Since this is such a short story, I'm not giving away any spoilers. And for a novella and an Amazon freebie, this story is actually quite intriguing and dark and also just a great build up for the full lenght story. It's not your typical romance book, it's more of a K. Webster type of a book. So you know that you're in for a dark and f*** up ride. Not that I mind. I just wish the second book was out already. It's said to be released in 2018, so there's still hope we'll get it this year. ...more

I first saw this book when a friend reviewed it and since it was free at the time on Amazon, I thought I'd give it a try. Thank God I did. This is an amazing story and I'm glad I read it.
People these days were afraid if they held out a hand, it’d get bitten off. And most of the time, it did. Single women in this day and age were hunted like big game. Women my age were targets for slavers, whorehouses, labor camps, baby factories. The cruelty of the world knew no bounds. I could only dream of a world I’d read about in secret –a world where freedom and choice were important and protected.
The world we know is gone and almost completely forgotten. It's the world Bailey has to fight for survival every day. Now even more than when she was younger. She made some wrong choices that cost her dearly and one of them was falling for her psychopathic ex, that is now following her every step and won't rest until he finds and ends her. Only problem, her ex isn't the only one who wants to see her bleed. Nope, the world really isn't as we know it. Supernatural creatures, that were long hidden from out eyes, now roam the Earth. And just as luck would have it, Bailey's new stalker is a djinn. Thankfully she meets Erick, an old viking vampire, or better said, he finds her. He says he wants to help her and given her situation she has no choice but to trust him to speak the truth.
“It’s been a rough couple of days.” “Join the club. Mine went from shitty to nuclear,”... ...I had run from one lunatic straight into another.
I liked Bailey's character. She's been through a lot. For years she's been on the run from her ex and that abused her on the daily basis. She almost lost trust in humanity, especially men, but thankfully Erick helps her to overcome her past and fears. The more time she spends with him and her new friends, the more she opens up and finally starts living again. She's a strong character and I'm happy how her story unfolded.
I was falling in love with this man who called me beautiful and strong— a warrior. It was time to fight.
As for Erick, once he sees Bailey, he knows she's special and someone he wants to protect and spends his life with. He doesn't have to wait long for her to feel the same.
I could not pinpoint one thing exactly that had attracted me to her so strongly and so quickly, but I’d known without a shadow of a doubt that she was mine.
They make a great team and I was really happy for them to have found each other. They have a lot on their plate but at the end it all plays out as it should. The only thing that bothered me was the last chaper. I think the ending could have been different, the whole BDSM scene was completely unnecessary to be put at the end. Somewhere near the end, yes. At the end, NO! Still, I enjoyed reading their story. The book has a refreshing plot that kept my attention till the end. A great read!
Safety-gang: Safe. (view spoiler)[ No cheating, no OW, there is light flirtation from OM but it's more friendly than anything else. Also, the H was married (quite a few centuries ago) and loved his wife till her death. The h did not love her ex and they were together for a year. I think no condoms very used. Also, we do get to hear something small from their past lovers (ex and wife) but it didn't bother me too much. (hide spoiler)]
So, since I got this one for free I didn't expect too much of it. This book contains multiple stand-alone storieThe rating is only for the first book.
So, since I got this one for free I didn't expect too much of it. This book contains multiple stand-alone stories. I read only two, since I couldn't finish the second one, Astral Ascension.
The first story, Star Crossed, was surprisingly really good with lots of action and a good romance. It'd definitely safety-gang aproved. The story is about how aliens slowly took over our planet and enslaved the rest of the humanity. The h and her friends are a part of rebelion and try to espace being slaves. Their plain works until h gets injured and H, an alien who should be her enemy, saves her. Now, on their own they slowly start trusting each other and form a plan to take out the alien dictator, who is also H's crazy sister.
As for the second story, Astral Ascension, I didn't like it at all. It's about how a human crew in space are the first ones to encounter alien life. Of course they get taken hostage by the aliens and h is then brough to H and (view spoiler)[ has to watch him have sex with OW. The worst part, that made me DNF, is that h gets turned on and at the end the stupid alien tells her that she is now blessed and ready to meet his Gods. (hide spoiler)] Like, WTF?!!!
After that, I didn't even bother with the other stories. :( Thank God it was a free read....more

Soooo... This was an Amazon freebie and like most of them, the stories aren't really that capturing. For me, the heroine ruined the whole damn book. The plot, hero, action and so on was great but I simply couldn't stand to read another page of the heroine's bored superior complex that would lead her to her certain death had the hero not saved her ass continuously. I mean, seriously, mouthing off when you know your opponent it hundred times stronger is just not a good idea. Despite from that dreadful character, the book was quite OK. If only the author knew how to write better female leads... ...more
