Schnecken Beanie (means snail hat)


By Babette Ulmer – a hat with a lace pattern (can also be extended into a beanie).

Material
Yarn:
DK yarn with an approximate length of 225 m (246 yds)/100 g.
or:
Fingering Yarn (100 % wool, approximate length 400 m (437 yds)/100 g)

Yardage:
Locoporella Merino DK (100 % wool, approximate length 225 m (246 yds)/100 g:
Salbei 55 g = 124 m (136 yds)
or:
Locoporella Merino 4ply (100 % wool, approximate length 400 m (437 yds)/100 g):
Tanne 28 g = 112 m (123 yds)

Sizes (the hat is also adaptable for smaller or larger sizes):


Locoporella Merino DK: 54 - 56 cm (21.5 - 22“) head circumference
Locoporella Merino 4ply: 52 - 54 cm (20.5 – 21.5“) head circumference

Needles:
Locoporella Merino DK: A set of 3.5 mm (US 4) and 4 mm (US 6) double pointed needles each.
Locoporella Merino 4ply: A set of double pointed needles 2.5 mm (US 2) and 3 mm (US 3) each.
Others:
Tapestry needle for weaving in the yarn ends.

Gauges:
Locoporella Merino DK: 22 sts and 31.5 Rds = 10 cm (4“) measured over lace pattern using 4 mm (US
6) needles
Locoporella Merino 4ply: 28 sts and 39.5 Rds = 10 cm (4“) measured over lace pattern using 3 mm (US
6) needles
Measure the swatch after washing and drying.

Abbreviations
k = knit
k2tog = knit two stitches together
k3tog = knit three stitches together
m(s) = stitch marker(s)
p = purl
p2tog = purl two stitches together

RS = right side

Rib pattern:
Continue using the smaller set of double Cast off using the “stretchy bind off” method.

Chart
Every Rd is shown. Work the marked repeat 8 times per Rd. Work Rd 1 – 45 once, then work Rd 44 and
56 another 5 times for the hat made of Merino DK and another 8 times for the hat made of Merino
4ply. Then work Rd 56 and 57 once again.
Pattern note: Cast on only 7 sts for a smaller head made of Merino DK and repeat the pattern repeat
only 7 times in every Rd or cast on 9 sts for a larger hat made of Merino DK and repeat the pattern
repeat 9 times in every Rd.
