Every HearMe comparison, in one place

Six sites, one difference that matters.

Many sites offer random chat with strangers, and the best-known ones put you in a video call. This page compares five of them with HearMe, which does something none of them do. It leaves the camera out entirely. Voice and text, anonymous, no sign-up, with an always-open General room for when the queue is quiet.

No sign-up. No video. Free to start.

Competitor details are their publicly documented features at the time of writing and can change. HearMe's column describes the product as it works today. OmeTV, Chatroulette, Monkey and Emerald Chat cells were checked on their own sites and app store listings in October 2026; a dash means their pages do not say. Chatrandom's site could not be read and no official app listing was found, so its column is blank.

What happened after Omegle

People who look for an Omegle-style site usually want one of two things: a text chat with interest tags and no sign-up, or a video chat. Most of the well-known sites on this page are video chats. A text chat you can use from a library or a bus, and a voice call with no camera, is the gap HearMe is built for. The Omegle alternative page goes into the text-mode comparison in detail.

OmeTV and Chatroulette: the video-first pair

These are the furthest from HearMe. OmeTV's rules say your face must always be visible in the frame, with text messages beside the video; Chatroulette shows you photos of possible partners and starts a video chat when you both agree, and its mobile apps let you switch to text. Both are built around the camera. If you liked Omegle for the camera, they are the direct replacements. If you liked it in spite of the camera, see HearMe vs OmeTV and HearMe vs Chatroulette.

Monkey: video with a login

Monkey is random video and text chat with an Android app and a web version, and its FAQ says it uses a one-tap social login before you start. It pairs people by interest tags, and its paid Monkey Plus adds a region filter. HearMe is a different pace: no timer, no camera, no login, and nothing to install. The Monkey alternative page covers the differences for anyone who wants the conversation without the camera.

Emerald Chat and Chatrandom: interest tags and filters

Emerald Chat has text chat, interest matching and group text chatrooms alongside video, and a karma system for users. We could not read Chatrandom's own pages in October 2026, so we make no claim about it; check its pages for its filters and text options. HearMe overlaps with both on text and filters and differs on everything else: no video at all, mic-only voice, rooms that only appear when people are in them, and free match history so a good conversation is not lost. What HearMe does that none of them do

  • No video, as a design decision rather than a toggle. The site never requests a camera, so nobody can pressure you to turn one on.
  • Voice with nothing else. A mic-only call is a phone call with a nickname, and every call is private. There is no public voice mode.
  • One room, honest count. General is always on and the number on it is the real one; nothing is listed as busy when it is empty.
  • A quiet queue that tells the truth. The waiting screen shows a wait line based on real waits at this hour, offers to ring you when someone arrives, and points you to the General room or to text chat instead of a fake match.
  • Honest numbers. No inflated 'online now' banner. If four people are in a room, it says four.
  • Free to talk, always, with no daily limit and no account. A free account adds friends and DMs; premium buys filters, priority in matching and a badge, never the ability to take part.

What the others do that HearMe does not

Fairness matters, so here is the other side. If you want video, HearMe is the wrong site and will stay the wrong site. The video-first sites may have larger pools at some hours; check their sites for what they show. Monkey's fast one-tap matching suits some people. Emerald's karma system gives you a reputation to build, which HearMe does not offer beyond an anonymous rank. Several of them have native apps; HearMe runs in the browser and is added to your home screen instead.

If those trade-offs read as acceptable, start with a text chat or a voice call. If they do not, the sites above are a search away and this page will have saved you the trial.

Why people look for an alternative to the big random chat sites

People rarely leave a random chat site for one dramatic reason. More often there is a short list of things they wish were different: a camera that is switched on by default, an account to make before the first hello, no clean way out of a bad conversation, or no sign that a person reads a report. This page does not say any particular site fails at these. Each site's own pages tell you what it does. What follows is a list of what a person may be looking for, and what HearMe does about each item.

What a person may want, and what HearMe does
You wantOn HearMe
No camera at allNo video mode on any page. Voice is mic-only and private 1:1
No sign-up before the first helloA nickname starts you. A free account is optional
A clean way outNext in one tap, Block, and Report to a person
A human reading reportsReports are read by a person; a reported call sends only the last 60 seconds, deleted after 7 days unless a moderator confirms the report as child safety or under 18; then it is kept as evidence for one year
Voice without being seenCalls are mic-only and are not recorded
Something to do when the queue is quietThe General room with its real count, a ring when someone arrives, and other rooms listed only when at least three people were active in the last hour

How to read the compare pages

Each of the pages linked above compares one site with HearMe on the same eleven rows: video, voice, text, sign-up, interest matching, country filter, rooms, friends, recording, platform and price. The HearMe column is identical on every page because the product is; the other column is written for that site specifically. Where a competitor does something HearMe does not, the page says so.

Competitor details are their publicly documented features at the time of writing. They change, and if you find a row that is out of date, the contact link in the footer is the place to say so.

Frequently asked questions

Is HearMe free?

Yes. Text chat, voice chat, rooms and your recent match history are free with no daily limit and no account. Premium adds filters, priority in matching, a longer match history and a badge.

Does HearMe need an account?

No. Pick a nickname and start; an account only becomes useful if you want friends and DMs, and it is free.

Are these sites safe?

Each site describes its own moderation; read it before you start. HearMe runs an under-18 safety check on every message, reviews reports with a person, never records calls, and is 18+ only. Check each site's own policy before using it.

What is the best Omegle alternative without video?

HearMe is built specifically for that: anonymous text and voice chat with no camera on the site at all, no sign-up, interest matching and an always-open General room.

Does HearMe have an app?

No install is needed. HearMe runs in the browser on any phone and can be added to the home screen.

Which Omegle alternatives do not need sign-up?

Which sites have text chat like Omegle's text mode?

HearMe and Emerald Chat both have real text modes with interest matching. OmeTV runs text beside the video, Chatroulette says you can switch to text chat in its mobile apps, and Monkey offers text chat beside video. We could not read Chatrandom's pages, so check them yourself.

Is there an Omegle alternative with voice only and no camera?

Yes. HearMe has mic-only voice chat and text chat, and no video mode anywhere. Every voice call is private between the two people on it.

Is HearMe 18+ only?

Yes, HearMe is for adults, 18+. Read each other site's own age rules before using it; this page does not describe them.
