Authors need to learn that they can't write a novella the same way they write a big ass book. OthWarning: third person POV
DNF past half so I'm rating.
Authors need to learn that they can't write a novella the same way they write a big ass book. Otherwise, we have pages and pages of introduction and then the whole book happens in 10%.
I left this book at it's long introduction. Don't have time or patience.
AFTER I had already wrote this review, I was made aware that this book ends in a cliffhanger and continues for 2 more books. That explains the loooooong intro but it causes a new problem: why isn't that in the blurb? I picked this up because it was a quick read, I wasn't at all committed to read two more books!...more

The idea for this plot is awesome! It could've been a very good fantasy book if decently written and developed.
I know the author can write because some parts (the smexy and some emotions) are actually well written.
But the remainder made me wonder if this book wasn't destined to pre-teens or even children. It confused me, because there is some smut and it's not really a children thing... The writing is so basic and infantile that it left my mouth hanging....more

The MMC is a total asshole who thinks he's God's gift for women. Literally. Misogynistic to the highest level - a woman is only worth her holes. The FMC is a cry baby but very in line with her backstory. She’s decently construed. The writing style is surprisingly good.
If this book was pure smut, I’d understand the ridiculous plot. But it has aspirations to be more than that and actually delivers a story. But there are so many problems with that story and ridiculousness that it was like watching an accident happen. Even the majority of the smut scenes were cringy. Maybe one or two were kinda hot. ...more

I don't expect much from books that are pure smut, but this one was bad. Soooo bad. The author has prejudice and preconceived ideas about dom/sub relationship and didn't even bother to read about it. I did read about it and I am no expert, but this was insulting to that lifestyle. No focus on trust, just on the dom's wishes and that made the smut not hot.
It was ridiculously repetitive. Like 7 pages of inner monologue saying the exact same thing. The writing was amateurish. Didn't have a thing from the cowboy world. It could have been set in a resort in the Bahamas.
I liked the FMC though, especially after the 50% mark. And that's the only reason this isn't a 1 star review....more

I wish authors would warn us when a book is in third person POV. But both?!? No warning would be enough.
Also, I don't feel that the plot is that promising.
I really need to stop getting books on free kindle day... with the random exception, they're all awful....more

Do you know why we love the jealous alpha males in books? Because they burn the world down for us, they kill when they're jealous or we're mistreated, but it's NEVER, never, the FMC's fault.
Do you know why we hate jealous and abusive people in real life? Because they tend to blame it all on us. it's ALWAYS our fault and sometimes they lash out and hurt us. They're called ABUSERS.
This is book about an abuser. About someone who likes to kick people (the FMC) when she's down and then apologize and do it again. And narcissistic too.. all the abuse, everything he does wrong is her fault and SHE must forgive because HE can't take it for her not too.
Since the very first page until the last this was present. He treated her like a whore, she sucked him off. He called her out for it and she opened her legs. I'm not talking about when she needed to because of the contract.
Lastly, he blackmailed her into giving him her virginity. (...more

Because here, it's not a narration, it's storytelling and transmitting of feelings done brilliantly. This book is very character and atmosphere driven. It's brilliant how the author explores the minds of the six friends, especially Poe, Auden and St. Sebastian. Their mysteries, their (sometimes yet unknown) pasts, their struggles, all are felt. I can't explain how, but through Poe's inner monologue we are show a lot, not told.
I also loved that the author included 2 or 3 chapters with a third person POV showing what each of the other 5 were doing, feeling and thinking. It was great to add to the plot and to the brilliant atmosphere creation.
The blurb for this book is terrible and incorrect in some aspects: Poe comes to Thornchapel because she has, for many years, been dreaming of it and of the 5 other kids with whom she spent a summer there years ago. And to find about her mother who disappeared. And because she was offered a librarian position to catalogue the vast library. She hopes to see Auden, whom she married, along with St. Sebastian, when they were 7-10 (can't remember). There she finds not only these two, but also the remaining group - some have a complicated relationship with this house and none has forgotten that summer.

DNF I just can't. It's not so much the darkness - it is DARK and the first 20% will gut you with explicit rape scene (some strangers raped her) and the DNF I just can't. It's not so much the darkness - it is DARK and the first 20% will gut you with explicit rape scene (some strangers raped her) and the later abuse from a parent. Btw, it is inadmissible that a book that starts with a very graphic description of a very very horrible rape of a 16 year old does not have the trigger warnings in the first pages!!!!
But for me, it's the whole plot and especially the characters. It is brilliantly well written, so I feel everything... more. The good and the bad. And the bad here is not my style. Not at all! Example: 1) the rape scene was unnecessary (could have been FTB) and unnecessarily gruesome. That's the kind of darkness I can't get behind. 2) The subsequent plot and all that the author put her through.
This may be a good book for some people, this is just my opinion and how I felt. I can't explain it further without spoiling everything... but THIS review and the spoiler in its comments may help. I'm just not in the mood for super dark and graphic psychologic thrillers.
An extra star for the amazing writing. I will be reading other books from this author for sure....more
