Generative Al is based on massive theft from creatives, without consent, credit or compensation. Using gen-Al is asking a chatbot to spit out the combined efforts of ripped-off creatives. It is industrializing and devaluing human expression, artistry and craftsmanship. Creatives are losing their jobs and motivation because tech corporations unscrupulously absorb and exploit their work.
Tech corporations are building more and more huge Al data centers, consuming lots of internet bandwidth, energy, water and other valuable resources, increasing scarcity, prices and emissions, degrading the already fragile environment.
When you're using an LLM like a chatbot or image generator, every bit of data you submit helps build a personal profile of you and your relatives, contributing to the power and reach of corporations and governments, and decreasing your privacy and security.
Generative Al enables fake images, videos, text and speech that are widely used for abuse, deception, cybercrime, misinformation and propaganda, polluting safety, justice, science, news reporting and much more.
Al use outsources your thinking and decision-making. Challenging your brain is essential to maintain mental agility, and to avoid Al dependency. Increasingly leaving tasks up to chatbots and gen-Al will result in a decline of skills, problem-solving capacity, independence and self-confidence.

I'm getting the impression from all the LLM-related discussions and commits that this is a lost cause and I'll probably have to fork this plugin if I want an MCP-free version of it. Looks like they took up slop coding earlier this year too, which is another area of concern.

Step 14: Everything else. I've used Ninite for decades to bootstrap a bare computer into usability. Check the boxes, get an executable that will download and install the apps with the best defaults. Only criticism is the free version dumps a bunch of icons on your desktop.
My personal absolute minimum app list is this:

For utility, I'll add these:

You can keep the Ninite executable around and rerun it later to update existing installs. The EXE isn't locked to a specific machine, so if you're doing several machines you can just dump it on the install flash drive and run it directly.
Manufacturer utilities like Dell's SupportAssist can be okay, but you've got to keep a close eye on them to make sure they don't do something dumb like install McAfee for "free".

Step 13: Verify Windows activation. Settings -> System -> About -> Product Key and Activation. The system has probably already activated itself in the background. If not, do it now. Or not. I'm not the software police. You can also use the MassGrave Activation Scripts, at your own risk.

Step 12: Install/run Privacy.Sexy and WinAeroTweaker.
Privacy.Sexy can break things, so I normally just use the "Standard" setting. I've had good luck with its revert options when it DID break things, but your mileage will vary.
WinAeroTweaker will restore some older Windows defaults to their better options. Once you find settings you like you can save and load those settings to a simple file.

Step 11: Install Vivaldi, set as default browser, configure as desired. For me that's a dark mode theme, crank the built-in ad-blocker to max, make Settings a tab instead of its own window, setting the search engines to DuckDuckGo, and install the extensions for 1Password, PrivacyBadger, and uBlock Origin.

Step 9: Update Windows. Settings -> Windows Updates -> Check for Updates and Advanced Options -> Optional Updates. Just grab everything, get to the latest version. Check "Receive updates for other Microsoft products" too. This covers MS Office and PowerShell. This will take a while, and make sure the bullshit in step 6 didn't get re-enabled.

Step 6: Kill the annoying semi-setup bullshit Windows pulls after updates. Settings app -> System -> Notifications -> Additional Settings -> Uncheck "Suggest ways to get the most out of Windows and finish setting up this device" and "Get tips and suggestions when using Windows". These are the terrible interruptions Microsoft has started imposing after some updates that will do the absolute bullshit like tricking you into using Onedrive or switching your browser back to Edge. They're gross and terrible and if we had working antitrust enforcement they'd get another deserved crotch-kicking over it.

Step 5: Install drivers for devices Windows didn't handle during installation. The old Device Manager still exists. Right-click on the Start button/Windows logo, and select "Computer Management". There you can see devices, including ones that don't have working drivers. Either run the executables you downloaded earlier, or right-click on the problem device and "Update Driver", pointing it at the folders you unpacked.

Step 4: Boot Windows 11 Installer. Start fresh, blow away everything on the existing internal drive. The default manufacturer programs are almost never worth saving. The restore partitions are going to have old crap that will be replaced almost immediately when you start updating.
Modern devices won't have a Windows license sticker; the key is baked into the UEFI. Sometimes the Windows installer will pick up the right edition (home/pro/enterprise), sometimes you have to select it yourself. Either way, you can install Win11 without needing to provide a license key at this step. See also the MAS further down.

