Highlanders Times Three

Host Angi Morgan

Enchantment, Possession and Deception... Highlanders at their best. Let's give a big welcome to Madeline Martin who's made us fall in love a little more with that enchanting land of Scotland. This is her third release. You can catch more about her on previous interviews.

ENCHANTMENT OF A HIGHLANDER

Add to your Goodreads Want List

The sweeping historical romance that began with Deception of a Highlander, and continued with Possession of a Highlander, reaches its dazzling conclusion in this scorcher set on the Scottish plains.

Alec MacLean returns home after a decade to find his recently deceased father has let his inheritance fall to ruin. As the new laird, it’s Alec’s responsibility to rebuild the castle and restore the lands. He must also regain the people’s trust after having abandoned them so long ago, a feat not easily done when he fears he’s plagued with the same darkness as his father.

Celia escaped the North Berwick witch trials at a young age, surviving because of the sacrifice of her beloved caretaker. She’s made a life for herself in the wilds of Scotland where no laird rules, a life where she heals for coin, a life without love so she can never feel the hurt of loss again.

When the new laird comes back to claim his land, his determination to restore order threatens everything Celia has worked so hard to gain, especially with the undeniable attraction sizzling between them. Together, they will face all challenges, from the tangle of their own damaged pasts to the fire-fueled witch hunts sweeping the Isle of Mull. Together, they will find that he best way to overcome darkness and war is through the undeniable light of love.

MADELINE MARTIN Madeline Martin lives in Jacksonville, Florida with her two daughters (AKA Oldest Minion and Youngest Minion) along with their two cats: Sketchy Cat who stares at walls and eats fuzz and Lap Cat who has a shoe fetish and enjoys Kung Pow peanuts. All shenanigans are detailed regularly on Twitter.

Madeline graduated from Flagler College with a degree in Business Administration and works for corporate America. Her hobbies include rock climbing, running, doing crazy races (like Mud Runs and Color Runs) and just about anything exciting she can do without getting nauseous. She's also a history fan (really more of a full on history dork) and loves to blog about random curiosities from her research.

After living in Europe for over a decade, Madeline enjoys traveling overseas whenever she can. Her favorite place to visit thus far: Scotland.

QUESTIONS FROM MADELINE’S FANS
Where do you write?
MADELINE: I have a desk in the living room I sit at where I can keep an eye out in case the minions need anything. I very rarely write when they are awake as they very rarely don’t need me when they are. ;)

What is your favorite writing beverage or talisman?
MADELINE: Wine! Is this a trick question? ;)

Who or what or both is your inspiration?
MADELINE: The other authors I know. There is so much talent there and so much wonderful support. Someone is always available to answer questions or help share a new release. It’s the most incredible community I’ve ever belonged to and is filled with amazing people.

What books will you be coming out with next? What kind of stories are in your head? Spill!
MADELINE: I’m starting my next series, the Broken Dolls about English noblewomen who fall from the good graces of court and get swept up into a secret spy network of women who train in an abandoned castle in Scotland.
I’m just wrapping up the first in the series (the name of the book is still undetermined) right now and anticipate getting it to beta readers today! The hero, Connor Grant, is the trainer for the Broken Dolls and also the king’s personal assassin. The heroine, Ariana Fitzroy, was an orphaned earl’s daughter who gets caught cheating at cards. Together they fight to reclaim the land Connor lost when his father was murdered.

Has there been a real person in the historical research that you have done that you found really inspiring?
MADELINE: More than I could possibly count. I have to say Ann Boleyn – she was intelligent and shrewd and got Henry VIII to fall so hard in love with her that she brought the entire religion of England to its knees. Not saying it was a good thing of her to do, but I’m definitely saying a woman with that kind of power is one I’d love to meet!

What is your favorite wine?
MADELINE: Pinot Noir. I’d love to say some really fancy brand, but I’m not really picky. Inside me, there’s the well-traveled part that is craving the wine knowledge for a deeper appreciation, but she’s always drown out by the cheap lush who is glad to be cool drinking the stuff that costs $5 a bottle. ;)

How many books are in your head right now?
MADELINE: Nine active one with a couple lingering in the background.

