Is it just me, or are LLMs starting to produce python code with type hints for EVERYTHING? Call me lazy or a bad programmer, but I don't use type hints so aggressively.
When using llm generated code, do you "clean it up" to match your style, or leave it all in there?
Today's working day spent in pair programming with #Copilot. We were reverse-engineering a #Bluetooth device to make it work with our app. Those devices were working previously, but the manufacturer later made it much more complicated to use them with third-party apps.
This was my first such experience. I mean #AI, not #ReverseEngineering.
First of all, that was a fun process. Long, complex, but fun. Second, that was unexpectedly successful. Also, I learned a lot. Everything else is NDA.

M365 News Roundup for January 2026
News slowed over the holidays, but it's picking up as we move through 2026

I'm reading Microsoft's T&Cs for Copilot for Microsoft 365, because I live a rock and roll lifestyle.
It says here, "Microsoft is not a competent authority".
Might frame that.
Under Satya Nadella:
Windows 10/11 garbage OSes
Azure growth completely stagnant for years
Xbox dead
Numerous acquisitions resulting in 10s of
thousands of layoffs and virtually nothing gained.
Copilot
Hey we got WSL though. That's pretty cool.
Many years ago I made this high-level observation about the difference between UNIX-like operating systems and Windows.
In the UNIX mental model, that CPU and RAM belongs to the end user. As an operating system, you want to be a good steward of those resources and make as much of it available to the user as possible. The OS should be very reluctant to include functionality that increases how much a system uses while "idle."
In the Windows mental model, the computer's resources are available to whatever Microsoft thinks they're useful for. It's good to leave some for the user, but Microsoft will take more if it thinks it is a good idea.
Apple is on this continuum, too, and I think they're more at the Windows end of the spectrum. They're definitely bumping elbows, if they're not sitting in the same chair. If Apple thinks something resource hungry like Spotlight is a good idea, they will bundle it.
What got me thinking about this was thinking about the resources it probably frees up to completely rip #Copilot out of #windows11
https://www.howtogeek.com/how-to-rip-out-copilot-from-windows-11/
Maybe they used Cop pilot to update the UX.
If it's confusing enough, maybe you will ask cop pilot to open apps.
If #Microsoft hadn't fired #Clippy, but had instead placed him in a role where he could flourish, he would not have trained on all that data to become #copilot. Clippy is on a vengeance tour.

Microsoft rush to add AI to everything they have failed or ignored making existing products better.
As I am forced to use #O365 here is my wish list for enhancements.
1. The ability to schedule a follow up meeting from an existing meeting in Calendar without having to recreate the whole invite from scratch.
2. Add notes to emails. We have a shared mailbox and I would love the ability to add notes to a email for my colleagues or keep a note on the email for later reference.
3. Outlook client that has ZERO problems updating messages. My inbox is not even that full and the client hangs when updating folders and messages. It is the bane of my existence.

Lawyers and governments can request your chats as evidence or leads."
Bought 5 tickets for the PowerBall last night and decided to experiment this morning by asking both #Copilot (Consumer) and #ChatGPT to check my numbers. I gave them the same prompt - "Did any of these numbers win last night's PowerBall" accompanied by a photo of my ticket.
Copilot didn't correctly OCR the ticket getting several of the numbers wrong. ChatGPT accurately read the ticket. Sadly we didn't win.
Disappointing that Copilot wasn't able to accurately read the numbers, though.
Microsoft Scales Back AI Goals Because Almost Nobody Is Using Copilot

Haaaa haaaa haaaa haaaa haaa!
I actually did come up with a helpful use for #AI while I was meeting with my boss.
I'm frequently annoyed when a coworker says a feature is impossible to build, when I know there must be a simple way to do it. Now I can ask #Copilot for a solution, and since it will never say something is impossible, I can just forward the response to my coworker and say "Uh, oh, artificial intelligence is going to steal your job if can't come up with a better plan than this!"
My boss is being forced to buy me a #copilot license, since she can't just say that someone on her team is not going to be following the same processes as everyone else, so now if I don't use #AI, #Microsoft can just pocket the subscription fee as profit, which is not acceptable.
I guess I will be spending a few hours each month crafting prompts like "rewrite all of the comments in this code as if you were a Muppet who is obsessed with eating cookies."

Which I certainly would intent…
I saw an interesting article yesterday that said #Microsoft was finally admitting that some program of theirs was so bloated and #slow to start that it was harming the user experience, so they were considering pre-loading it at boot (or #login) time so #users wouldn't see the huge delay when they went to open it.
(Of course, that would slow down booting or login...)
But that program is ... Windows File Explorer.
So let me get this straight - a glorified file picker and directory navigator is so #bloated and slow it can't start up instantly? And thousands of engineers can't figure out how to make it fast or efficient?
Maybe they should ask #CoPilot to speed it up.

#Microsoft posted a video showing Microsoft 365 #Copilot doing some cool and useful things with a proposal document and a statement of work and in both cases they showed uploading the document to Copilot.
I couldn't help but think...shouldn't those documents be in your SharePoint? Why not just use the CIQ? 🤔
I'm okay to drive or ride a car that was built with the help of power tools or even by a robotic assembly line. It doesn't have to be 100% hand made to be safe.
I heard a #Copilot commercial on a #LegalTech podcast yesterday. Not that surprising, except...it was a commercial for the CONSUMER version of Copilot. No wonder lawyers are confused - they're hearing ads talking about features their version of Copilot doesn't have. 🤦♂️
I usually use either #ChatGPT (for everyday tasks) or #Claude (for coding), but I found #GitHub #Copilot extremely useful when a CI job fails. There is a button that opens a menu, and one of the items is "Explain the error". It spawns a chat with a premade prompt, so no need to frentically sift through logs, first finding the failing job with a screen reader, then trying to find the error in question. It can be done of course, but afterwards, if Copilot's explanations are not good enough. #AI #AITip #Accessibility
I went to a presentation at work today about things one can do with copilot. The presenter used real examples mostly involving asking copilot to tell him how to automate common tasks -- like e-mailing people based on the contents of a spreadsheet. All tasks that could have been automated years ago with macros or Power Automate, &c.
My first thought was "there's nothing new here," as I dreamed up several ways I could have automated these tasks ages ago, no copilot required. But that's the thing. People have been plugging away at data entry roles and other office tedium that simply have not needed to exist since the late 90s. It is not that AI can suddenly automate tasks that couldn't have been before, they've been automate-able for a long time but the people doing them had no idea _how_.
Would it have been better had the presenter learned how to write his own macros? I would argue yes. But the copilot answer was better than continuing with pointlessly manual
tasks.

#Microsoft is clearly becoming desperate due to low adoption rates of #Copilot.
Apparently, Microsoft is now pushing Copilot to all #Microsoft365 personal subscribers and calling it a "subscription price increase". Only when you decide to cancel your subscription are you presented with the option to switch to "Microsoft 365 Personal Classic" without Copilot (and nearly the old price). The classic plan is not presented as an option unless you try to cancel your subscription.
This is a classic scammy trick: Modify the existing plan and add the feature no one wants and hide the old plan from view. Presto, now you have an insane adoption rate you can present to investors as a great success.
I personally don't use Microsoft subscription services, so I don't know if they tried this bullshit in the EU, but if they did, they're asking for trouble. They got sued in Australia over this already: https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/microsoft-in-court-for-allegedly-misleading-millions-of-australians-over-microsoft-365-subscriptions "Microsoft in court for allegedly misleading millions of Australians over Microsoft 365 subscriptions"
