After becoming a wife and mother Kate Moore was a loner picked up by the CIA fresh out of college to work as an operative primarily in South America. After becoming a wife and mother of two boys and having them threatened by her work, she becomes a desk jockey and finally gives it up to move to Europe with her computer geek husband. But old habits die hard, and Kate continues to sniff out intrigue. She tries to make herself into the perfect Expat wife and mother, but when another American couple inserts themselves into her life, she begins to wonder what’s really happening. Chapters alternate between a one day time line and scenes from earlier times to explain what’s happening on that day.
This has been highly reviewed as a “meticulously plotted, psychologically complex spy thriller”. It is all of those things, but I did NOT find it a compelling read – took me nearly 3 months to get through! In the end it was just confusing – it took me ¾ of the way through the book to figure out that the majority of the book was in support of the 2 page chapters with time headers chronicling the events of the one day. Very confusing!...more

Alex travels from Australia to Bangkok to Indonesia to Australia following the trail and solves problems for both the British and Australians along the way.
Although another highly unlikely situation, Horowitz makes it believable... and Alex is smart....more

After being shot by Scorpia agents coming out of the Mi6 offices, Alex is grateful to be alive. While recuperating, he witnesses a murder and is kidnapped - instead of the boy in the room next door, Paul Drevin. He dramatically escapes the kidnappers, and Paul's super-rich Russian father Nikolei invites Alex on vacation with them to show his appreciation. They head back to the Caribbean for the launch of the next phase of Ark Angel - a space hotel. Alex rescues the world again, but this is less believable than the other stories, but still good fun....more

He survives some brutal training, murderous ATV drivers, a Portuguese man-o-war jellyfish, and other attempts on his life before resolving this story.
Alex is a bright teen who has been taught unusual skills by his uncle. A bit of a loner who can think on his feet and doesn’t accept all that’s told him.
Horowitz has done an excellent job giving Alex typical teen insecurities and problems while also making him a likeable hero. The plot is not totally plausible, but it doesn’t really matter because you want Alex to succeed. ...more