QUESTIONS FROM ANGI
ANGI: In your first interview you admitted to getting lost in a story everyday through audio books. Is there a special narrator that you adore?
MADELINE: Nope. But I will say it’s amazing how much a narrator can make a decent book amazing and how a bad one can completely ruin a good book. Fortunately there are a lot of good narrators out there.

ANGI: Hugh Jackman or Gerard Butler?
MADELINE: Hugh Jackman

ANGI: What's your most favorite thing to do in your state?
MADELINE: Go to theme parks! J We’re two hours away from Orlando, so every year I buy annual passes for the minions. The previous year was Legoland, this year was Sea World and Aquatica – and next year is Disney World. J We go so many times through the year that it’s worth it and we always have a blast!

Also the minions are well behaved. J They earn allowance through chores (they only get paid for what they do - $1 for unloading the dishwasher, $.50 for clean rooms every night, etc), so they know when we go to the parks, I’ll pay for food, but the rest is on them. When they’re allowance is gone, so too is their spending money. They know the drill now and never complain. It makes getting to go so often way more financially feasible J (and WAY less whining and meltdowns)

ANGI: What do you like about the hero of your book?
MADELINE: Alec is one of my favorite heroes. He’s a super alpha who is really tortured by the fear he has the same kind of darkness his father possessed. I think what I love best about him is all the good inside his fear won’t let him see.

ANGI: Sand or Snow?
MADELINE: Sand (but it all needs to come off before I get in the car LOL)

ANGI: Superman or Batman?
MADELINE: Batman. (but really, I was always more into the Xmen) J

ANGI: What drinks or snacks are always on your desk when you’re writing?
MADELINE: Wine or coffee. LOL Though I try to mix some water in there at some point….

ANGI: Are you a Star Wars fan? Favorite thing about the reboot?
MADELINE: I AM! J I love strong heroines and absolutely loved the reboot as a result. The minions found it very empowering as well.

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: What’s one thing from your bucket list?
MADELINE’S GOTTA ANSWER: I’ve been so incredibly fortunate to do a lot of overseas traveling and have even stayed overnight in several castles in Europe. That said, I’d love to stay overnight in an American castle and would love to do it at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC.

MADELINE WANTS TO KNOW: When I wrote Enchantment of a Highlander, I did extensive research on herbal healing remedies used in Scotland then and how the witch trials truly went down. I love getting into historical research.

Possession or Deception...Give Us Highlanders!

POSSESSION OF A HIGHLANDER

Brianna Lindsay’s grip on the inheritance that is rightly hers hangs by a thread. If the town finds out her father has died, Brianna will be forced into marriage with her loathsome cousin, Lord Robert, and will lose all of Edzell Castle and its lands. To protect her home, she’ll have to trust a complete stranger, a brooding Highland barbarian who sweeps into Edzell with a small retinue and insists on replacing her Captain of the Guard. He proves his worth by defeating her men and she has no choice but to accept his offer.

Though his motives are suspect, Colin MacKinnon has nobility in his blood and good intentions in coming to Edzell. He seeks his own kingdom, one to rival his father’s, and sets out to conquer Brianna in the best way he knows how—with seduction.
Brianna never thought of all the wealth she protects, the one thing she has left completely vulnerable is her heart. Colin never thought that of everything he stands to achieve, he might have to face the unexpected pain of loss. Together, they must navigate a treacherous world of spies and intrigue, of legacy and fidelity, of love and betrayal, to find what is truly worth possessing.

THE HIGHLAND Q&A
ANGI: What’s your favorite vice of Colin from POSSESSION OF A HIGHLANDER?
MADELINE: He’s a total sucker for Brianna. At one point he’s keeping a secret he thinks will hurt her. Brianna realizes this and employs a notorious vixen to educate her on seduction. Let’s just say poor Colin doesn’t stand a chance.

ANGI: Benedict Cumberbatch or Chris Pine?
MADELINE: Ooooooooh – Chris Pine!

ANGI: Who’s your favorite Scotsman?
MADELINE: My favorite Scotsman are mostly book boyfriends and it all depends on which book I’m reader or writing. LOL My favorite book boyfriend I’ve read is Jamie Fraser (shocking, right?), my favorite book boyfriend I’ve written is Alec from my next novel, Enchantment of a Highlander. He’s so tortured and such a stoic, quiet mega alpha male.