Step 2: In addition to Windows, there are a couple of other things you want to grab.
Check to make sure you have the latest UEFI (AKA/FKA BIOS) version for your device. Get this from the vendor with their name on the box directly from their website. Download the version specific to your model/serial number.
Also grab the latest system/platform, graphics, and network/wifi drivers from the manufacturer's website. 90% of these "executables" will be zip files that you can extract and point Windows at the folders later.
Lastly, you want to grab other stuff you want to install immediately. For me, that's Privacy.Sexy, WinAeroTweaker, Vivaldi browser, a Copilot Killer Script and the latest releases of PowerShell, Windows Terminal, and PowerToys.
After you create your install USB, you can copy the BIOS update, drivers, and miscellaneous programs to it.

Step 1: Prepare Media. This requires a working computer.
Microsoft provides clean (for Microsoft) Windows 11 ISOs directly on their website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11 Download the ISO directly from Microsoft. Don't download the ISO from any third-party sites. You can also use the Microsoft "Create Windows 11 Installation Media" program which will automate a lot of the process.
With the Windows 11 ISO, you can use Rufus to create your Win11 install flash drive. Rufus can do some fun things like kill the Microsoft Account requirement.
MAKE SURE YOUR INSTALL USB DEVICE ISN'T YOUR BACKUPS USB DEVICE
You can also just dump multiple ISOs on your IODD. I keep older versions of Win11 install ISOs around specifically so I can just use the bypassnro trick to create a local account, but there will probably always be some option to get around the online account requirements.

Step 0: BACK UP YOUR DATA. On a separate, external device like the 32 GB or larger flash drive. Copy your user profile(s) and set it aside. You can just copy C:\Users and get 99% of things you'll care about. Get one that's visually distinct, label it, and put it somewhere else so you don't overwrite it. Do this even if you have multiple drives in the system. Don't count on your ability to keep internal storage devices straight. You can skip this step if you're pulling the device straight out of the box.

Do you have a new/new-to-you/used Windows device that needs a fresh start? Here's the process I've refined for myself over the years to get the best, most usable device possible. Start with zero added crap like McAfee or manufacturer sales programs.
You'll need a couple of USB flash drives for this process. Grab one that's at least 16 GB (install media) and one that's at least 32 GB (data backup). If you're going to be doing this often, you can replace the install media flash drive with an IODD device. I've got one with a 1TB SSD with a bunch of Windows and Linux ISOs, a separate folder for drivers, and a little 1 GB FAT32 partition specifically for holding BIOS updates.

So this is a mini essay I wrote for my employers, to explain why I refuse to use AI tools at work. They have recently been pushing it and I wanted to make my position crystal clear and attempt to open up discussions. I'm not in a management position so don't have any voice when it comes to decision making. I also struggle to express myself verbally and miss out context.
I initially sent it to my manager on Tuesday. She then had a meeting with her manager and brought it up, and he suggested I send it to him and 2 members of the extended leadership team above him, who are directly below the CEO.
My managers managers response was very positive, he messaged me to say it was very powerful and he wanted to take the weekend to process.
Anyway it's not my best writing but here it is.

