Reflection Essay
Pierce Hall
ENGL-3140
Portfolio
I feel that throughout the semester I saw a great improvement in my writing. I think most people
would say the more you practice the better you get at doing the thing you are practicing. Being able to
work on the different projects allowed me to practice more technical writing specifically things that are
more realistic to what I would be doing in the workplace. I feel like my use of plain language and being
able to explain terms and technical topics in words that an average person would understand as greatly
improved. In packaging science, it is an extremely technical major and a lot of the terms and phrases that
we use most people would not understand so I can see how being able to break down topics and ideas into
more understandable language would benefit me in the future. I also saw an improvement in my ability to
use research and factual data within my writing. Throughout the course of the semester, we did a lot of
research on our reaktion book and being able to properly cite and reference that material became much
easier for me.
My goal for this course was to develop a better understanding of how to communicate with
people within the business world and within my field of study. Within Clemson and learning
academically you do not get a lot of practice on how you will write and communicate with co-workers
and peers within your career. I think my goal was partially achieved. I learned more about how to
properly create and send a memo and email that would be addressed to someone within my company. I
also learned how to create a resume which I think will give me a bigger advantage when it comes time to
interview for jobs. I think the course to better achieve my goal and other students’ goals could be more
focused on your career choice and less on the reaktion topics. Personally, I felt like having to learn and
research about earthquakes was unnecessary and I think it would be more interesting if for example our
white paper assignment was focused on a topic within what we are learning for our careers.
I would say I am most proud of my white paper assignment. Partially because that was the
assignment that I spent the most time on, so it is nice to see all the research I did in preparation for
creating the paper become a finished product. I think it could potentially be beneficial with today’s time
and age that there be some type of assignment centered around LinkedIn where you must create a post for
your company or about something business related. I feel like more and more people are transitioning to
LinkedIn to communicate with other businesspeople and being able to learn the proper etiquette on there
might be beneficial for future students. I feel like the engagement assignment could be changed. I know
that we did not get to complete the assignment the proper way, but I feel that it does not really relate to
anything that I would be doing in my future career. I like the direction that the assignment is trying to lead
you towards, but I feel like that type of stuff is not quite where it needs to be yet to make and real impact.
