ARE YOU PRINTING YOUR PATTERN? This pattern is quite long. Because it includes two versions that better aid
with chart wayfinding depending on which background color and foreground color will be used, I recommended
printing only the following pages for each option:

Standard (Light Color A and Dark Color B): Pages 1 - 24, 38 (39 and 40 are optional)
Inverted (Dark Color A and Light Color B): Pages 1 - 11, 25 - 38 (39 and 41 are optional)

Tools Needles
US6 (4 mm) circular needles (or size needed to obtain gauge).
Varying cable lengths are recommended to accommodate yoke, body, and
sleeve circumferences.

(Optional) Set of 4 or 5 double pointed needles in same size as main circular

needles for small circumference knitting (sleeves).

US3 (3.25 mm) circular needles or a set of 4 or 5 double pointed needles for
collar, body hem, and sleeve cuffs.

Notions
• Tapestry needle
• 5 - 7 Stitch markers; additional stitch markers as desired for smaller
repeat sections
• 3 Stitch holders or waste yarn
• (Optional) Row counter

Yarn & yardage Yarn
Two or more contrasting colors in DK weight yarn. Sizes for this garment are
shown in the pattern as 1 (2, 3, 4, 5)(6, 7, 8).

Sample uses Yarnaceous Fibers Bronto DK base (85% superwash merino wool
and 15% nylon; 246 yd / 225 m per 100 g) using colorway Natrolite (cream) as
Color A, and Orange Kyanite and Crysocolla (teal) as Color B.

Length Required (Includes 10% Excess)

Color A: 463 (577, 690, 804, 917)(1030, 1144, 1256) yards
423 (528, 631, 735, 839)(942, 1046, 1148) meters

Color B: 412 (514, 615, 716, 817)(918, 1020, 1120) yards

377 (470, 562, 655, 747)(839, 933, 1024) meters

If using more than one color for Color B (as shown in the sample), divide the
total yards/meters needed by the number of colors you plan to use to get a
rough estimate of what you’ll need.

Gauge Colorwork: 22 stitches x 26 rounds = 4” / 10 cm after blocking

worked in the round.

Pattern Notes Obtaining Gauge

I naturally knit fairly tightly. If you have difficulty obtaining my gauge, I
recommend going up or down 1 needle size and re-swatching for gauge.
Continue to do this, as needed, until the gauge is matched. If both round and
stitch gauge do not match you can take one of two approaches:
• Prioritize stitch gauge to ensure the circumference is correct OR
• Prioritize round gauge to ensure yoke depth is correct

Construction
The Excavation Sweater is worked top-town in the round. Once the
neckband is complete, short row shaping is utilized to give the back of the
sweater a bit of extra length. The colorwork yoke is then worked utilizing
invisible increases until chest and sleeve circumferences have been met and
sleeves are separated. The lower body continues in the colorwork pattern
until finally reaching a ribbed hem. Sleeves are worked in a similar manner
as the body.

Color A and Color B vs. MC and CC

Because of the alternating color bars in this pattern, I have opted to call
the two “Color A” and “Color B” vs. “Main Color” and “Contrast Color”.
Whichever yarn is forming the key pattern (for example, the stegosaurus
body) treat that as your CC and the background as your MC. This will
alternate between bars and dominance will be clarified in each section.

Tips, Tricks & TUBULAR BIND-OFF IN THE ROUND
A very clean, stretchy bind off for 1x1 ribbing. You will need a tapestry needle
and yarn tail at least 4 times the circumference of your waistband/sleeve cuff.
Tutorials Set-Up
Step 1: Insert tapestry needle into your first stitch as if to knit and pull
through. Move this stitch to your right needle (they will be
bound off at the end).
Step 2: Skip next purl stitch and insert tapestry needle purlwise into
the next stitch. Pull through. Return to the purl stitch you
skipped and insert the needle purlwise into that stitch. Pull
through and move this stitch to your right needle.
Step 3: Bring your tapestry needle to the back of your work and insert
between the next two stitches. Pull through so that your
needle and yarn are now at the front of your work.
Step 4: Insert your tapestry needle into the next purl stitch as if to knit
(the 2nd stitch on our left needle). Pull through, leaving
stitches on left needle.

Remaining Stitches
The rest of the round will utilize these 4 steps until the last 2 stitches remain,
but instead of moving stitches to the right needle, we will drop them instead.

Step 1: Insert tapestry needle into the first knit stitch on your left
knitting needle as if to knit and pull through. Drop stitch.
Step 2: Skip next purl stitch and insert tapestry needle purlwise into
the next stitch. Pull through. Return to the purl stitch you
skipped and insert the needle purlwise into that stitch. Pull
through and drop this stitch from your knitting needle.

Repeat steps 1 – 4 until 2 stitches are left on your left knitting needle. These
are the first 2 sts you worked at the beginning of the round. Drop these stitches
off your needle and weave in/secure your tail. Tubular bind off complete!

Instructions PLEASE READ | Note on Decreasing with Colorwork Chart:
To keep colorwork from shifting due to stitch decreases, k2tog
and ssk using the color of the next chart stitch for each round.
PLEASE READ | Note on Faux Seam:
Moving forward in the pattern, purl the last
stitch of every round in the color that is being
utilized for the background of your motif.

Instructions SPLITTING FOR SLEEVES (FITTED)
CHOOSE ONE OF THE TWO FOLLOWING OPTIONS

IF KEEPING BOR MARKER AT THE CENTER OF THE BACK:

Using Color B (A, B, A, A)(B, B, B) and leaving BOR marker as is...
K32 (41, 50, 55, 64)(71, 78, 87), slip 46 (56, 64, 64, 82)(92, 96, 102) sts to stitch
holder or waste yarn.

Cast on 8 (8, 8, 16, 16)(20, 24, 24) underarm sts using backward loop cast on.

K 64 (82, 100, 110, 128)(142, 156, 174), slip 46 (56, 64, 64, 82)(92, 96, 102) sts to
stitch holder or waste yarn.

Cast on 8 (8, 8, 16, 16)(20, 24, 24) underarm sts using backward loop cast on,
then knit to BOR marker.

144 (180,216, 252, 288)(324, 360, 396) total stitches.

IF MOVING BOR MARKER TO UNDER THE ARM:

Break current color.
Slip 32 (41, 50, 55, 64)(71, 78, 87) sts to your right needle to be knit later, slip
46 (56, 64, 64, 82)(92, 96, 102) sts to stitch holder or waste yarn.

Join Color B (A, B, A, A)(B, B, B) and cast on 4 (4, 4, 8, 8)(10, 12, 12),

Instructions PLEASE READ | Note on Decreasing with Colorwork Chart:
To keep colorwork from shifting due to stitch decreases, k2tog
and ssk using the color of the next chart stitch for each round.
PLEASE READ | Note on Faux Seam:
Moving forward in the pattern, purl the last
stitch of every round in the color that is being
utilized for the background of your motif.
