She is roughly jostled by a woman in a big hurry and Seedy, her little 3 legged dog, is straining at the leash to get at what looks like a man’s tie in a bush. Her police friend Riley informs her that the dead man is a banker and his body must have been placed on the bench by someone during the night.
Jingles is an older man that has been washing the windows of all the shops on Main Street for years. Today a younger man is taking his place and tells Abby that Jingles has left town for a while. It seems that Jingles had a run in with the deceased and was the last person to see the dead banker alive. As soon as Jingles gets back to town he is arrested as a person of interest. All of the merchants in New Chapel have banded together and want to hire Abby and Marco to find the real killer. Abby has too much on her plate, as her business is booming; she is short an employee; and her mother is driving her nuts. DEMISE IN DENIM
Duffy Brown
Berkley Prime Crime April 2015
Regan Summerside is very ambivalent toward Attorney Walker Boone. Her thoughts range from doing evil things to him because he represented her ex in their divorce and really took the lady for all she had. Lately, however, those thoughts are strictly prurient, and she is desperately trying to clear his name for killing a man. Walker was last seen zooming off on Regan’s pink moped after he had given her a kiss-to-die-for and the keys to his classic cherry red Chevy convertible.
The deceased, Conway Adkins, has so many enemies it would be difficult for the police to pick one in particular. Unfortunately, Boone’s gun did the man in, and the lawyer was also standing over the body that was in a claw foot bathtub. However, one strong argument in Boone’s favor, is Conway left Boone a very valuable piece of property; of course that could also be a viable reason to kill the man who was also Boone’s father that had abandoned him as a child.
DEMISE IN DENIM brings back all of the residents that have lived in this part of Savannah from the beginning (see, read, and enjoy ICED CHIFFON), and they are all just as clever and unconventional as ever. Regan’s luck goes from bad to pitiful starting with a bully of a detective that is out to get her, to some of her best customers trying to put her out of business. And, Boone is going to probably kill her when he surfaces because she hasn’t taken very good care of his pride and joy – his classic Chevy. The punishment won’t start immediately, though, because there’s a beginning to what could be a beautiful romance.
Duffy Brown has penned a delightful and chaotic mystery that is pure entertainment. It’s possible you will have a smile on your face all the way to the very bombshell of an ending.
Maisie will soon be leaving India. She has helped set up a school in Bombay, and found a killer. She has been absent from London for about six months resting and soul searching, and it is time to return home and marry Viscount James Compton. The wedding takes place in August at St. Joseph’s Church in Chelstone. James and Maisie leave immediately for Canada. They have an apartment in Toronto, but also have a house in northern Ontario near James’ work as an aviator. James and Maisie have been married for six months in May of 1935 when Maisie writes her best friend, Priscilla Partridge, that she is pregnant. However, in November James is killed in a flying accident, and Maisie loses their unborn daughter. She cannot bear to return to England and she more or less disappears to lick her wounds.
Bombay, January 1937
Maisie wires her father and his wife that she will be sailing home. In March she decides to disembark her ship in Gibraltar, and the ship’s captain cannot convince her of the danger she is walking into with a civil war looming a short distance away in Spain. It doesn’t take long for Maisie to get involved in underground activities, and solving a murder. By staying in Gibraltar, Maisie is risking life and limb. World War II is looming, and the war clouds are building. But, Maisie has found a cause that fills the empty places in her heart and soul, and she is able to return home.
A DANGEROUS PLACE is poignant and beautiful, and might be the most remarkable entry to this excellent series. Jacqueline Winspear delivers a compulsive page-turner that captures the essence of pre-war. Ms. Winspear’s magnificently developed characters, intense pacing, and the enigmatic story threads captured this reader’s attention and held it spellbound from the beginning of this story to its ending.
