This pattern uses US crochet terms
Hook Size: 4.5 mm
Yarn:
164 yards/87.5g/1.75 skeins used Filcolana Pereuvian Highland Wool (Aran Medium 4 - 10ply)
(50g = 100m [109 yards]
164 yards/18.75g/¾ skein used CaMaRose Midnatssol (Lace 0) (25g = 200m [219 yards])
Size: Fits approx 22.5 inch/57 cm head
Measurements:
Bottom to top of bonnet - 28cm
Face edge to middle of back - 21cm
Ties - 50cm
Gauge: 10 sts & 4 rounds = 9.5 cm on 4.5 mm hook
Other items needed:
● Tapestry needle

NOTES:
- Count your stitches! It’s easy to add stitches or forget a stitch
- The pattern is worked in joined rounds until Round 9 where it is worked in rows
- In the round, the first stitch goes below the ch 2
- In the round, ch 2 does not count as a double crochet
- In the round, join the top of the 1st dc with a sl st
- To keep track of the rounds, each round should end with the last repetition. For example
if you are doing “2dc in the first st, 1dc in the next 5” it should always end with the 5th
single dc.
- In the row, the turning ch 2 counts as a stitch
- In the row, you will place the first stitch in the 2nd stitch
- As a reminder! In the row, the last stitch is the 2nd stitch on the ch 2.

Abbreviations (US):
St{s}: Stitch(es)
Ch: Chain
Sl st: Slip stitch
Dc: Double crochet

DC2Tog: Double crochet two together

Foundation: Ch 4, sl st into 1st chain to make loop (*1) or create a Magic Ring (*2)
Round 1: Ch 2, Work 10 dc in the ring. Join with sl st (10 sts - 2.5cm)
Round 2: Ch 2, First 2 dc goes into stitch right below chain (please see notes, and apply to all
rounds). Work 2 dc in each st in round. Join with sl st (20 st - 5 cm) (*3)
Round 3: Ch 2, *2 dc in first st, 1 dc in the next. Rep* Join with sl st (30 sts - 7cm)
Round 4: Ch 2, *2 dc in first st, 1 dc in the next 2. Rep* Join with sl st (40 sts - 9.5cm)
Round 5: Ch 2, *Place 2 dc in first st, 1 dc in the next 3. Rep* Join round with sl st (50 sts -
12cm)
Round 6: Ch 2, *Place 2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in the next 4. Rep* Join round with sl st (60 sts)
Round 7: Ch 2, *Place 2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in the next 5. Rep* Join round with sl st (70 sts)
Round 8: Ch 2, *Place 2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in the next 6. Rep* Join round with sl st (80 sts -
19cm)
Row 9: From now on work in rows. After each row, turn your work (*4).
Ch 2, Place dc in the next 78 st. The first stitch is placed in the second st for all rows because the
ch 2 is acting as a stitch. Turn. We will be leaving a 2 stitch space (78 sts).
Row 10-13: Ch 2, Place dc in the next 78 st.
Row 14:
We will start to decrease the stitches on the bottom portion of the bonnet so that it will fit
closer to the chin. At this point the bottom of the bonnet lays under my back jaw bone (Approx
27cm length from top of bonnet). If for some reason your bonnet hits above the jaw bone you
can continue Row 10 until it reaches a longer length, and then proceed with Row 14. If you do
this you may not have to complete all the rows to 19. I like to try on my hat while I’m making it
to make sure it’s a perfect fit for me.
Ch 2, DC2Tog (*5), DC in 74 sts, DC2Tog. Turn (76 sts)
Row 15:
Ch 2, DC2Tog, DC in 72 sts, DC2Tog. Turn (74 sts)
Row 16:
Ch 2, DC2Tog, DC in 70 sts, DC2Tog. Turn (72 sts)
Row 17:
Ch 2, DC2Tog, DC in 68 sts, DC2Tog. Turn (70 sts)
Row 18 :
Ch 2, DC2Tog, DC in 66 sts, DC2Tog. Turn (68 sts)
Row 19:
Ch 2, DC2Tog, DC in 64 sts, DC2Tog. (66 sts)
At this point, try on the bonnet if you feel like you need another row or need to stop. It
depends on how you would like it to fit and how far down the face you would like it to go.
This is where I stopped, but you can continue what you did from round 14-19.

Also this is the time where you want to choose the type of straps you would like on the
bonnet. I will go over two ways: a skinny strap or a thicker strap. I chose a thicker strap which
you will see in the photos
Skinny Strap:
Ch 48 (or more if you want longer straps), Sc into 2nd ch from hook to create a turn.
Sc into chains back towards the bottom of the bonnet (*7).
Once you reach the bonnet, we will be finishing off the raw edges with sc (*6). Ch 1, 2 Sc into
each dc along the raw edge.
Once you reach the end, Ch 48 (or how many you chained into the first strap), Sc into 2nd ch
from hook to create a turn. Sc into remaining chains towards the bottom of the bonnet and
fasten off.
Thick Strap:
We will start by finishing off the raw edge on the bottom of the bonnet.
Ch1, 2 Sc into each dc along the raw bottom edge of bonnet (*6). Fasten off.
Starting on one side of the bottom corner of the bonnet.
Create a slip knot in the 4th st from the edge.
Row 1: Ch 2, dc into next 3 stitches. Turn (4 sts).
Repeat Row 1 of the thick straps 42 more times or until desired length. Fasten off.

Adorable way to stay warm during the winter months! It’s a unique alternative to a
toque or balaclava. The bonnet is crocheted in double crochet rounds and then rows.
It is quite quick to make! If you have the basics of crochet this one will be a nice
pattern for you!