As *** leaders increase their push for employees to use AI tools, I would like to lay out the reasons why I refuse to do so. I feel the need to do this in order to show that I am not acting out of a fear of new technology, but as someone who understands technological progression and has been interested in this field for decades, studying virtual reality and AI at university 15 years ago and following the industry closely since. I also hope that this may convince you to pause and reflect, and commit to allowing every employee to choose for themselves if they wish to use AI tools, without being penalised or left behind should we choose not to.
I have always been very optimistic about what AI could bring us and how it could benefit our lives not just in the workplace, but also at home and for society in general. However, to borrow a phrase used often in online tech circles, ‘this is not the AI we were promised’.
Instead we have AI that is unreliable at best, and risking our lives and our environment at worst.
The environmental impact of data centres is huge. A recent report by the IEA (International Energy Agency) found that data centre energy usage had surged during 2025 and was set to continue.
“According to the report – Key Questions on Energy and AI – power consumption per AI task is declining rapidly, with efficiency improving at a rate unprecedented in energy history. However, more people are using AI, and energy-intensive uses – such as AI agents – are on the rise. As a result, electricity consumption from data centres is set to double by 2030, and power use from those focused on AI is poised to triple.”
The IEA article goes on to speculate that AI may drive the creation and large-scale adoption of greener tech, but we are not there yet and the current state of play is dangerous and damaging to our environment right now, regardless of future potential. Future potential does not cancel out current harm.
I do not wish to contribute to this.
In addition to the environmental impact the creation of new data centres is having a detrimental effect on neighbouring communities with the blatant disregard for them. For example, residents of a town in Michigan voted overwhelmingly to not have a 21 Million square feet data centre built close to their town, with the town commission also voting in favour to reject due to the impact it would have on the local environment, electricity demand and increased traffic. Related Digital (OpenAI, Stargate Initiative) successfully sued the town and are going ahead anyway.

These data centres are costing billions and billions. The people paying for them are well aware that they have enough money to be able to do whatever the hell they like while making promises of increased opportunities and future green tech. All while they risk destroying the communities surrounding them.

AI is now being used in war. The same companies that are used to summarise emails or generate a slide deck are being used in cyber defence.

The effect of regular use of AI tools on cognitive function is still being studied but so far the results are extremely concerning. I enjoy using the skills I’ve developed over the last 30 years. I enjoy figuring things out and learning new things. I enjoy putting my thoughts into words with my own voice. These are the things that motivate me.
I thoroughly believe that the more we rely on AI tools, the easier it will become to offload simple tasks to these tools and the temptation to have them do as much of our workload as possible is too great, especially when we are being told to use AI tools to increase our productivity.
“A new MIT study titled, Your Brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of Cognitive Debt when Using an AI Assistant for Essay Writing Task, has found that using ChatGPT to help write essays leads to long-term cognitive harm—measurable through EEG brain scans. Students who repeatedly relied on ChatGPT showed weakened neural connectivity, impaired memory recall, and diminished sense of ownership over their own writing. While the AI-gener”ated content often scored well, the brains behind it were shutting down.
I do not wish to be a victim of this.
Things I am also concerned about but have not written about here in great detail (or this would be 20 pages long) are;
‘Enshittification’ of the internet: can no longer trust search results, or that academic papers, news reports, images, videos and music are not AI created.

AI is a technology that I would love to be using, and it should be a natural progression of my career. I should relish digging in and getting to know how everything works, being creative and finding new ways to use it. That’s who I am. I would fully embrace it and advocate for it. But not in it’s current format, with it’s current harms, and it’s current masters. The likes of Elon Musk, Sam Altman and Jensen Huang are billionaires who do not live in the same reality as the rest of us, and do not have our best interests at heart. The AI models these people are enabling are not the AI we were promised. For all of the reasons outlined above I cannot in good conscience contribute by becoming a user. This is at the core of my ethics and my beliefs, and it would devastate me to be forced to take part. This may seem dramatic but I am just one of many, many people worldwide who are also refusing to take part and that number is growing day by day. I guess we are ‘conscientious objectors’.
It’s not just about an individuals personal use. One could argue that the amount of energy one person uses or their monetary contribution to AI companies from simple day to day workplace tasks is not great enough to be an issue. However, it is about collective use and about ethical standpoints. Do we, as a company with a mission to help people embrace greener technology, really want to contribute to all of these things? Sometimes the only power we have is to choose where our money goes. It’s something I do as an individual consumer and something that companies can do on a grander scale to take a stand and be on the right side. Yes, I understand the need to increase productivity and remain competitive but we were already on the right track before the push to use AI tools. I also believe it is a mistake to rely on them too much as subscription costs are set to soar and the ‘AI Bubble’ predictions are looking more and more likely. I think it’s far better to pause or greatly limit use, allow employees to decide they don’t wish to use it at all, and see what the state of play is in a year or two. ‘Fear of Missing Out’ is a very real phenomena that I sadly see playing out here.
I guarantee I am not the only one at *** who feels this way, but with the job market as it is right now (thanks to AI) it can be very risky to speak out. I know people in other companies who are being forced to use AI tools or risk losing their jobs and I would like to think that we are better than that at Pod, but this still feels risky. However I cannot stay silent any more and need to make my position, and my reasoning for this position crystal clear and hope that everything I have outlined can be given serious thought.

