Complete Me: A Novel By J. Kenner Bantam August 2013
Nikki Fairchild has been in Munich with her soul mate, billionaire Damien Start, for three weeks while he is awaiting trial for murder. Why the authorities are just now charging Damien for an accidental death that occurred when he was fourteen years old is not clear. The victim was Damien’s tennis coach, Merle Richter, who had sexually molested the young tennis prodigy for five years. Damien does not want this information to be his defense, as he does not want the world to know of his horrible, sordid secret. Nikki’s sole purpose in life for the time being is to protect Damien from himself and to keep all outsiders at bay. Nikki and Damien have an obsessive sexual relationship, which knows no boundaries and is a panacea for everything.
Nikki has secrets of her own but none she has kept from Damien. Damien has a sixth sense about when Nikki needs him, and in the months they have been together he is always there to chase away her demons.
When Damien’s problems in Germany are resolved, the couple returns home to Los Angeles to kick off new beginnings. However, Nikki has acquired a stalker and it will take all of Damien’s resources to keep his lover safe.
Julie Kenner has done quite well with this romantic noir trilogy. Ms. Kenner’s talent for pacing, characterization, dialogue, and narrative is always brilliant, no matter the genre. While erotica is not a category this reviewer favors, the excellence of the author’s work is recognized and appreciated. There are a lot of mysterious happenings in this tale, and these are tantalizingly addressed. Julie Kenner is a mistress of all she purveys!
Straddling the Line (A Play-by-Play Novel) By Jaci Burton Berrkley Sensation July 2014
Coach Bill Briscoe and his wife, Ginger, were college sports dorm parents in Oklahoma. Their daughter, Haven, was the apple of her father’s eye, and shared his love of all things sport. Haven was also extremely smart, and tutored several of the athletes, including Trevor Shay, a gifted competitor in two sports. Needless to say Trev was quite the ladies’ man, and Haven was a brainiac with a large crush on him. It wouldn’t have mattered even if Trev was aware of her feelings; she was the coach’s daughter and hands off! Plus, Bill and Ginger were like substitute parents to Trev, making Haven his “kinda” sister.
The years have passed and Haven is having problems getting over her father’s death about a year or so back. She has a primo job as a network sports journalist, but her ennui has put that job in danger. When Haven is called into her boss’s office expecting to be fired, she gets the surprise of her life. It seems that Trevor Shay, a dual professional athlete that excels in both major league baseball and football is finally ready to give an in-depth interview on his personal and professional life, and has insisted that Haven Briscoe do the project.
Working so closely together in St. Louis, where he finishes up the baseball season, to his home in Florida when he joins the football team, brings their sexual fantasies to a boiling point and they begin a very erotic no-strings-attached relationship. Trev is harboring a hurtful secret that he feels would destroy any feelings Haven might truly have for him.
Jaci Burton has earned the right to be called a very “hot” property, and she definitely has a skill writing sensuous stories. Fans of Burton should be aware that Straddling the Line crosses over from very sensuous to very explicit erotic sexual adventures, including voyeuristic self-gratification situations. If the reader enjoys the erotic genre, they will thoroughly enjoy this well written, hot and juicy, tale.
