2016
Sutton's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[9]
Property taxes
- Excerpt: "I believe increases in property tax above the rate of inflation must have voter approval. The legislature passed a bill that did exactly this, and I supported it."
School funding
- Excerpt: "As Vice-Chair of the Education Budget Committee, I worked hard to protect K-12 funding during a year in which reductions were seriously being discussed. I believe we owe it to school districts to keep the promise we made when the block grant legislation was passed to stabilize school funding until a new school funding formula is passed."
Pro-life legislation
- Excerpt: "I supported the effort to ensure that no tax dollars go to support Planned Parenthood, an abortion provider. I also supported legislation that prohibited babies from being torn apart in the womb as part of an abortion procedure."
Second Amendment
- Excerpt: "I am a strong supporter of gun ownership and the right of citizens to arm themselves for protection."
Prior years
Sutton's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[10]
Pro-Life
- Excerpt: "I am pro-life unconditionally. My core belief is that society exists for the sole purpose of protecting the unprotected and any law that legitimizes the killing of a person harms, yes the person killed, but the entire society."
Pro-Gun Rights
- Excerpt: "Gun ownership is a right guaranteed by our Constitution, and I am a big fan of our Constitution."
Education
- Excerpt: "Public policy should support parental choice. Consequently, base state aid for each pupil should follow the child, regardless of the school chosen by the parents as best for the child."

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