After twelve years in the army Captain Millanie McAllen is now a civilian and returning to her hometown of HONE TRUE HEART
Jodi Thomas Berkley April 2015
After twelve years in the army Captain Millanie McAllen is now a civilian and returning to her hometown of Harmony, Texas for some rest and rehabilitation. Millanie suffered a career ending leg wound, and at the present she has no immediate plans for the rest of her life. Arriving late at night in Amarillo, the car rental agency at the airport has already closed and Millanie accepts a ride to Harmony with a man also waiting on his bags at the luggage carousel. Being a prudent woman, Mellanie sizes him up before accepting a ride. Andrew “Drew” Cunningham lives in Twisted Creek where he has been hiding from the public for five years. He tells Millanie that he is returning from Chicago where he was visiting his mother; he also tells her his younger sister, Kare Cunningham, is twenty-four, lives in Harmony, and is a fortune teller. When Drew reaches Harmony he assumes that the woman he has been thinking of as Sleeping Beauty for the past couple of hours will be staying at Martha Q. Patterson’s Winter’s Inn, and that is where he takes her.
Mellanie isn’t in Harmony on a whim, but an assignment. Someone in her hometown is smuggling drugs and laundering money, and she will be contacted by another agent that has been in town a while longer. Lo and behold if that doesn’t turn out to be Kare, Drew’s fortune telling younger sister.
Johnny Wheeler has been arrested for burying his soon to be ex-wife. While he is in jail, Kare visits him and tells him he has no need to worry. The ex-wife isn’t even dead; she just ran off with another man.
Beau Yates is now one of Nashville’s best, and is in town because his father is dying. Beau really has no love for the man that abused him physically and threw him out, but he would like to come home for a few days. While he is in town he gets reacquainted with his teen-age fantasy girl whom he calls Trouble. He stays in Harmony longer that he planned on.
Jodi Thomas is an amazing talent with a flair for creating fully realized characters, which are fluent in humorous and believable dialogue; and Ms. Thomas’s storylines are well-paced and fascinating. ONE TRUE HEART balances well established characters to this series and newcomers to Harmony, and comes up with a picture perfect ensemble that shares love, merriment, passion and compassion. ONE TRUE HEART is sure to be another best-seller for Ms. Thomas

This woman cleans houses during the day and is a mortician/beautician at night at the House of Eternal Slumber in Savannah. Since Mercedes is on probation she calls attorney Walker Boone instead of the police when she discovers the body, seeing as how she’s not supposed to be around dead bodies unless they are on her table at the mortuary. Mercedes is convinced that the next customer on her house-cleaning-waiting-list killed Conway so they could move up. Reagan Summerside, owner of the Prissy Fox, an upscale consignment shop, shows up at Conway’s house to measure some furniture that he wants to sell on consignment through her shop. When the cops arrive, Walker, Mercedes, and Reagan are face to face with the unfriendly visage of Detective Aldeen Ross and two uniformed policemen. Walker has never liked Adkins, so that puts the attorney on Ross’ suspect list; however, Ross takes Mercedes to the station to get her statement. Walker will try to get Mercedes exonerated because she also cleans his house. His investigation and interviews prove very interesting. It seems Conway had a lot of enemies and most of them will benefit from his death. It also seems that new information brought to light about Walker and the victim can be used as a great argument that Walker is the killer.
Walker and Regan also share a history; two years ago Walker represented Regan’s ex-husband in their divorce that left Regan with nothing but a falling down Victorian house and a lot of bills. Regan wants the consignment money so she can buy a car. Her mode of transportation is a pink moped she has named Princess.
DEAD MAN WALKER is the prequel to Duffy Brown’s next Consignment Shop Mystery. The wonderful supporting characters especially Reagan’s Aunt Kiki, martini drinking wife of Dr. “Putter” Vanderpool; and Mercedes, friend and fellow trouble maker, make their contributions to this entertaining romp. DEAD MAN WALKER is a laugh-out-loud and clever keep-you-guessing mystery, which will just whet your appetite for DEMISE IN DENIM, the next installment of this series. Duffy Brown is truly in top form here. Regan and Walker are getting closer with every story, and they get real close in this one.