ANGI: What’s your favorite meal?
MADELINE: Filet mignon with french fries soaking in all the briny, rich steak juice. Pair it with a nice pinot noir and finish it with crĆØme brulee. Ahhhh…. I’m 5,000 calories worth of happy.

ANGI: What’s your favorite theme park food?
MADELINE: Sea World has the most decadent caramel covered popcorn. The bag is $5 and I can eat such a massive amount, it’s truly shameful.

ANGI: Destination…anywhere in the world and why?
MADELINE: I love Scotland. Not only is it beautiful and the people are so friendly, but I find it so inspiring to my writing. It’s like all those little gaps I couldn’t quite put my finger on get filled out with lush detail.

ANGI: Where do you read and how often?
MADELINE: I actually listen to almost all my books. I work a full time job in Corporate American and am a single mom juggling all that with a writing career. I wish I had more time to read, but a second best is popping in my ear buds and tuning in to Audible. It’s kind of exciting – this series is actually going to be on Audible. I heard from the narrator two weeks ago confirming pronunciations, etc. It’s so awesome to think that the medium with which I get my book fix will soon have my books in their lists!

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
MADELINE: Dangerous Beauty. It’s a beautifully poetic story about a young woman in Venice and the nobleman she loves, but cannot marry because his station is so much higher than hers. Her mother was a courtesan and teaches her to be one as well. The story is so very romantic and you’ll find yourself sighing at the gorgeously romantic dialogue.

ANGI: What's your most favorite thing to do when you travel?
MADELINE: Plan! I’m uber Type A and going through all the travel guides and trip advisor recommendations is like my travel cat nip. I love nailing down all the perfect places to visit and book and eat at, so I know wherever I go, I’m getting the best cultural experience my research can afford me.

ANGI: Hiking Boots or Dancing Heels?
MADELINE: That’s a hard question, I love both!! Let’s go with hiking boots in the day and dancing heels at night.

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: What is your favorite thing about Orlando? Besides the memories you make with your minions?
MADELINE’s GOTTA ANSWER: It has to be Downtown Disney. It’s free to go to, but has all these incredible interactive opportunities. The Lego story has lego go cars you can make and race, there are water fountains that shoot water from the ground where the minions run and try not to get wet, and then there’s the Ghirardelli ice cream shop.

I think one of the best memories from there was when OldestMinion and I joined in a dancing competition by accident and made it all the way to the final round! We had to dance together in front of hundreds of people who had stopped to watch. OldestMinion was super nervous, but still danced her heart out and was rewarded later when a much bigger kid stopped her and complimented her awesome moves. I’ve never seen OldestMinion smile so big.

DECEPTION OF A HIGHLANDER
To pay a seemingly impossible debt, Mariel Brandon has become a spy for Aaron, one of England’s deadliest minds. Aaron’s latest mission for the sharp-witted and daring Mariel is to find two people in a heavily fortified castle on the Isle of Skye, a castle headed by the clan MacDonald and the powerful Kieran. Mariel is to seduce Kieran and get him to take her to Skye. If she succeeds, Aaron promises to let Mariel’s young brother go, and to free both of them from their debt.

If she fails, her brother will die.

What she doesn’t count on is craving Kieran MacDonald almost immediately upon meeting him. Now Mariel must keep a secret from Kieran—one that could get them both killed—as she tries to form a plan that will save her brother, get her out from under Aaron’s thumb once and for all, and keep her in Kieran’s strong arms forever.

GET TO KNOW MADELINE
ANGI: How often to you get lost in a story?
MADELINE: Daily. I confess between having a full time job and being a single mom, I’m pretty short on time. About a year ago, I discovered audiobooks and I’ve been an avid reader-listener since. At least once a day I find myself lost in a different kind of story from women’s fiction to romance to YA to (one of my favorites) zombie apocalypse. It’s amazing the element a reader can add to an already incredible story. I can tear through a book every three or four days and I absolutely love it.

