My view on the recent Codeberg drama:
https://gagliardoni.net/#20260724_codeberg_drama
Codeberg voting members have the right to decide the policy of their association, and I understand if a community is averse to anything that is AI- or Web3-related. I understand it, but I don't agree with it, because it's 2026, and if you still think you can just stick your head in the sand and wish for these ugly bad things to go away, well, I have bad news for you.
To me, this is a perfect recipe to relegate Codeberg to irrelevance. And we are already seeing the beginning of a new exodus.
Here is my conspiracy theory: the vote was pushed or manipulated from the inside by Big Tech. Whether this is true or not, one thing is sure: folks at Microsoft, GitHub, OpenAI etc. are now popping champagne.

I'll never be not amazed what is possible using only free software.
This will be the insides of a flight case, holding a DJ controller.
I'm using #FreeCAD for around ten years, learned and tried a few new techniques (for me) in this project anyway. Printing the parts takes longer than planning and designing. 🙂

I was about to transfer my Abject project to Codeberg but can't now.
Codeberg seems to be more aligned with the OSS compared to the FL in FLOSS.

#Software has become like #bureaucracy:
Nothing ever gets fixed.
But new rules, new features, keep getting accumulated. Until you drown in them.
That includes #FLOSS.
Today I talked about GNU Guix at MashhadLUG, our local Linux User Group. I’ve published the presentation files on GitHub. (Sadly, GitLab is unavailable for my country due to sanctions, and Codeberg is blocked by the Iranian government, otherwise I would have preferred to host them there.)
I’m a big fan of Emacs and Org mode. This presentation was written in Org and delivered using org-tree-slide. It was a really enjoyable experience :)

I think the most important question is: why does anyone comply with what one incurious, self-centered, and self-important man, Linus Torvalds, says?
Why is that most important? Because Linux does not belong to Linus Torvalds. It belongs to the world. Torvalds only gets to dictate if the people who are best-positioned to take that power from him fail to do so. From where I sit (as an outsider), he should have been removed from the project, or at least have his dictatorial power removed, long ago, and the primary problem is that there is no structure or will to actually do that.
Under these conditions Linux is a hierarchical, and therefore right-wing, project. The project allows a single man to dictate the future evolution of a global good. Let's drop the illusion that it is "free" or "open" till that changes.
It was a great pleasure to write up this post about the #Codeberg's recent votes with respect to LLMs and the impact that LLM have on #FLOSS more broadly, together with @Gusted and @fnetX:

Codeberg community voted to ban AI-generated code in repositories:
https://codeberg.org/Codeberg/org/pulls/1253#issuecomment-19820434
I am a regular Codeberg user, left GitHub in 2019, and co-maintain Libre projects that saw very little if none at all AI in development.
And still I think this decision will backfire badly.
I, like most of Codeberg users, was not even aware that this discussion was in place, did not vote. This only passed because of the anti-AI Luddite crowd. Which, mind you, has a point, I have very conflicting feelings about AI myself, and I think that the current trajectory is quite worrying. But this is just a knee-jerk reaction that has clearly not been thought of well enough.
I applaude the philosophy, or the intent if you want, of not having Codeberg turn into another SlopHub. But this is fairy-tale wishful thinking. There is no way to reliably detect AI-generated code at scale in 2026.
I can already smell the mutual witch hunts across projects and "camps".
Anyway, I hope I'm wrong.

if you are a member of Codeberg you should have received numerous polls for voting on several topics. I almost forgot, but just voted.
So consider this my public service announcement for all @Codeberg members.
Don't forget to vote!
PS: Dear Codeberg organization thanks for all the hard work! A minor suggestion: please send out reminders for voting & make the voting period a bit longer especially around the holidays. Keep up the good work 💪
I don't know who needs to hear this, but #Linux is political. You personally might not be into it for the politics, which is fine I guess, but anything that pushes back against America's global tech monopoly is a political project. It can't not be.
Just saying.
A curious irony in the fact a great many of the free and open source platforms championing digital sovereignty are themselves utterly infrastructurally dependent on big tech apparatus GitHub, itself owned (and mined) by the ruthless and closed source market monopolist Microsoft.
We're gaining ground fast, but we've still got a way to go in the truly sovereign platform space. To use is to support, and that means any point along the supply chain.

Doch hinter all dem stehen Menschen.
Denn genau davon lebt unsere Gemeinschaft.