The honeymoon is over and Abby and Marco want to buy a house and start putting down some roots. The r A ROOT AWAKENING
Kate Collins
Obsidian February 2015
The honeymoon is over and Abby and Marco want to buy a house and start putting down some roots. The real estate agent they are working with shows them a “fixer upper”, and Abby refuses to go inside, because if the inside looks as bad as the outside, it should be a “tear-downer”. Some repairs are being made, though, as several construction workers are onsite -- some on the roof and others painting. The ladder to the roof begins to fall taking a painter named Sergio all the way to the ground. The accident happens so fast that no one knows what happened. The lady of the house and her two children, Bud about ten, and Daisy, about six, come outside. Abby is holding little Seedy, their rescue dog, and Daisy is staring at the two of them with a really sad look on her face. After the ambulance takes the painter away, the man of the house arrives home and won’t let Abby and Marco inside the house; they are asked to come back in the morning. When the realtor and the Salvare’s return, the occupants of the house have vacated, taking all their belongings with them.
Rosa Maria, Sergio’s wife, refuses to believe this was an accident, and when Detective Riley says there is no evidence of foul play, she hires Marco. Rosa is a “firecracker” and much younger than Sergio, but her love and devotion to him is real. She volunteers to help Abby out two hours a day between her other jobs to help pay Marco’s fee, and she is very talented in flower arranging. Marco finds Sergio was not liked by the other workers, leaving several prime suspects on the table. Abby is trying to track down the mysterious “Jones” family that was renting the house, and uncovers some surprising and sinister information about Mr. and Mrs. Jones.
A ROOT OF AWAKENING is another delightful happening with one of our favorite mystery solving duos. This is Kate Collins’s fifteenth whodunit in this series, and her storylines are still as fresh, clever and entertaining as the first one. Ms. Collins’s incredible returning characters of family, friends, and co-workers are wonderfully developed and add zing to each and every tale. Jillian’s baby should be born any minute now. Abby and Marco are perfect together and little “Seedy” knows she is one lucky and loved dog. A ROOT OF AWAKENING is easy reading, reader friendly, and a super way to spend some time with old friends.
The Whole Enchilada: A Novel of Suspense (Goldy Schulz) By Diane Mott Davidson
William Morrow September 2013
Nearly twenty years ago Goldy Schultz was just getting her catering company started when she made a friend of Holly Ingleby, who was just getting her art business going. Goldy’s son Arch, and Holly’s son Drew were born on the same day, and even though Goldy and Holly haven’t kept up with each other as closely as before, their sons have been lifelong friends.
The moms are giving their guys a joint birthday party and inviting school friends, parents, and close friends. Drew is leaving the next day to visit his aunt in Alaska, so he and Holly leave the party early. However, before they can make it to their car Holly collapses and expires before the ambulance arrives. There are all kinds of wild speculation about her death, but the real reason is that Holly had a reaction to something she ate. In just a few hours Goldy discerns that Holly is nearly in bankruptcy and is evidently blackmailing someone.
Drew’s life is even in danger as a trap had been set for him to open an envelope with money for his trip that would have caused a deliberate and potentially fatal accident. Goldy was seriously injured trying to reach the envelope. Holly had a lot of people upset with her, including her ex-husband and her art mentor.
Diane Mott Davidson throws many, many motives and clues into solving this mystery, and it really should be obvious to everyone who the guilty party is. It is a lot of fun to be back on a case with Goldy and Friends especially her BFF Marla, husband Tom, son Arch, and Goldy’s vegetarian specialist Julian Teller. Ms. Davidson is my nominee for “Queen of the gourmet Cozy Mystery”. This author is also known for her wonderful surprise endings and believe me – this one has a doozy! THE WHOLE ENCHILADA is great fun with wonderful characters, a clever plot, and a crisp intriguing narrative.
Evie Bloomfield has arrived on Mackinac Island, Michigan with nine gallons of beach bab GEARED FOR THE GRAVE Duffy Brown
Berkley Prime Crime December 2014
Evie Bloomfield has arrived on Mackinac Island, Michigan with nine gallons of beach baby-blue paint to discover that there are no motorized vehicles allowed and she will have to get the paint from the ferry dock to Rudy’s Rides the best way she can. Evie works for Rudy’s daughter Abigail in Chicago; a neighbor of Rudy called Abigail to tell her that Rudy has had an accident and needs help sprucing up his bicycle shop or the business will be closed by the town council. Abigail can’t get away from her business right now, and Evie, hoping to get some brownie points, volunteered her services. Right about now Evie is regretting her impulsiveness.
