SB139468

This service bulletin provides instructions to modify the installation of fire detection sensing elements on certain Leonardo AB139/AW139 helicopters to prevent possible interference with firewall reinforcements. Part I requires inspecting the sensing elements every 25 flight hours and replacing any damaged parts. Part II implements an improved design that installs new brackets to increase clearance between the sensing elements and firewalls. The service bulletin aims to ensure appropriate clearance between these components and prevent chafing issues.

1. PLANNING INFORMATION

A. EFFECTIVITY
All AB139/AW139 helicopters from S/N 31005 to S/N 31157 (except S/N 31007), from
S/N 31201 to S/N 31398 and from S/N 41201 to S/N 41293 (except S/N 41237)
equipped with firewalls reinforcements P/N 3G7106P07351 and 3G7106P07451 or
P/N 3P7119A35152 and 3P7119A35252 (refer to figures 1 thru 3).

B. COMPLIANCE
Part I
Within one hundred (100) FH or one (1) month from receipt of this Service Bulletin,
whichever comes first, and then every twenty-five (25) FH until part II is applied.
Part II
• Immediately after accomplishment of part I, if damages on sensing element beyond
acceptable limits are found during the accomplishment of part I of this Service
Bulletin.
• Within one hundred (100) FH or one (1) month, whichever comes first, after first
accomplishment of part I, if either interference without damages between firewall
reinforcements and sensing element is detected or an acceptable damage on
sensing element is found during the accomplishment of part I of this Service Bulletin.
• Within fifteen hundred (1500) FH or at first engine removal, whichever comes first,
after first accomplishment of part I, if interference is not detected and damages on
sensing element are not found during the accomplishment of part I of this Service
Bulletin.

C. CONCURRENT REQUIREMENTS
N.A.

D. REASON
This Service Bulletin is issued to provide the necessary instructions to modify fire
detection sensing element installation, thus preventing possible interference with the
firewall reinforcements.

E. DESCRIPTION
Following some events of chafing between the engine fire detection system sensing
element and the reinforcements introduced by firewalls retro modification P/N
3G7106P06011 or repair drawing P/N 3G0203P00311, this Service Bulletin provides
the instructions to ensure the appropriate clearance between the parts.
In particular, part I of this Service Bulletin prescribes a visual inspection of the affected
area that has to be repeated every twenty-five FH, in case interference between
firewall reinforcements and sensing element is found, until accomplishment of part II.
Part II provides instructions to implement an improved design (fire detection LH and
RH retromod P/N 3G2610P00211), installing a new bracket between sensing element
and firewall reinforcement, in order to increase clearance and to prevent any possible
interference issue.

F. APPROVAL
The technical content of this Service Bulletin is approved under the authority of DOA
nr. EASA.21.J.005. For helicopters registered under other Aviation Authorities, before
applying the Service Bulletin, applicable Aviation Authority approval must be checked
within Leonardo Helicopters customer portal.

E.A.S.A. states mandatory compliance with inspections, modifications or technical

directives and related time of compliance by means of relevant Airworthiness
Directives.

If an aircraft listed in the effectivity embodies a modification or repair not LHD certified
and affecting the content of this Service Bulletin, it is responsibility of the
Owner/Operator to obtain a formal approval by Aviation Authority having jurisdiction on
the aircraft, for any adaptation necessary before incorporation of the present Service
Bulletin.

G. MANPOWER
To comply with this Service Bulletin the following MMH are deemed necessary:
Part I: approximately one (1) MMH;
Part II: approximately ten (10) MMH.
MMH are based on hands-on time and can change with personnel and facilities
available

has been removed to gain access to the
modification area and adequately protect them until
their later re-use.
b) Exercise extreme care during drilling operations to
prevent instruments, cables and hoses damage.
c) After drilling, remove all swarf and sharp edges.
Apply on bare metal a light film of primer unless the
hole is used for ground connection.
d) Lenghts in the figures are in mm.

PART I