People think the #Matrix was about robots. It wasn't. It was about operating systems.
#Windows is the blue pill.
You take it, and everything stays comfortable. Pretty icons. Friendly sounds. A setup wizard asking if you want to save your soul to the #cloud. Updates appear at the worst possible moment like a Marvel post-credit scene nobody asked for. Your #PC reboots. You cry. #Microsoft thanks you for improving your experience.
#Linux is the red pill.
You wake up. You see how deep the #RabbitHole goes.
At first, it is terrifying. The #terminal stares at you like Darth Vader asking if you know the power of the #CommandLine. You type one wrong character and feel like you accidentally launched nuclear missiles.
But then something changes. You realize your #computer actually belongs to you.
No ads in the Start Menu. No #AI assistant spying harder than a reality TV producer.
No mysterious background process eating half your #RAM like Pac-Man after three energy drinks.
You choose what gets installed. You choose when #updates happen. You choose what your #desktop looks like.
You are Neo.
Windows #users are still sitting in their pods, downloading the latest mandatory #update called KB-Whatever-Again, wondering why their printer suddenly speaks ancient Sumerian.
Linux is not perfect. Sometimes Wi-Fi drivers behave like a side quest in Dark Souls.
Sometimes you spend two hours fixing a problem just to feel smarter than everyone else.
But that is the point. The red pill was never about comfort. It was about #freedom.
And freedom means occasionally reading a forum post written by a Finnish guy in 2007 who solved your #problem and vanished forever like a #Jedi master.

#oss #foss #floss #bigtech #gafam
I think I've finally been able to condense what irks me about the @conservancy guidelines on #GenAI use for #FLOSS.
Out of 14, only the first 2 relate positively towards not using these systems. The others are accommodations and even encouragement.
That's ... remarkably biased and doesn't adequately reflect or even acknowledge the potential and real harms associated with them.
The SFC used to be fairly principled. This does not appear to be.

Some people think that #LLM usage costs rising will start undoing some of the harm caused by the #AI hype. I don't think that's really going to help that much.
I'm not even talking about all the projects that were ensloppified and enshittified already. I'm not talking about all the technical debt. I'm not talking about all the forks that will have to be maintained forever. I'm not talking of all the projects that were abandoned because of burnout, or because they were only hype-oriented. And I'm not talking about all the corporations that will continue submitting slop.
I'm talking about the loss of trust. After all, we're not talking of people who realized they were wrong and are sorry. We're not talking of people realizing that it was wrong to forfeit ethics and morals in the name of "productivity". We're talking of people who are jumping ships because their previous approach turned out not to be profitable anymore. We're talking of gamblers who left the casino because they went broke. They aren't sorry that they gambled; they are sorry that they've lost. And they'd be happy to do it again at the nearest opportunity.
So, I'm sorry to say, but #FreeSoftware is never going to be the same again. A lot of people have shown their true colors, and I won't forget that.
Happy to see my tax money well-spent 😊🥳

The former #CEO of #Microsoft once described #Linux as a #cancer that was ruining Microsoft's #business. In the end, it's the other way around. Microsoft is the cancer that is infecting Linux and commercializing it without respecting the #philosophy of #free #software.
source: linuxiac.com/microsoft-opens-t…
Microsoft's #Azure #cloud runs on Linux #servers. Microsoft generates the majority of its #revenue through cloud #services. In other words, it makes use of free software—specifically, from the open-source community project—without contributing to or supporting it in a meaningful way. On the contrary, Microsoft has been fighting the spread of Linux on the #desktop with #Windows from the very beginning. However, the company has learned how to profitably market free software. Unfortunately, this is a sign that die-hard capitalists are incapable of learning. Their greed for profit blinds them to the common good. Since Windows now accounts for only about 5% of Microsoft’s business model, it is used solely to keep customers within the Microsoft ecosystem and sell them cloud services. Meanwhile, Windows 11 is getting worse and worse, partly due to the use of AI.
The only company worse than that is #Nvidia, which also uses Linux but nevertheless actively prevents the development of decent open-source drivers for Nvidia #hardware. So while the #company understands the benefits of Linux, it still actively resists contributing to this #collaborative #project.
Capitalism in its final stages—and, unfortunately, one of the reasons why humanity is heading so rapidly toward the #collapse of #civilization.