Me & Daddy
ANGI: Can you tell us about a real-life hero you’ve met?
MADELINE: My dad. It’s a cheesy, Miss America kind of answer, but I can’t help it. My dad served in the Army for over twenty years, but it wasn’t just the places he went and the things he did that made him a hero. Overhearing how his men spoke in admiration of his commitment to his platoon and to each of them, witnessing the raw determination he showed toward every obstacle he faced, being inspired by how hard he worked and how fit he kept – these were the things that make him a hero in my eyes.

I remember being a little girl and eating my breakfast while he stretched and did a series of abs after coming back from a run. Flash forward twenty years and my oldest daughter sat eating her breakfast while I stretched and did a series of abs after coming back from my run. Now she is starting to run races too. He’s a hero and he’s an inspiration, not just for me, but for future generations.

ANGI: What’s your favorite cartoon character?
MADELINE: Belle. I think most avid readers identify with her the most. Not only was I a bookworm, I was brunette in a world that seemed to power-sell blonde dolls and toys, and, well, I was a bit odd too. When Disney released Beauty and the Beast, it was almost like they were saying all of that was not only just OK – it was wonderful. Belle was actually the inspiration for the heroine in my next book, Possession of a Highlander.

ANGI: What do you like about the hero of your book?
MADELINE: I love that Kieran is an alpha male with insecurities he’s able to hide well from others. Not only does he carry the burden of having failed loved ones, he’s had to take on a lairdship he never felt was supposed to be his. Yet never does he come across as weak or indecisive. He is a strong leader who puts others before himself. And also he’s really hot.

Oldest Minion, Madeline & Youngest Minion
ANGI: Would you rather be in a Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?
MADELINE: Action Adventure, hands down. Unless the Fairy Tale has bodies…and a lot of twists and turns…and a princess who can wield a dagger…and a hero who wears a kilt… Yeah, I’ll just stick with Action Adventure. Also, this reminds me of what Youngest Minion said while we were watching Cinderella: You know, Fairy Godmothers seem like a really good thing, but really – they’re kinda creepy.

ANGI: What is your best wish come true?
MADELINE: I’d have to say being published. This has been such an indescribably wonderful ride and the outpour of support from friends and family has been just amazing. I’ve been working toward this for several years – waking up at 4:30 in the morning to write, sacrificing my weekends for workshops and writing. When I first got my printed book and held it in my hand, I got so choked up and remember thinking, “This is the product of determination and dreams.”

ANGI: What's your most favorite thing to do in your state?
MADELINE: Go to Orlando. Every year, I buy an annual pass to one of the major parks. It’s really affordable because the minions and I just drive there that morning, stay all day, then drive home that night. It’s made for an incredible collection of memories and always leaves something to look forward to.

ANGI: What is your biggest vice?
MADELINE: Junk food. I eat really healthy about 90% of the time, but it’s because I force myself. I love, love, love bad food – especially candy. On my mom’s side of the family, we all have a sweet tooth and every woman knows how to make a special fudge recipe. It’s almost like a rite of passage sort of thing – when you can make a successful batch of fudge, you’re officially a Saxon woman. I always make it at writing retreats/get togethers. Everyone calls it Saxon Fudge, which most people claim they say sounds like “Sex and Fudge”. Whatever – it’s awesome and it always a huge hit at parties!

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: I see on your website that you like to cycle. I vividly remember the first time I was on a mountain bike trail. Got any good stories you can share?
MADELINE’s GOTTA ANSWER:
Me & Ava
I’m going to preface this reply with a disclaimer – I’m kind of a hot mess. My best friend, Ava Milone, talked me into doing a 50 mile mountain bike race called I-Did-A-Ride. I’d never done mountain biking before we started training and Oh my was it a wild experience. I flew off the bike (multiple times), ran into bushes, took out small trees and even fell into a sand burr patch (only to discover I’m allergic to them). I have a pic somewhere of me covered in about a thousand sand burrs, laughing.

After all those months of training, I did the I-Did-A-Ride. I won’t share my time because it was shameful, but I did stop my forward momentum on a fall with my face on a tree stump (I’m thinking I can list that as a super power somehow, right?). It was a lot of work, but it was such an incredible and rewarding experience that resulted in the best Zaxby’s after I’d ever eaten in my life.