I have #Copilot Cowork do the "Promise layer" thing for me, & it's useful as an accountability tool. Two challenges are 1) Not everything I do or say is captured by the AI, which leads to...2) The AI can't/doesn't always know if I've already completed the task I promised to do so I get some small level of noise where it identifies commitments I've made but already fulfilled.
'Get on board or get left behind' can mean that if you refuse to use generative AI and/or LLM's to speed up your work, you will soon be working at a snails pace compared to your AI shagging colleagues. Deadlines will become tighter, time on task will be scrutinised and criticised, and your workload will increase.
I'm discovering this in my current role.
Taking 20 minutes (yep, just 20 minutes) to figure out an excel formula that wasn't working as intended has become the rallying cry of my (otherwise awesome) manager to try and convince me I should have just asked co-pilot initially. Now I have been given extra finance tasks (not in my job description) and tighter KPI's for daily tasks.
I will not be using #copilot or fucking #claude or #chatgpt or any of the other bullshit AI tools my employers are currently orgasming over.
They can try and discipline me, or even fire me. I look forward to how a company that is supposed to be ethical and green is going to argue it at the tribunal.

There are a lot of folk who are pissed off at Linus Torvalds, for allowing some of his maintainers to use large language models to assist in finding bugs.
The Head Programmer of the fantastic and Beautiful curl also uses a large language model in some form, to hunt for bugs, because both he and Greg from the Linux kernel, saw that the LLM used on GitHub is now suddenly much better at finding those pesky bugs.
Mind you, the only LLM I like is the one that runs locally on my low powered Android phone. That's a micro LLM

I'm glad generative artificial "intelligence" was not a thing yet during the vast majority of my career. A number of realizations arose while exploring generative Large Language Models…
Generative AI is based on massive theft from creatives, without consent, credit or compensation. Using gen-AI is asking a chatbot to spit out the combined efforts of ripped-off creatives. It is industrializing and devaluing human expression, artistry and craftsmanship. Creatives are losing their jobs and motivation because tech corporations unscrupulously absorb and exploit their work. If you appreciate art, support the artists, not the thieves of their labor.
Tech corporations are building more and more huge data centers for AI processing, consuming lots of internet bandwidth, energy, water and more, increasing scarcity, prices and emissions, degrading the already fragile environment.
Unless you're using a fully local AI configuration, every bit of data you submit contributes to the power and reach of corporations and governments, decreasing your privacy and security.
Generative AI enables deepfakes that are widely used for abuse, deception, cybercrime, misinformation and propaganda, polluting justice, science advancement and news report credibility.

A computer program is not source code. It is the combination of source code, related documents, and the mental understanding developed by the people who work with the code and documents regularly. In other words a computer program is a relational structure that necessarily includes human beings.
The output of a generative AI model alone cannot be a computer program in this sense no matter how closely that output resembles the source code part of some future possible computer program. That the output could be developed into a computer program over time, given the appropriate resources to do so, does not make it equivalent to a computer program.

This seems like a likely move given the rhetoric. On top of that, I can say that in the 2016-2019 timeframe when I was actively running a startup company, I had many conversations with venture capitalists who were very keen on investing in startups that promised to do this. The tech at the time was clearly not credible, but given the mania over generative AI I could see this perception changing. To be clear, I don't think data scientists can or should be replaced by LLMs. I'm saying that what matters to VCs is whether they believe it's close enough to possible to throw money into. That much has definitely changed.

