MEERVOUDE

Miss. R. Venter
(Plurals)

“Meervoude” means “Plurals”.

There are 7 rules that can help you to form plurals in Afrikaans.
BUT remember, there are always exceptions.
Rules:
2) “Twin Vowels” 3) “Sibling Vowels”
Words that have two Words that have two
identical vowels (foon) = vowels, but they aren’t
1) “Single Vowels” DROP one twin + add -e the same = JUST add -e
Words that have short, single vowels (bal) =
DOUBLE the last letter + add -e eg. foon = fone eg. deur = deure
boom = bome skoen = skoene

eg. bal = balle

bak = bakke 4) Words ending in -t or -d very often
have an -s or -e added to them to make
them plural.

eg. tert = terte

hond = honde
maat = maats
Rules: 6) Words ending in -g very
often have a -te added to
them.

5) When nouns end in -ag, the -ag falls away eg. vrug = vrugte
and is replaced by an -e, and -og = -ë kuswag = kuswagte

eg. maag = mae boog = boë

dag = dae

7) When nouns end in -f, the -f is

replaced by a -w (long vowel sound) or
a -ww (short vowel sound).

eg. graaf = grawe

gif = giwwe
