Engl 3140 Reflection Essay

This reflection essay discusses the student's improvement in writing over the course of the semester in ENGL 3140. The student learned how to get directly to the point in their writing, properly format different types of documents, and include the appropriate level of detail. While the student enjoyed creating an instructions packet and felt it showed their improved skills, they disliked revising their own past work and suggest replacing that assignment with redoing an old one with a new topic. The student also provides a positive review of the course and thanks the instructor.

Reflection Essay

My writing has definitely improved throughout the semester. I had never written some of the
kinds of assignments we had. Looking through your PowerPoints and examples allowed me to learn
what to do and what not to do. I am more prepared to get directly to my point in my writing, which
makes it easier to read. I learned a lot of valuable things and will use them in the working world. I
downloaded many of your PowerPoints to reference in the future.

My goal for this course was to pass and improve my writing. I have definitely improved my
writing. As a senior, it has been a while since I have had to take an English class. I learned a lot of
important things in your course and am glad that I took it. I will have to create emails and memos once I
start my job this summer and am glad I got some practice with it. I often will not include as many details
as I should in my writing, and I really think this course helped me improve on that. I was completely
oblivious to most of the formatting rules that we learned for various kinds of work. I am happy I learned
about that so that I can properly format my future projects. Thank you for including assignments that
are real-world applicable. It makes doing them more fun, and I felt like I was always learning stuff that I
could use for the rest of my life. One suggestion I would have would be to change how we did peer
revisions. I was guilty of this sometimes as well, but often it felt like documents were only skimmed and
the feedback from other students was very surface level.

I am most proud of my instructions packet. I think Rubik’s cubes are fun and a lot easier than
many people think it is. I enjoyed creating it and I think it is always fun to teach people something that
they originally thought was challenging and now can enjoy for themselves. I think a fun assignment or
additional part of the instructions packet would be to have students use each other’s. Each student
could pick one instructions packet to use and then give feedback on how easy it was to follow and any
constructive criticism they had. Although it is a valuable exercise to see how much our writing has
improved, I personally dread revising my own work. I overthink a lot of things so for me revising stuff
forces me to overthink every detail of an assignment. I would have much rather done a new assignment.
Maybe instead of going back and editing, we could have instead redone one of the previous assignments
with a new topic. We could showcase our new skills and I think starting from scratch allows for more
creativity and freedom in the direction of a project. This would still allow us to see how much our writing
has improved. Thank you for a great semester and never stop putting pictures of your dogs in the
PowerPoints.
