BRIOCHERRY
A beanie in two‐color brioche stitch SKILL LEVEL ‐ MEDIUM
May is probably not the perfect month to knit a hat. But this pattern just felt irresistible which is why I would
like to share it with you! The colors remind me of some of my favorite fruits (which can be found in my garden
in May): sweet strawberries and sour cherries. When I get to the crown I never really have plan, it's always a
big surprise!
I used a wonderful speckled yarn, made by Walkcollection as my main color and a semisolid yarn by Malabrigo
as a contrasting color. This pattern actually came up by coincidence, when I was trying to find a way to
increase two central stitches... but I am more than happy how it worked out!
The hat has a brim, is very stretchy, slightly slouchy and well‐fitting at the same time. The pattern has only six
repeating pattern rows and is based on basic brioche stitches, increases and decreases. It's important to note
that there is no 4‐stitch‐decrease to be knit. You can do it, knitters!
The hat can be knit in multiple sizes only by changing needle size and gauge; Block the finished cap over a
steep‐sided bowl or other head‐shaped form to smooth the crown.

TECHNIQUES Cast on, k, p, Brk, Brp, brRsldec, brLsldec, brkyobrk, brpyobrp
ABBREVIATIONS CO = cast on, dpn(s) = double pointed needle(s)
p =purl, k= knit, MC= Main color, CC= Contrast color
st(s)= stitch(es), rnd= round, yo = yarn over, RH= Right hand, LH= Left hand,
rep = repeat instructions between the * EOR = end of round
brk = k the stitch that was slipped in the previous round together with its yo
brp= p the stitch that was slipped in the previous round together with its yo
brkyobrk= brk1, leaving stitch on the LH needle, yarn over, then brk1, into the same
stitch, 2 stitches increased ( in the following CC rnd: sl1yo, p1, sl1yo)
brpyobrp= brp1, leaving stitch on the LH needle, yarn over, then brp1, into the same
stitch, 2 stitches increased ( in the following MC rnd: sl1yo, k1, sl1yo)
sl1yo = work a yarn over followed by a slipped stitch by bringing the yarn forward
between the needles, slipping the stitch purl‐wise and bringing the yarn to the back
over the needle, slipped stitches and accompanying yarn overs are treated as a
single stitch in stitch counts
brRsl dec= involving 3 stitches, 2 stitches decrease slanting right, slip first stitch knit‐
wise, knit next stitch, pass slipped stitch over, place stitch on LH needle and pass the
following stitch over, place stitch on RH needle
brLsldec= involving 3 stitches, 2 stitches decrease slanting left, slip first stitch knit‐
wise, brk next two stitches together, pass slipped stitch over
KNITTING DIRECTIONS The hat is worked in the round from the bottom up (brim to crown).
Work two‐color brioche pattern rounds in color indicated (MC or CC). Do not break
yarn between rounds, simply drop the previous color, leaving it in front and pick up
the new one without crossing yarns.
If you are counting rounds, count only the stitches going up on the knit column. You
have to work 4 rounds, 2 with each color, to count 2 rounds.
I recommend Nancy Marchant´s classes and wonderful books on brioche knitting.
Her online class offers more information on the intriguing brioche technique.
Using MC and 16" circular needle, CO 84sts using the Twisted German CO method.
Do not turn work, continue working on this right side. Slide work to the other end of
the circular needle and join CC yarn for the set‐up row.
SET‐UP Set‐up row: Using CC yarn, with yarn in back *sl1yo, p1* rep to end of row, join in
round, being careful not to twist stitches and to keep the yarn over the first
slipped stitch.
Now you are ready to start knitting two‐color brioche in the round:
BRIM Rnd1, MC: *brk1, sl1yo* rep to end of round, drop MC yarn in front of work
Rnd1, CC: *sl1yo, brp1* rep to end of round, drop CC yarn in front of work
Repeat Rnd1, MC and Rnd1, CC 11 more times

sts decreased = 48 sts remain
Repeat Rnd1, CC; Rnd2, MC and Rnd2, CC once more

remain
Repeat Rnd1, CC; Rnd2, MC and Rnd2, CC once more
Bring CC yarn in back
Rnd7, MC: slip the first st purlwise with yarn in back * sl1yo, brRsldec * rep to EOR,
using the first stitch for the last decrease
12 sts decreased = 12 sts remain
Rnd7, CC: * brp1, sl1yo* rep to EOR, break CC yarn and pull inside
Rnd8, MC: *k2tog* rep to EOR, 6 sts decreased = 6 sts remain
FINISHING Break MC yarn and place on tapestry needle. Weave strand through the remaining
6 sts and pull close. Weave in ends separately. Block your hat to smooth
brioche stitches and crown carefully.
PATTERN CHARTS The pattern charts are to be followed for knitting in the round, reading from the
bottom right, then reading it from right to left, up the chart, just as you are knitting.
