Today was my sign-off at KX News (Nexstar Media Group) in Bismarck and Minot, North Dakota.

Being Creative Services Director for a pair of TV stations was a surprisingly adventurous chapter of my life, filled with lots of learning on the fly, thinking on my feet, and a few thousand road miles with a great soundtrack.

I had an admirable boss, a fine assortment of personalities in front of and behind the cameras, and in Creative Services, a ragtag team of creatives I am proud to have been part of that got stuff done. I learned much from them, managed to share a trick or two from my own experiences, and did my best to keep everyone and everything going strong. We became a team in the truest sense of the word, with minimal subterfuge and legerdemain.

Alas, some things were beyond my control, like corporate acquisitions, workforce reductions and the occasional werewolf attack.

Stupid werewolves.

They say all good things must come to an end, but perhaps that’s to open up an opportunity for more-gooder things to begin.

I sure hope so. If you see one, let me know.

Watching someone share their screen on Zoom and seeing the dozen AI-related icons, tabs, and popups polluting every application and web app is pretty amazing. It is so much like intrusive advertising both in how invasive it is and in how much it degrades the general experience. I don't use any of these apps and aggressively use uBlock Origin rules to block every icon, widget, and box having to do with AI on every web site I do regularly visit. Having made all these rules over time I had a sense for how bad it was getting but till today I hadn't had the full frontal assault of AI cruft the tech world has gifted us.

trend I’m seeing. Familiar songs rendered as sweet lullaby symphonic melodies.

      * Intuit TurboTax using “Bicycle Race” by Queen

      * Bank spot (Bank of America?) using “Linger” by the Cranberries.

All morphed into almost unrecognizable background texture sans lyrics.

Here's the thing about the X advertising lawsuit: Musk didn't lose because of bad lawyers. He lost because antitrust law isn't designed to protect you from the consequences of your own decisions. The judge literally wrote she had "no qualm" dismissing it.

Ad revenue on X dropped by more than 50% after he gutted the content moderation team and disbanded the Trust and Safety Council. Then he sued Mars, CVS, Colgate, and a dozen others, claiming their decision to stop buying ads was an illegal conspiracy. The court said no. Choosing not to buy from someone isn't a crime. It's just a Tuesday. This is about how leaders respond when the market sends a signal. 📊

🚪 Advertisers didn't abandon X because of a coordinated plot; they left because the product stopped meeting their needs
📜 GARM, the brand safety group at the center of this, dissolved itself in August 2024 under pressure from the lawsuit, and X still lost anyway

When your customers leave, the first question shouldn't be "who do I sue?" It should be "what did I do that made leaving feel like the right call?"

… and run an campaign where they simply show that *their* cars have proper door handles, physical control knobs that don't need one to keep reading a screen away from looking at the road, and where a 5 year old cannot cause a motorway pile-up with 'Hey Google! Emergency stop!'.

As others have noted, the problem is that the market is accustomed to browsers being "free", ever since illegally leveraged their OS to destroy by driving their income to (essentially) zero.

I started thinking about it in terms of how I support various creators for small amounts with monthly . Could you fund reasonable and of purely based on low-cost subs from users? Bigger donations from companies or billionaires would be welcome, but it would need to be sustainable on its own first.

Development wouldn't have to be as expensive as what does (which is mostly counter-productive anyway...).

There are still millions of people - more than a hundred million, apparently - who use Firefox, and many of those are more knowledgeable about and involved with open-source . They're more likely to appreciate that funding development is the key to keeping Firefox relevant, and keeping the "AI" / / / out of the .

Some people are starting to pay a few bucks a month just for a search engine subscription. Why not pay for your browser? For many people, it's the software they use more than everything else put together. For some people, it's the only software they ever use.

I'd pay $2 a month to support my browser, if it kept it safe from <handwave> all that </handwave>.

As long as they can do that, and as long as we have inadequate legislation, the zone will be flooded with adverts.

The question of whether adverts actually work is notoriously hard to answer, because it's difficult to tie a sale to an advert. That's one reason companies track us so hard on the Web — to see which campaigns are most effective — but we can defeat that tracking with a good such as and (in jurisdictions with a semblance of privacy legislation) by denying permission to track.

Open the settings for uBlock Origin, path to "My Filters", and add this line:

                                                                                      github.com;copilot-popover-button"]
(edit: my host is interpreting this code as a hashtag and putting a spurious semicolon ; between the ...testid=" part and the copilot... part. Just remove that semicolon).

Then click "Apply changes". Chances are that will change its page coding and these buttons will re-appear. This one seems to be working for me for now though so I figured I'd share.
