Reflection Essay
Throughout this semester, I wrote an instructions set and a usability test for it, a report, and a
memo and email (called a workplace correspondence packet). I found that my writing improved
somewhat during this process. I already believed I was a good writer, but this class showed me how to
easily inform a broad audience about a topic that is foreign to them. I found this this will be a useful skill
later in life as the people you talk to every day are not always experts or even knowledgeable in your
field of work. I appreciated each step of this process as well as every assignment we were given, and I
saw how they contributed to the overall purpose of this class. However, I did not think the instructions
were very useful in developing my skills as it was very similar to scientific procedures and methods that I
have written many times, just less professional and more casual. Overall, this was very effective though
it was time consuming, and the workload was heavy at times.
My goal for the course was to improve my writing overall, but mainly to improve how I show my
information to an audience and provide a meaningful interpretation of it that is easily understood. I
think I did meet this goal. Through the use of images and effective formatting (especially use of white
space), I learned a lot about how to provide more colorful and entertaining ways to educate others
about topics I am interested in or concerned about. Additionally, the sectioning, specifically in my
recommendations and solutions sections of my report and memo proved to be informative for me and
helped me understand how others could read a document without them and easily get lost as the topics
meld together.
I am most proud of my report. I think it was very pleasing to look at simply aesthetically and was
very effective in its purpose of informing others about trout stocking and some related issues plaguing
their populations that are very pertinent and relevant to me as a person who fly fishes in North Carolina,
exclusively for trout. Additionally, it took by far the most work as it was the longest and most
information-packed document I wrote. I enjoyed finding useful pictures and formatting them in a useful
and effective way. I also enjoyed the story sphere as it was a new and interesting way to provide
information to a group. The use of VR seems to be growing in all facets of life and it is a very effective
and inclusive way to entertain and educate people. I enjoyed taking the pictures because of how it made
me realize that the issue is much closer to me than I had initially thought. I had believed I understood
how relevant it was but going to these places and seeing the litter and trash made me realize there is so
much more I could do about this issue. If I could change any assignment, it would be the instructions and
usability packet. Specifically, I mean the instructions. I mentioned it earlier, but I did not find this
assignment to be as productive as the others. It was a very simply document and a good start to these
topics and methods of informing. However, I did not feel as though I learned much about writing from it
as I do not think it was relevant to things I will be doing in the future or things I have done in my
internships/co-op rotations. The usability packet was useful, just not the instructions in my opinion.
Additionally, the information I used in it and the research I did was not very technical and did not give
me any knowledge I did not previously have other than very minor things. Overall, the class was very
effective in improving my writing and I enjoyed each assignment in the end.