Rudy doesn’t seem too concerned about much of anything except the euchre tournament at the Stang, a local bar. He leaves his shop in Evie’s care and takes off with his friend Ed. Evie answers a call to deliver two bikes, and a local character, Irish Donna helps her. The Irish woman is clicking her tongue all the way and talking about the black clouds surrounding Evie.
Sure enough, on the way back to Rudy’s Rides in Irish Donna’s horse cart, the two women discover the body of Bunny, a sixty-some trouble making biddy who thinks she owns the island. Bunny’s body has been pushed off the road into some bushes. However, her bike’s brake line must have been cut at her house, since Bunny was riding her bike when she left Rudy’s earlier. Acting police Chief Nate Sutter is called to the scene and several townspeople come with him. Labor Day draws huge crowds of “fudgies” and if a murder is reported the tourists might not show up. Nate is badgered into agreeing to put Bunny in cold storage in the grocery store’s large freezer during the holiday surge. The natives refer to tourists as “fudgies” since most come to sample that sweet at one of the umpteen shops on Mackinac.
Rudy is the prime suspect in what is referred to as “the Bunny Festival” since that woman had just promised that she would see that his business was closed soon. But, Bunny kept over half the residents irritated with her most of the time. Evie just cannot believe that Rudy, who is on crutches, could make his way up this steep slope, move the body, and hobble back down again.
GEARED FOR THE GRAVE is the whimsical and extremely clever opening story for Duffy Brown’s new series, “a cycle path mystery”. The characters are smartly defined; the dialogue is intelligent and witty; shrewd story threads weave in and out of the tale. And, Ms. Brown has found the perfect locale to set her wonderful whodunits.
The Diva Runs Out of Thyme (A Domestic Diva Mystery) By Krista Davis Berkley Prime Crime October 2008
“A Domestic Diva Mystery” – Book One
A quick trip to the grocery store lands DC area culinary, celebrity columnist, Sophie Winston, in jail for first-degree murder. Sophie finds the body of a man who harassed her about taking a homeless kitten just as she was going into the store. When she comes out, the poor little kitty is wandering around near a dumpster. The corpse is later identified as a private investigator named Otis Pulchinski, and he had pictures of Sophie in his car. Who could have hired someone to follow her? And, why?
Sophie and Natasha Smith have been competitors since grade school, with Natasha usually coming out the winner. Sophie’s ex-husband Mars is engaged to Natasha, and please be advised that Natasha did not steal Mars from Sophie, as the couple called it quits over two years ago. Natasha is considered the authority ala Martha Stewart on all things domestic in the Washington, DC area. Sophie is also a domestic diva, but more low-key and realistic in matters of decorating and recipes ala Heloise. It is Thanksgiving time, and Sophie, Natasha, and three other contestants are vying for the distinction of having the best turkey dressing. Someone has sabotaged all of the cooks by mislabeling their condiments and spices. And guess what? Billionaire Simon Greer, the sponsor of this cook-off, is found dead in a room near the bake-off display. And just who finds the body? Duh…Sophie. Detective “Wolf” Fleishmann makes Sophie his number one person-of-interest in both murders and maybe in his future…..
This opening series of domestic diva mysteries is fantastic, with rich, well-drawn characters, especially Sophie’s ex-mother-in-law, June, who has conversations with her sister’s ghost. The conflict between Sophie and Natasha is amusing, and the advice at the beginning of each chapter from one of our two divas is clever and informative. Sophie is a magnet for trouble, and whether she likes it or not, Detective Fleishmann is going to be a permanent fixture in her life, be it arresting her or kissing her. Recipes, clues, outstanding interaction between characters, and a killer you would never suspect make this a great read.

