One country, one clock, and a phone in your hand.

If you want to talk with strangers in India, the useful questions are practical ones: when is somebody likely to be there, which language do you ask for, and what does a call do to your data pack. This page answers those for HearMe, a free site where you pick a nickname, tap Start and get one person at a time by text or by voice. There is no camera mode at all. Below you will find India's clock set against the UK, the US, Pakistan and the Philippines, the evening pattern we have seen in our own data so far (with its limits spelled out), and a plain account of safety late at night. HearMe is for adults, 18+.

One clock for a whole country

India runs on a single time, Indian Standard Time, which is UTC+5:30. It does not change in summer, so the figure on your phone in Delhi, Chennai and Guwahati is the same all year. So only the other person's offset ever moves.

The half hour is what trips people up, since most of the world sits on whole-hour offsets. The tables in the next section do the arithmetic for the evening hours.

How the Indian evening lines up with other countries

Here are the offsets themselves, worked out for 2026. The UK is on British Summer Time (UTC+1) from 29 March to 25 October and on GMT the rest of the year. The US and Canada are on daylight time from 8 March to 1 November. Pakistan and the Philippines keep the same time all year.

The second table shows the clock elsewhere at each Indian hour, summer time first and winter time second.

Two worked examples. At 11 pm in Mumbai in July, it is 6:30 pm in London and 1:30 pm in New York; in January, 5:30 pm and 12:30 pm. For a few weeks around the clock changes (8 to 29 March, and 25 October to 1 November) the UK and US gaps differ from both columns by an hour, so check a world clock in those weeks.

When people from India search on HearMe

This is the one place on the page where we use our own numbers, and we use them carefully. We looked at how many different people in India tapped Start in each hour of the Indian day between 28 September and 2 October 2026. Only four of those days had data, so this is a very small window from a young site, and it will change as more people arrive.

What it showed: searches from India cluster from about 8 pm to 2 am IST. The single busiest hour was midnight to 12:59 am. After that came 1 am, 10 pm and 11 pm, and then 8 pm and 9 pm. The quietest stretch ran from about 2 am to 9 am. We are not printing counts or percentages, because so few days would make them look more precise than they are.

How to read this

A busy hour is a pattern in when people pressed Start. It is not a promise that someone will be free the moment you arrive, and a quiet hour does not mean nobody will turn up. The live online count at the top of the page is the better guide on any given night, and we will revise this note as the pattern settles.

If you are choosing a time, the practical reading is that late evening into the small hours is when the Indian side of the queue is fullest. Mornings and early afternoons are thin from India, but the clock table above shows that the UK and Pakistan are awake then, so the mix of people you meet shifts through the day.

Which language to ask for

The HearMe interface comes in eight languages, and Hindi and English are two of them, so you can switch the buttons and labels to Hindi from settings. That only changes the screen. Matching is not sorted by language, so the person you meet may speak Hindi, Tamil, Bengali or something else.

So do the obvious thing and ask in your first message. "Hindi chalega?" or "English or Hinglish?" takes five seconds and saves the awkward silence. If you want a particular language, the start box on this page has chips for Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi and Bengali. A chip is only an interest tag: it makes the matcher look first for someone who picked the same one, and it will pair you with whoever is waiting once that first look comes up empty.

For languages outside those seven, such as Punjabi, Gujarati or Odia, there is no chip, so say it in your first line. Voice often suits regional languages better than typing does. For English practice, see practise English.

On mobile data and a mid-range Android phone

HearMe runs in the browser, so there is nothing to download and nothing that needs updating. Chrome on a mid-range Android phone is the case we design for, and text chat barely registers against a data pack. A voice call carries audio only, with no video track at all, so it uses a small slice of what a video call would.

If your signal wobbles, voice is the part that suffers first, and the call will try to reconnect for a short while before it ends. When a direct path between two phones is blocked, a relay passes the audio along without keeping it. If the call is bad, tap Next and try again, or switch to text, which survives a weak connection far better.

The voice chat guide for India goes through a call step by step, and late-night chat covers the hours after midnight.

Voice with headphones, and a phone shared at home

Wear earphones for voice. Otherwise your speaker feeds the other person's voice back into your microphone and you both hear an echo. Any wired or Bluetooth set fixes it. Earphones also keep a stranger's voice from filling a hostel room or a shared flat.

The microphone permission is the only one the site asks for, and only when you start a voice chat. If the phone is shared, remember that your nickname lives in that browser, so use a private tab or clear the site data when you hand the phone back.

Late at night: staying safe

Because the busiest hours run past midnight, a lot of conversations happen when people are tired and more open than usual. That is also when it pays to be careful. Keep your name, number, address, college or office and social handles out of the chat, however friendly it feels.

Nobody is asked for a phone number to use HearMe, and the other person never sees one, because there is none to see. If a stranger pushes you to another app, asks for money or sends a link, ignore it. Tap Next to leave, Block to make sure you are not paired with them again, or Report to send it to a person who reads reports.

HearMe is for adults, 18+ only, and every text message goes through a check for abuse and for signs that someone is under 18. Calls are not recorded; a report uploads the last 60 seconds for review, and that clip is deleted after 7 days unless a moderator confirms the report as child safety or under 18; then it is kept as evidence for one year.

What the other person sees about you

A nickname you chose and a country flag, nothing else. The flag is worked out on our server and shows a country, never a city. There is no profile photo, no number, no email and no video. A free account, if you make one, adds friends and direct messages.

Premium buys a gender filter, a country filter, priority in matching and a badge, never the right to take part. If you want to hear from one country only, that filter is a Premium option; the default is everyone, worldwide.

Frequently asked questions

Is HearMe free in India?

Yes. Chatting, sending messages and seeing your recent matches are free, and an account is optional. Premium adds filters, priority in matching and a badge, not the ability to take part.

Can I talk with strangers in India without signing up?

Yes. Choose a nickname, tick 18+ and tap Start. HearMe asks for no phone number, OTP or email, and a free account is optional.

Is it safe to talk with strangers late at night?

Keep personal details out of the chat, and use Next, Block and Report freely. Reports are read by a person, and HearMe is 18+ only.

What time zone does HearMe use for India?

Your own. India has one zone, IST, UTC+5:30, with no daylight saving. The times on this page are worked out from that offset.

What time is it in the UK when it is 9 pm in India?

4:30 pm in the UK while British Summer Time is on, and 3:30 pm on GMT in winter. Pakistan is 8:30 pm, the Philippines 11:30 pm.

When are the busiest hours for India on HearMe?

In our data from 28 September to 2 October 2026, searches from India cluster from about 8 pm to 2 am IST, busiest around midnight. It is four days of data from a new site and will change.

Does a busy hour mean someone will be free to talk?

No. It describes when people tapped Start, not who is free right now. The live online count at the top of the page is the better guide.

Can I chat in Hindi, Hinglish or another Indian language?

Yes, with anyone who shares it. Matching ignores language, so ask in your opening message. The start box has chips for seven Indian languages that act as interest tags.

Does voice chat work on mobile data?

Yes. Voice is audio only, with no video, so it uses a small amount of data. On a weak signal, switch to text or tap Next.

Will the other person see my phone number or my city?

No. They see your nickname and a country flag. HearMe never shows a number, an email or a city, and there is no camera.