#Gentoo is still one of the bright outposts in #FLOSS where human work is valued and #LLM contributions are banned. However, sometimes I feel that this matters very little.
After all, Gentoo is a distribution. While it has its own value, it cannot exist without all the software it is shipping. It makes no sense in isolation.
And let's be honest, I don't think you can avoid slop today. We are trying our best to sieve out the worst: the copywashing chardet, the vibecoded NIH Perl crypto packages… but it's just that.
As someone who bumps Python packages, let me tell you this: LLMs are omnipresent. I notice Claude in commit logs, I notice the blasphemy of agent instructions all over the place… and there's probably much more than I don't notice. With many core components giving in, you can't avoid it without literally freezing on old, vulnerable versions, or spending hours looking for alternatives or creating them.
FLOSS is dead. People don't care. They don't have conscience. All they care about is the sick idea of "productivity", i.e. generating more slop.
The few of us who do care can do very little. We will continue doing our best until they kill us (as they're literally slowly killing the whole humankind). But that's it. Maybe it will pass once the bubble pops, maybe it won't. Either way, the damage is beyond repair. We will never be able to trust one another like we did. We will never again be a community building a better world.
It's just like everything nowadays. It's hard to find a good washing machine (one that will actually be repairable), good shoes (that won't fall apart shortly after the warranty expires), good food. You need lots of money, and even then you have to sieve through all the scammers who just sell the same shit with higher profit margin. #OpenSource is just another branch of business where people are trying to "sell" you shit, and don't care anymore if it explodes in your face. They don't even care if they're actually making a profit.
How free #OpenSource software tools bailed out a disaster recovery team in #Turkey
https://www.fsf.org/bulletin/2023/spring/ground-zero-navigating-in-freedom
from #FreeSoftwareFoundation Bulletin
Spring 2023
At ground zero, #OpenStreetMap provided us with the mapping that we very much needed. When I was finally...deployed on the field, nobody was yet able to navigate properly. Along with much of our critical equipment, our dedicated GPS devices were sent somewhere else because the location of the earthquake's epicenter was misjudged, and almost all the personnel were trying to use their data connection to download the same maps over and over again in order to respond to every direction given by the command center. It was in this setting that I introduced a powerful free software tool called "OsmAnd~" (#OSM for Android), along with pre-downloaded maps that I had on my handheld device, which I was using to flawlessly navigate through the city.
When others saw this, it was received by the group as "magic."
AH, GhostBSD decided to go through with their planned switch to the racist anti-DEI XOrg fork by default.
I am becoming convinced that at some-point we've fucked up #FLOSS as a community. It may have been a mistake to believe ethical computing's primary and chief emphasis should be compliance with the free software definition. When ethics in computing is such a multi variable problem in actuality.
AND now we're just struggling with the problems born of that thinking, all the damn time.
There is more free software than ever, you can't throw a rock in some places without hitting something running the linux kernel. However, so much of this ecosystem is devoid of real ethical values.
I am becoming convinced that at some-point we've fucked up #FLOSS as a community.Indeed. The free software community was about one topic, free software. And when we stuck to just that one topic, we all agreed, and we made some great things together. The mistake seems to have been to introduce other topics into free software to disagree over.
Suddenly we had to be "diverse", but that only introduced something to fight over. What kind of diversity do we want or need? Diverse thought? No, that would include people that "we" disagree with. Diverse color? Kinda racist to bring skin color into a community dedicated to only free software, but that seemed to have happened nonetheless.
Then we had to be "ethical", and infighting started to happen on what is and is not ethical, and how we should or should not support it. Currently its fighting about whether mandatory age checks are ethical (protip: they're not).
It seems that whenever people bring in things that are not free software into the free software community, it just brings divisiveness. To me, that seems to be the core issue. The free software community should stick to caring about free software, that is what unites us. You can keep your skin color, gender, ethics, whatever, to yourself, there are other communities to talk about that kind of stuff.
Rather than focusing on things to divide us, focus on the one thing that free software is about.
Some big news regarding mobile OSes:
First, Graphene OS has confirmed a partnership with a large OEM to bring support to non-Pixel devices (Snapdragon SoC):
https://piunikaweb.com/2025/10/13/grapheneos-ending-pixel-exclusivity-new-oem/
This is good news, but IMHO it only delays the unavoidable demise of free AOSP-based projects since Google is now finally pulling the rug.
Second, the FSF announced Librephone, an initiative to bring real freedom to mobile devices:
https://www.fsf.org/news/librephone-project
This is also good, but it must be taken in the right perspective: Librephone, as far as I understand it, is not a new mobile OS, but rather an initiative to open-source existing proprietary firmware blobs. AOSP-based open source OSes like Lineage, Graphene, and even /e/OS, will hopefully benefit from this initiative, by being able to replace binary blobs with open-source firmware. But they still remain AOSP-based solutions, and therefore bound to the Google ecosystem.
There are two problems here that really need to be addressed.
The first one is political. Legislators and citizens must come to acknowledge that a democratic society where the full mobile ecosystem is in the hands of a corporate duopoly is not acceptable.
The second one is technological: AOSP is not a fully free OS, it's a trojan horse, a trap set by Google years ago that is springing right now. We need to move away from Android and embrace full GNU/Linux solutions, or even something completely new, at this point I don't even care. I've heard good opinions of Postmarket OS. Any feedbacks here?
Say what you want about Richard Stallman, but he saw this coming.