That may sound odd, since these are clearly technological artifacts in the way we've come to understand technology, and they're being produced by what's commonly called the tech sector. However, there are at least two ways in which these artifacts differ markedly from what we usually (used to?) think of as "technology":
(1) They tend to have a deskilling effect. The English word "technology" ultimately derives from the Greek word "tekhnē", which can be interpreted as meaning skill or craft. It's very much about a human being's ability to perform a task. Yet much of generative AI is aimed at removing human beings from a task, or minimizing our involvement. In that sense generative AI is very much anti-tekhnē
(2) They tend to lie squarely in what Albert Borgmann called "the device paradigm". L.M. Sacasas has several nice takes on Borgmann's distinction between devices and focal things. By contrast, focal objects tend to invite you into fully experiencing the focal practices they enable, to experience the means and the ends. In particular, they tend not to be easy: you have to engage with and learn to use them. Guitars are an interesting example of focal objects. To be (I hope not overly) simplistic, devices dumb you down while focal objects train you up. Devices are anti-tekhnē, and to the extent that current generative AI is created and deployed in the device paradigm, it is too.
None of this means generative AI has to be anti-tekhnē. I do admit though that I struggle to see how to make it less device-y, at least as it's currently made and used (I do have a few half-formed thoughts along these lines but nothing worth sharing).

I don't want to use Copilot (1). It is bad and unethical technology. I don't want Copilot forced on me any more than I want other commercial products forced on me when I'm trying to do something else.
So I did what I usually do: make a uBlock Origin filter to hide the thing I don't want to see. Here's the filter to hide that Copilot box on Github:

They'll probably change the CSS and this rule will stop working, but for now it makes the offending box go away.
To use this, open the uBlock Origin settings in your web browser, choose My Filters, paste that string above in the box, and click Apply Changes. Refresh Github to verify it works.

This is something I'd expect because of anchoring. I'd expect a similar phenomenon when using generative AI to help with other kinds of ideation like writing or coding. Basically, your creative process gets stuck--anchored--on the first couple ideas. If you're generating those ideas with AI without taking account of this phenomenon, your overall process will tend to be less creative than if you hadn't used the AI. Surely there are ways to mitigate this effect but you have to be aware of it and practiced in those ways.

The influence of powerful imagery and rhetorics in promotional material for computing is neither new nor surprising. There is a longstanding tradition of overselling the latest technology, claiming it to be the next (industrial) revolution or promising that it will outperform human beings. With the passage of time it may become difficult to recognize these invented ideas and images that have acquired a life of their own and have become integrated as part of a historical narrative. However, this is not a simple straightforward process that replaces the human element in one or more specific phases of programming by the computer itself. Rather, practice adopts new techniques to assist with existing tasks and jobs. Such changes do not generalize easily, and using titles as like “coders”—or today’s “prompt engineers,”—while memorable, does not do justice to the subtle process of changing practice.

Generative AI could be an instance of what self-checkout or automated customer service phone trees are: what Brian Merchant ( @brianmerchant@mastodon.social ) dubs "shitty automation" in the first link, with a similar kind of self-defeating logic built into it from the start. If the only purpose of a technology is to cut labor costs for corporations, then there's a decent chance everyone, including the corporations deploying the technology, eventually suffers from it. One of the weirdest things to witness in this latest AI hype cycle is the enthusiastic deployment of a technology that may end up producing worse products and services at greater expense than the laid-off people who used to produce those products and services. It also threatens to leave behind a kind of technological detritus: even companies that recognize the cost and poor quality won't be able to remove it once it's entrenched. Why all the enthusiasm?
Obviously I have no way of knowing whether that's what comes to pass, but a lot of signs are pointing that way. I've already had a few conversations with people, including a CEO, who told me they felt like they had no choice but to deploy generative AI somehow, because all their customers were doing so. But like the most-photographed barn--which is the most-photographed barn because it's famous for being the most-photographed barn--this kind of justification is ephemeral white noise. You are putting yourself into a dangerous position by following it: this ouroboros will eat your business once it's done swallowing its own tail. Very strange to witness.

We find disconcerting trends for maintainability. Code churn -- the percentage of lines that are reverted or updated less than two weeks after being authored -- is projected to double in 2024 compared to its 2021, pre-AI baseline. We further find that the percentage of 'added code' and 'copy/pasted code' is increasing in proportion to 'updated,' 'deleted,' and 'moved 'code. Is anybody surprised by this? Maintenance is by far the biggest cost in software development. It is an ongoing cost that persists till the software reaches end of life.
