionaire after a few years. But there was just one problem: it didn’t work.
When employees questioned the methods used to obtain results to show investors and other interested parties, they were intimidated, shunned, demoted or fired and threatened with litigation if they publicly spoke of the project. But one former employee did, and that became the Wall Street Journal story that began the fall of Theranos.
I believe if Elizabeth Holmes was a man, she wouldn’t have gotten away with what she did. She was a blonde with big blue eyes and an affable personality. Everyone fell in love with her and had no problem emptying their pockets to find a project that didn’t have any tangible evidence that it worked. And now she and her second in command are charged with fraud and have to pay back all those people.
Moral of the story: don’t let your mouth cash checks your behind can’t cash. ...more
