When they find alien wolf DNA and giant paw prints, the team thinks they've found a hybrid wolf/dog, but it's much more innocent and sinister at the same time and Anna is badly shaken by the whole experience.
The story line is good, but Barr has Anna revert to her extremely foul mouth in this one. The f bomb is dropped regularly and unnecessarily. I love the National Parks settings that Barr uses in this series, but I really HATE the foul language in the books. I'd hoped that Anna's marriage to Episcopal priest Paul would continue to clean up the language, but this one is a real disappointment - hence the 2 stars....more

Anna's nearly killed at a hunting blind, but Randy "saves" her and has supposedly turned over a new leaf. All is not as it appears, but Anna does solve the crime AND get the man - Paul's long estranged wife FINALLY agrees to a divorce freeing him up to propose to Anna.
Anna's language is MUCH better in the south!...more

Strange thinTo escape Paul's proposal, Anna takes a temporary assignment as supervisory ranger at Dry Tortugas National Park - 70 miles off Key West. Strange things have been happening and Anna soon realizes the previous supervisor was also being drugged instead of truly being crazy. This is a different take for Barr because she entwines a historical story of Anna's great aunt whose husband was the commander during the Civil War with the current story. The two stories finally converge at the end, but the historical story is better than the modern....more

Her first clue that all is not right is when her own ranger gives her false directions on how to get there. Exciting - nails a lot of the Southern issues and atmosphere....more

Her ex-flame, FBI agent Frederick Stanton, has also arrived, so Anna's staying with a friend on Ellis Island - just before July 4th. This is an interesting take on Ellis Island. Molly and Frederick finally become engaged. It's a good story with cleaner language - hurray!...more

Definitely scary in parts with less vulgar language than her early books....more

Except for turtle patron, things have been pretty dull until the crash of a drug interdiction plane. As usual, Anna moves into the thick of the action as she solves the crime.
Although the language is much better than some of her books, the reason for the killing is weak and the explanation is rushed at the end. Description of the park is well done as usual, but sub-par on the mystery....more

Lots of language - less about Lassen, but lots of interesting info on fighting wildfires and corruption in the Park Service....more

Anna Pigeon is now working in Isle Royale National Park in Michigan where she discovers the body of a local dive boat captain. She's drawn into the investigation, even when her own life is at risk. There's great detail on the National Park Service and this particular park, but beware of the language - she drops a LOT of f--- bombs and various sexual relationships are included. It's a good story with an ending I didn't expect, but NOT squeaky clean by any measure.
