Writing Development

I can definitely see an improvement in my writing throughout the semester. The

assignments showed me the proper way to develop things such as an instruction set,
test script, and an internal email/ memo. The white paper assignment came the easiest
to me since I have written several reports previously. The biggest change in my writing
was my ability to target a specific audience depending on the type of assignment.
Previously, in other courses and assignments, the main audiences that I have had to
address were formal documents meant to inform readers on a certain subject.
Documents like the instruction set, forced me to pick a very specific area and address
that narrow audience. The workplace correspondence assignment also forced me to
address a new type of audience that I was not good at doing so at first attempt.
Eventually, when it came to the portfolio version, my writing had developed to the point
where I could address a narrow audience successfully.
Course Goals
Coming into this class, my goals were to become a better technical writer as it relates to
my future job. Since my goal is to one day take over and run a family business,
technical writing should be very important when it comes to running a business. Some
particular areas where I was trying to improve were things such as workplace
correspondence since emails, memos, and customer interactions will be a part of
everyday activities. I think I improved in these areas through the different assignments. I
believe that overall, this class benefitted me significantly and better prepared me for the
workforce.
Assignments
The assignment I am most proud of is probably the white paper assignment. As I
mentioned in my White Paper DDE, I recently had to write another formal report for my
senior capstone project. The topic for my capstone was “Managing Bacterial Spot in
Peaches,” not only was this a similar assignment, but my Reaktion white paper topic
was “Managing Apple Scab.” My having similar project topics and assignments, I feel
like this was my best work in the course. I was able to use principles from both classes
to better both of my documents. I was also proud of my workplace correspondence
assignment. I think that my improvement in that assignment was the most significant
compared to the other two documents.
As far as recommendations for the course go, I believe the course was very well
designed and laid out. I really liked how the basics and introduction principles were
presented first in the class, then the assignments followed towards the end. Using the
knowledge gained through the first half of class, I was more prepared to do the
assignments when it came time to do so.
