Reflection

I did notice an improvement in my own writing over the course of the summer semester. The assignments helped the student get back into writing and learn about technical communication, which was the goal. The student felt most proud of their white paper project, where they enjoyed researching environmental issues they were passionate about and communicating personal feelings through writing. If adding an assignment, it would be writing instructions, and if editing one, it would be providing more guidance for the visualization project, which the student struggled with selecting a topic and including different visual elements.

Personal Reflection

Writing Development

I did notice an improvement in my own writing as the summer semester progressed. At the start of the
class, I was slightly out of focus in my writing. It has been at least a year since I took my last
English/Writing class in my first year of college, and jumping right back into it was a shock. Our first big
assignment, the group memo, was an effective introduction back into the writing world for me! The
White Paper Project, I felt, was the project that helped me truly get back into the swing of things. With
the personal research and creativity that I had the opportunity to exercise, the paper helped me relearn
how to effectively craft my writing using both researched fact and personal conclusions/suggestions. I
feel as if the progression of writing assignments throughout the semester did well in slowly introducing
us to writing again.

Course Goals

My goal for the course was to learn more about what technical communication means. I came into the
class not knowing what was to come because I had not had any conscious prior knowledge of the topic.
I didn’t even know the true definition of what technical communications is. After the short 6 weeks of
this class, I do feel as if I met my goal! The assignments we had helped me learn how to write those
forms of communication, which I did not previously have confidence in. I know more about what
technical communication includes – relative to design, communicating across platforms, types of papers
and forms of writing, informality vs formality, and more. This class truly helped to hone my writing skills
past essay techniques (which is what high school tends to focus on!) and I feel greatly accomplished
after this semester.

Assignments

I am most proud of my White Paper Project. I really enjoyed researching the environmental issues I
included in my white paper. Being already a huge lover of the mountains, I was passionate about the
problems I chose to address. I felt as if my writing was strong in many parts of the paper, and I was able
to communicate my personal feelings on the issue through my writing as intended.

If I could add any assignment it would be a sheet of instructions. I enjoyed analyzing the at-home beer
brewing instructions from the beginning of class, and I think writing our own set of instructions for a
topic would be incredibly interesting. While we did analyze instructions for the memo, writing our own
instructions from scratch is completely different and would require creativity and user consideration on
our part.

If I could edit any assignment it would be the visualization project. While I did enjoy being creative with
visuals and photo taking, as well as the uniqueness of the project itself, I did find myself facing a lot of
confusion. I was not sure what topic to focus on because of the relatively small amount of sources
available immediately online, and I wish I knew how to better include haptic visuals in my storyspheres
instead of the basic images I chose. The topic itself proved to be difficult for me, and I just wish I knew
how to better explore the project.