Ellie has always made pies for any and every reason – when she is sad, happy, uncertain, and so on. Her pies seem to make everything better, and not just for her. Therefore, the five LeFaye sisters are willing to back Ellie in a pie shop, and have a building picked out that will be perfect for the business. One problem, Ellie’s nemesis since the cradle, Loralyn Gaynor, wants the same building for another nail salon. When Loralyn loses the bidding war, she more or less threatens Ellie that she will be run out of town. So, is it just a coincidence that Ellie’s rolling pin is found near the dead body of Loralyn’s fiancee?
Pies and Prejudice is a truly entertaining cozy mystery wherein magical and unexplained happenings are the norm. Ellie has two suitors, her high school sweetheart Hugh Dylan, and veterinarian Dr. Knox Chandler. Ellery Adams has a talent for developing likeable and unlikeable characters, and intelligent dialogue. Plot lines and narratives are crisp and tight. This is a delicious way to while away a few hours, and then maybe whip up one or two of the scrumptious recipes included.
The Diva Frosts a Cupcake (A Domestic Diva Mystery) By Krista Davis Berkley Prime Crime June 2013
Sophie Winston is helping her BFF Nina with a fundraising event for animal shelters. The event is a black-tie dinner serving an eight course dinner consisting of cupcakes made by local bakeries. For example the appetizer is Avocado and Black Bean, Cupcake and the Desserts are Salted Caramel Cupcake and a Chocolate Coconut Cupcake. There are also dishes especially for animals.
Sugar Baby Cupcakes is owned by Renee and Joy, and a young woman named Muffin helps them out. However, this morning everyone on the square is talking about the partnership of Renee and Joy breaking up and Joy has opened another bakery right across the street named Sugar Mama Cupcakes. No one knows what caused the rift. Muffin could probably shed some light on this, but she’s been murdered in Renee’s bakery.
Sophie is publicly accosted and humiliated by Clarissa Osbourne who is telling everyone that Sophie is having an affair with Spenser Osbourne, Clarissa’s husband. And, Sophie’s friend since high school, Humphrey, thinks he is love with Renee, but is being chased by one of his colleagues. Oh, and I mustn’t leave out the dog that Spenser wants to adopt that gets “dognapped” and has everyone looking for him.
THE DIVA FROSTS A CUPCAKE is rollicking good fun, and Krista Davis adds a delicious new man in Sophie’s life – divorced attorney Alex German, nephew of General Euclid German. This doesn’t sit well with Sophie’s ex, Mars, who still hasn’t married Natasha. The well-defined characters, all of whom I consider my personal friends and frenimies, plus the witty story lines, makes this another winning Diva outing that is cooked to perfection. Of course bonus recipes are included, along with some for your fur-babies.

Deadly Gamble Linda Lael Miller
HQN November 2006
Linda Lael Miller brings ghosts to the table of this reading delight. When Mojo Sheepshanks was five years old she was a witness to her parent’s murders. – then she was known as Mary Jo . The child was found hiding in a clothes dryer, drenched in blood. Later, her half-brother, Geoff, confessed to the killings and was sent to Juvenile Detention.
Mojo was raised by a neighbor, Lillian, who took the child and went underground, after changing both of their names. They were soon joined by a runaway, Greer, and the daughter of Lillian’s lover, Jolie. These three women are true sisters of the heart.
Mojo had a brief marriage to Nick, a man who started cheating on her immediately. After their divorce, he died. His ghost is now haunting her and begging for forgiveness, so that his soul can leave the “train station”. She doesn’t want to forgive him, so he just keeps hanging around. She has an on-again, off-again relationship with Tucker, an undercover cop that she’s crazy about, but he is still hung up on his recently divorced wife. Someone is trying to kill Mojo, and she needs Tucker’s help to stay alive.
This kick-off to Ms. Miller’s new trilogy is outstanding. Mojo starts her own private investigation business because Nick said she will be getting customers who have been murdered and still hanging around the train station. Deadly Gamble has it all – love and laughter, romance, mystery, suspense and a superb cast of characters.

The pace is even and steady, the people are three dimensional, and Ms. Cahoon’s narrative is voiced loudly and proudly.
