  • AI researcher Jennifer Neville has made it her job to ask questions and seek answers that contribute to AI’s progress. It started when she was a young intern thinking about how AI might master the strategy game 𝘨𝘰, and continues in her current role making the tech more effective for users. For the Microsoft research manager, one of the biggest open questions now surrounds the transformer architecture driving today’s fast-paced advances and how the research community will respond to its known limitations. AI agents are writing more code. How can developers help ensure that code is correct? Microsoft Research’s Proof-Driven Development (PDD) Kit explores a more rigorous approach: it translates a developer’s intent into a formal specification, then uses formal verification to prove that generated code meets it. PDD Kit works with Verus for Rust and is integrated with GitHub Next’s Chopin, bringing formal methods into an AI-assisted development workflow for teams. • What keeps someone hopeful when the problems they’re working to solve feel overwhelming? https://msft.it/6043avFNx For Chris White, who leads Catalyst Lab at Microsoft Research, it’s knowing that research and technology can make a difference. Throughout his career, that belief has motivated him to take on difficult, consequential problems while staying focused on what technology can enable for people. On the Microsoft Research Podcast, Chris joins host Principal Technical Program Manager Weishung L. and reflects on hope, service, and what keeps him committed to making a positive difference.

Last week at the OCP Global Summit, MediaTek demoed a live MicroLED optical link in a standard pluggable form factor, built on technology developed at Microsoft Research: inexpensive LEDs instead of copper or lasers to send many parallel streams of data at low power. This is a meaningful next step toward AI datacenters that are more reliable and use less power.

As a testament to our deep co-engineering partnership and shared tenacity with Microsoft, including deep collaboration with Microsoft Research and Microsoft Azure, Mediatek has taken a massive technical leap forward. Our joint work on the MicroLED Active Optical Cable (AOC) has officially transitioned from concept to reality. We hosted exclusive, live demonstrations of our pluggable MicroLED AOC for customers and partners at OCP Global Summit 2026. Scaling AI demands unprecedented power and bandwidth. Our co-developed MicroLED optical engine is built to meet the demands on interconnects of next-generation data centers, with much lower power, lower cost, and higher reliability than conventional AOCs boosted by laser This milestone is a powerful reflection of what is possible when MediaTek’s custom silicon expertise aligns with Microsoft’s hyperscale technology and vision. Together, we are building the physical foundation for the AI era. #DataCenter #CustomSilicon #AILiveDemo

  • Magnetar brings faster, simpler, quantum-ready zero-knowledge proofs Zero-knowledge proofs can verify computing results without rerunning workloads or exposing sensitive data. Magnetar helps bring them into the mainstream with support for standard programming languages, major speed gains, and quantum-resistant security: https://msft.it/6041atJeJ

  • Accurate weather forecasts run out after about two weeks. Yet three to four weeks out is when farmers decide when to plant and communities prepare for floods. New research published in Nature introduces Probabilistic Bias Correction (PBC), a lightweight AI framework that learns from a weather model's past mistakes and corrects them. Applied to forecasts from the industry-leading forecasting center, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF, it improved three-to-four-week rainfall forecasts at 98% of locations worldwide. In ECMWF's global AI forecasting competition, it placed first against six major forecasting centers and 34 teams. The work was led by Lester Mackey and former MSR interns Hannah Guan and Soukayna Mouatadid, with a broad group of collaborators at Microsoft and beyond.
