Anonymous asked:

Is there a release date for the new Korra comic?

Not yet!

They were announced last year at SDCC in July 2015, and the artist was announced last year at NYCC in October 2015.

The tentative release date was Fall 2016 (aka now), but since then, we’ve gotten ZERO news and the old artist dropped out. We have figured out the new artist (who hasn’t been announced yet). A new announcement was scheduled for SDCC in July of this year, but was cancelled and pushed back to NYCC of this year.

So hopefully we get a new announcement at the Dark Horse panel at NYCC on this Saturday at 5:15pm!

NYCC trouble?

Irene Koh, the presumed new Korra comics artist, just tweeted this:

Dark Horse recently made it pretty obvious the panel will have a Korra announcement, so we don’t know right now whether this is still going to happen without the artist there.

It probably still will happen, because it was already pushed back from SDCC to now, but with Mike DiMartino (the supposed writer of the Korra comics) in California during NYCC this year, it’s unknown who at all would even be at the panel.

Hopefully we get more information from Dark Horse soon, keep up on our twitter!

Edit:

image

This doesn’t really tell us much but hopefully it means that everything will be cleared up soon!

We previously reported that (we believe) the new Korra comics artist is Irene Koh, and that this will be announced at NYCC. More evidence for this has come to light.

First, this question and answer from her ask.fm earlier in the year:

image

There was a panel planned for the Korra comics announcement at SDCC this year, which was delayed:

image

At a similar time, Mike DiMartino says he won’t be able to attend.

This is all corroborated by Dark Horse’s twitter:

which takes a turn for the worse in June/July (same time as Irene and Mike say they’re not going)

image
image

A planned panel being cancelled would explain why they had “secret” new Korra posters by Irene Koh printed and ready despite there being no Korra news. And why she was doodling Korra while in San Diego.

It also indicates there were probably various problems with the development of the comic behind the scenes.

Whatever the reason, the panel was moved to NYCC:

The NYCC 2016 Panel

They have announced that there will be a “Dark Horse: Classified Featuring Avatar the Last Airbender” panel at NYCC on Saturday, October 8th from 5:15-6:15pm in room 1A18. No mention of Korra, but Dark Horse usually refers to the whole Avatar franchise as Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the “classified” in the title, and the description

The can’t-miss Dark Horse panel of NYCC 2016! Join Dark Horse creators, staff and a couple very special guests for the first word on Avatar news, announcements and even a surprise or two!

provide at least some reason to get our hopes up.

The most interesting thing to note though is that that this is repeatedly being referred to as a project announcement. The Korra comics were already somewhat “announced” at last year’s NYCC, but with very little information given. In the year since, the original artist dropped out, there has been zero news, probably conflict with the development of the comics causing delays, and the focus of Korra products release has shifted back towards the show’s roots.

This leads to the possibility that whatever the comics were supposed to be a year ago has been scrapped and an entirely new Korra comic series has been developed, which is why it’s being referred to as an “announcement” again. This is just a guess though.

NYCC is coming in a little under a month— keep up to date with our #nycc2016 and #korra comics tags!

Correction on our last post: the date of the NYCC panel is Saturday October 8th, not Thursday.

Check out these preview pages of North and South Part 1, to be released on September 14th! (via Amazon)

The last five pages of the comic have also been accidentally released on Amazon. They (as well as the back cover) are under the readmore at the bottom of this post, beware of major spoilers.

NYCC Panel News

The date of the Dark Horse Avatar Comics panel at NYCC has been set! It will be held on Saturday, October 8th from 5:15-6:15pm in room 1A18.

This is the description of the panel:

The can’t-miss Dark Horse panel of NYCC 2016! Join Dark Horse creators, staff and a couple very special guests for the first word on Avatar news, announcements and even a surprise or two!

No mention of the Korra comics, but that could be the “very special guests” and “surprise”. Hopefully.

Reminder that the previously announced artist for the Korra comics dropped out, and that we figured out that the new artist will be Irene Koh, detailed in this post here.

Hopefully this is officially confirmed and we get lots more interesting info about the Korra comics at this mysterious panel.

Unconfirmed: Irene Koh is the new Legend of Korra comics artist

Today we bring you an unconfirmed scoop to end the drought of information concerning the upcoming Korra comics. This isn’t a leak, it’s a very well-educated guess.

The above-left poster (enhanced and de-skewed based on multiple source photos) was “secretly” released at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, meaning they didn’t announce its existence but if you asked for it at the Nick booth, they would give it to you. No artist was given credit, but upon some research it is obvious that the artist who drew this poster is Irene Koh. A selection of some of her art can be seen above-right, and the following graphic depicts a comparison between her Twitter icon and Korra in the poster, stylistic similarities that all but confirm this is the poster artist.

image

The reason this is significant is because it is rumored that the same artist who drew the secret poster is also the new artist for upcoming The Legend of Korra comics. This isn’t confirmed, but multiple sources, who we won’t expose, strongly point to this being the case, which we can personally corroborate based on insider evidence that looks fairly compelling.

It has been almost a year since we’ve had any communication from Nick or Dark Horse about the comics, a feeling all too familiar for the Korra fandom. The comics were announced at last year’s NYCC 2015, with Brittney Williams as the artist and Michael Dante DiMartino as the writer. The first comic/graphic novel in what is probably a trilogy was supposed to come out in Fall of this year, but since the announcement, Brittney Williams dropped out and that release date has 100% fallen through since there has been NO news since last year. It’s likely that there were multiple delays in both art and writing, but losing the artist and finding a new one was definitely at least one of the reasons.

Irene Koh will likely be announced as the new artist of the upcoming Legend of Korra comics at this year’s NYCC 2016, October 6-9.

Michael Dante DiMartino, ATLA and TLOK co-creator and writer, will still be the writer of the comics (or at least the first comic?).

Irene Koh has previously worked on DC’s Batgirl Origins and Wonder Woman, Marvel’s 1602, and IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Some lok fanart can be seen on her blog, which is a different style from the poster, but it’s unknown if either style will be used for the comics.

Stay tuned for official news about the upcoming Korra comics at this year’s New York Comic-Con. Panels will be announced soon. Hopefully we will get confirmation of the unconfirmed info in this post, and also much more as well! It’s likely that with how long the wait has been, some combination of plot descriptions, titles, covers, previews, release dates etc. will be revealed.
