Reflection Essay
ENGL 3140

After this semester and learning all of the new writing material, I feel my writing has improved
substantially. Before this class I had very little experience with “technical writing” and really
loved learning about it. I would say my biggest improvement is becoming clearer in my writing
and eliminating added details that might cause confusion. This class really challenged me to
think before I write and make sure what I am writing has purpose and is clear to the reader.
This class provides great information about writing that you will use for the rest of your career
in the workforce no matter what industry. Each assignment had a clear purpose to why we are
doing it and what we will get out of it which was very nice. I am pleased to have been able to
learn so much from this class and look forward to applying it in my career here shortly.

My goal for this course was to one get an A in the class and to also walk away with writing skills
that I can use the rest of my life. After taking this class I can say that I am much better at writing
and gained insight as to how to address employees/coworkers on certain matters. Each
assignment posed new challenges for me in which I overcame and learned a lot from. I felt like
each assignment contributed to my goal to become a better writer as they showed me different
ways to write and how small things can make a big difference. I won’t know my final grade until
after this is posted but I should fall in the A range which was also one of my goals. I plan to take
all that I have learned and apply it to my writing now and later in my career.

The assignment I am most proud of would have to be the Workplace Correspondence packet. I
feel like this assignment had the most beneficial information that could be taken away. The
assignment was to create a memo and a draft to coworkers for a certain organization about
problems and how to resolve them. My topic being gold, I wrote as a worker of an investment
company and why we should ditch electronic currency and recommend customers to invest in
things that are more reliable. This assignment was challenging and required a good bit of
research, but I learned the most from doing so and feel my writing skills greatly improved. If I
could add an assignment to this course would be possible writing a script for an instructional
video. I feel that this would really challenge the student to think and make it clear for the
audience. Being one of the most “technical” ways to write I feel that it would be very beneficial.
If I could edit any assignment in this course, it would be the engagement assignment. The
reason being is that I don’t feel that it is that beneficial because some people might not be tech
friendly and getting over that curve kills their motivation to learn anything else. I would suggest
maybe gauging a project of that scale just on an easier platform or something students are
familiar with.

Overall I really enjoyed this class as it challenged me as a writer and critical thinker and from
that I have taken away so much that I will use the rest of my life.
