-Bridges of Venice-
Wrap yourself in the luxurious elegance of lace! This generously-sized shawl is both practical and pretty. The three-
triangle construction ensures that the shawl stays securely on your shoulders and offers adequate coverage for your
arms.
In the body of the shawl, curved textural rows overhang the graceful lace motifs and travel between lines of eyelets,
which bring to mind Venetian bridges that cross over the Grand Canal and its tributaries. Lace patterning and shaping
occur only on right side rows, making this a relaxing project.

NOTES
• The sample shown used approximately 1211 yds/1108 m total: Color A: 302 yds/276 m, Color B:
275 yds/252 m, Color C: 262 yds/240 m, and Color D: 372 yds/340 m.
• Before you begin, please read through the entire pattern rst to ensure you understand the
directions.
• Instructions are both charted and written.
• The shawl is knit top down, beginning with a garter tab. A three-stitch garter edge is worked on
both right and left edges.
• The shawl has three wedges (triangles) and four vertical lace insertions (two between the wedges
and one each at right and left edges).
• The Body consists of a Setup and four Sections and is followed by a Border. Body Sections 1 to 4
are worked alternately from Chart A and Chart B. (Each chart repeat increases stitch count by
108).
• Shaping is achieved on RS rows by a yarn over at left and right sides of each wedge. (Stitch count
increases by 6).
• The repeat area (vertical insertion plus one wedge) is worked three times across the row; it is
shown in bold in written instructions and as a blue shaded area in charts.
• The stitch pattern inside a wedge is a 12-stitch repeat; each vertical insertion is 9 stitches wide.
• The 12-stitch pattern repeat inside each wedge is shown in red text in written instructions and as
a red box in charts.
• Stitch markers are indicated to separate pattern repeats and vertical insertions. Use a different
color (or type) of marker on either side of each vertical insertion for easy identi cation; their
positions remain unchanged throughout.
• Rows 1 - 2 in all charts and Rows 19 - 20 in Charts A and B are textured rows. On RS textured
rows, vertical insertions are worked in pattern, and wedge stitches are purled (reverse
stockinette). On WS textured rows, all stitches are knitted (reverse stockinette), except for yarn
overs and the center 7 stitches of each vertical insertion, which are purled.
• On WS rows other than textured rows, all stitches are purled, except for edge stitches and the
rst and last stitches of each vertical insertion, which are knitted.
• Before you begin, plan how to manage yarns when you reach the color transitions. It is
recommended that you wind a speci ed small weight of the new color. There will be more ends
to weave in, but the yarns will remain untangled. If you do not wish to cut the yarn, wind it into
center-pull cakes so that both outer-pull and center-pull can be used from the same cake.
However, this method will cause many tangles and is not recommended.
